Gene O. Valentine
Gene Orr Valentine, 77, a former resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Colonial Place in Elkins, departed this life Sunday morning, Dec. 29, 2002, at Elkins. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to respiratory failure.
She was born Nov. 8, 1925, at Cumberland, Md., a daughter of the late Arthur Jay Valentine and Eugenia Orr Valentine.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1943 and a graduate of Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1947. She was employed as a laboratory technician at Laboratory, Pa., and St. Petersburg, Fla., as well as for the U.S. Army and the Pittsburgh West Penn. Hospital. She was a lifelong member of the Parsons Presbyterian Church.
Friends will be received at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted at Parsons City Cemetery Thursday at 11 a.m. The Rev. T. Robert Valentine
T. Robert "Bob" Valentine, 53, Elkins City Treasurer, and a resident of 121 Robert E. Lee Ave., Elkins, departed this life at 1:21 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2002, at his home.He had been in declining health for the past year and death was attributed to cancer.
He was born April 11, 1949, at Elkins, a son of the late Thomas Frank "Wimpy" Valentine and Cornelia Levier Valentine.
On June 13, 1970, at the Saint Brendan Catholic Church at Elkins, with the Rev. Father Charles McCallister officiating, he was married to the former Maria Varchetto, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Thomas Robert "T.R." Valentine, Elkins; three daughters, Nikki Valentine, Elkins, Mandy Valentine Belan and husband, Stephen, Elkins, and Erin Valentine, Arlington, Va.; one brother, William Jeffrey "Jeff" Valentine, Elkins; and one granddaughter, Maria Harter.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1967. He received a bachelor of science degree in business, from Davis & Elkins College in 1973. He was employed by the West Virginia Housing Development Fund and in 1996, became the city treasurer for the city of Elkins, a position he held until the time of his death. He had devoted his life to community service. He was past president and was a life member of the Elkins Kiwanis Club, was awarded the Mike J. Miller Kiwanian of the Year award during 1986, was a West Virginia District, Distinguished Lieutenant Governor for Division 4 from 1990 to 1991 and was instrumental in the operation of the Kiwanis Corn Dog Wagon for the past 15 years, which benefits Kiwanis Service Projects. He was president of Habitat for Humanity and along with a small group of dedicated volunteers, had just completed and dedicated the fifth Habitat House in the Elkins area.
He was an assistant director for the Mountain State Forest Festival for the past five years and a member of the Democratic Executive Committee. He was a member of Saint Brendan Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister of the Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
On Thursday at 6 p.m. at Saint Brendan Catholic Church, at Elkins, the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held with the Rev. Father Charles McCallister and the Rev. Father William Anderson as the presiders. Friends will be received following the Liturgy from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church. A graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Saint Brendan Cemetery. Interment will follow. Blanche Elizabeth Ours Vance, 80, of Dorcas, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, at Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Friends will be received at Schaeffer Funeral Home today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at Brake Church of the Brethren, Dorcas, Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Crites Cemetery at Dorcas. From 14 June 2002.

Cornelia J. Vance
Cornelia J. Vance, 77, a resident of Cortland, Ohio, died at 10:17 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio. Death was attributed to kidney failure.
She was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Whitmer, the daughter of Odith White and Effel Kisamore.
On Nov. 3, 1945, she married Carl R. Vance, who preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 1991.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Dannie G. and Cindy Vance, Farmdale, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Diana J. and William Pishotti, Cortland, Ohio; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, Odith White, Elkins; one sister, Wilda Tingler, Whitmer.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Lee, Junior G. and Talbot White.
Mrs. Vance was a homemaker and was a member of North Mar Christian Missionary Alliance Church and enjoyed her involvement in the Prime Timers of the church. She sang in the community Messiah for 17 years and enjoyed gardening, cooking, walking and her grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the North Mar Christian Missionary Alliance Church and on Monday for one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service. Dale H. Vance
Dale Hobert Vance, 86, of Onego, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at his residence in Onego.
Mr. Vance was born Dec. 7, 1915, in Roaring Creek, a son of the late Mason and Bertha Vance.
On June 7, 1950, in Cumberland, Md., he married Elsie L. Hedrick, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Patty Holloway, Franklin, and Nancy Reed, Onego; one son, Sam Vance, Elkins; four sisters, Grace Harper, Warren, Ohio, Eula Bland, Seneca Rocks, and Joy Bowers and Hope Smith, both of Baltimore, Md.; and one grandson, Ryan Vance, Elkins.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester, Marvin and Carl; and two sisters, Dessie Hartman and Jessie Tingler.
Mr. Vance was a timber cutter, and worked for the West Virginia Division of Highways and U.S. Forest Service. He was a member of Onego Church of the Brethren.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Basagic Funeral Home in Petersburg. Funeral services will be at Bible Missionary Church Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Harry Vance
Harry Vance, 84, of Cabins, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at his residence.

Mary A. Vance
Mary Alice Cooper Vance, 71, of Pasadena, Md., and formerly of Onego, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Anne Arundel Hospital, Annapolis, Md.
She was born Jan. 20, 1931, in Harman, a daughter of the late Charles Henry and Floda K. Lantz Cooper.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Onego Church of the Brethren.
On July 7, 1951, she married Marvin Valley Vance, who preceded her in death on May 10, 1985.
Surviving are one daughter, Kitty S. Vance Phares of Pasadena, Md.; one son, Billy Joe Vance of Franklin; two sisters, Phoebe Cooper Lawrence of Alexandria, Va., and Carol J. Cooper Perine of Radcliff, Ky.; one brother, Joe Henry Cooper of Harman; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Friends will be received today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Onego Church of the Brethren with Pastor Charles Twigg officiating. Interment will follow in North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton. From 12 Mar 2002

Reta O. Vance
Reta Olive Howell Vance, 83, of Heritage Park Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Wooster Community Hospital, after a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 11, 1918, in Bowden, a daughter of the late William H. and Delphia Hansford Howell.
On Dec. 18, 1937, she married Charles H. Vance, who survives.
Also surviving are a loving son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Rhonda Vance of Wooster, Ohio; two grandchildren, Chad Vance and wife, Diane, of Dalton, Ohio, and Shannon Batdorf and husband, Doug, of Shreve, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Koleton, Wyatt and Harley; one sister, Dollie Fansler, of Elkins; and many loving family and friends.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Rita Vance; her parents, two brothers, three stepsisters and one stepbrother.
She had made her home in the Dalton area most of her life and was a member of the Pleasant Valley United Brethren Church.
Before she retired, along with her husband, they had managed Williamsburg and Arlington Arms Apartments, both in Wooster from 1980-1989. She had lived at Heritage Park until her death.
There will be no services or calling hours. Her wishes were to be cremated. Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, Wooster, Ohio, is in charge of the arrangements. From 10 May 2002.

Evelyn Vandevander
Evelyn B. Vandevander, 89, of Riverton, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, in Helene Fuld Hospital in Trenton, N.J., following an automobile accident in New Jersey.
Mrs. Vandevander was born Jan. 29, 1912, in Riverton, a daughter of the late Jacob Elmer Lambert and Maggie Hedrick.
She was twice married. First, she married Russell Lantz, who preceded her in death on April 16, 1967. Second, she married Bryan Vandevander, who preceded her in death in 1982.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Phares, Cinnaminson, N.J.; a son, Jerry Wayne Lantz, Petersburg; a brother, Lynn Lambert, Newark, Ohio; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Estyl Lambert, Ivai Lambert and Cam Lambert; and two sisters, Tina Snodgrass and Myrtle Nelson.
Mrs. Vandevander retired in 1980 as the postmaster in Riverton. She was a member of Riverton United Methodist Church.

Judy P. Vandevander
Judy Puffenbarger Vandevander, 50, of Bartow, passed away Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
Ms. Vandevander was born Jan. 6, 1952, in Marlinton and was the daughter of Betty Rexrode Puffenbarger of Bartow, and the late James "Puffy" Puffenbarger.
She was a member of the Durbin Brethren Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are one son, Michael D. and wife, Cindy Vandevander, of Martinsburg; two sisters, Tammy Puffenbarger and fiance, Buster Bennett, of Bartow, and Debbie Maxwell of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

William Vandevender
William "Mackie" Vandevender, 80, of Bartow, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital of a sudden illness.
Mr. Vandevender was born March 17, 1922, at Thornwood, a son of the late Ora and Nelia Mae Tilda Slayton Vandevender.
He was a member and trustee of Thornwood Community Church, a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was retired from Howes Leather Co. and was a farmer.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Brian Edward Vandevender and April Lynn Newbrough; two sisters, Carrie Mae Starks and Bessie Marie Vandevender; and one brother, Berlin Brown Vandevender.

David Van Meter III
David Peerce Van Meter III, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 28, 2002, at the age of 83, known to many of his friends as Dave or "Porky."
He was born at Mitchell Station, Ala., on Aug. 27, 1918, the son of the late Wilson Hopkins and Minnie Susan Smith Van Meter.
In 1927, David, his parents and a sister, Mary Sue Van Meter, who survives, moved to Petersburg, where he had resided until his death.
During World War II, he served with the Army in both the European and Pacific theaters of operation. He served as a Grant County court commissioner and a director of the Potomac Valley Bank. He was a director and twice president of Rockingham Poultry Marketing Co-Op. He was a member and past president of the West Virginia Poultry Association, a director with the Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association, a committee member to both the Baltimore District and National Advisory Board of Farm Credit. He was a former member of Kiwanis and a member of the Petersburg Presbyterian Church. He was actively engaged in farming with broiler chickens and beef cattle.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Martha Chenoweth.
Also surviving are one daughter, Pamela Sue Gobert, Houston, Texas; four sons, Wilson H. "Hoppy" of Petersburg, C. Sterling of Saratoga, Calif., David. P. IV, Petersburg, and Charles A. Van Meter of Boston, Mass.; one sister, Mary Sue Van Meter, Baltimore, Md., and eight grandchildren.
The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Petersburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bruce A. Macbeth officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. Memorial donations may be made to Petersburg Presbyterian Church, Moomau’s Public Library or West Virginia Poultry Association. From 30 Apr 2002.

Mary Elizabeth Plauger VanMeter, 88, of Petersburg, died Monday, March 18, in Grant County Nursing Home, where she had resided since Aug. 8, 2000.

Annie L. Varner, 83, of Marlinton, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Varner was born April 23, 1919, in Tucker County, a daughter of the late Clinton and Callie J. Rexrode.
She married Mack Hardy Varner, who preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1998.
Mrs. Varner was a homemaker.

Carl David Varner Sr., 63, of Dry Fork, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at his residence.
He was born April 30, 1939, in Dry Fork, a son of the late Johnnie Wesley and Goldie Marie Burns Varner.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Carol Harper Varner; one son, Carl David Varner Jr. and wife, Dana, of Harman; four daughters, Penny A. Carr of Beverly, Mrs. Rhonda J. (and husband, Gary) Smith of Harrisonburg, Va., Mrs. Cynthia J. (and husband, James) Pratt of Linerville, Va., and Mrs. Denise M. (and husband, Jimmy) Cooper of Harrisonburg, Va.; one brother, Joseph Varner of Dry Fork; five sisters, Kathryn Teter of Dry Fork, Annalea Lawrence of Hambleton, Juanita Mallow of Dry Fork, Jennie Teter of Pierpont, Ohio, and Grace Wolford of Dry Fork; 12 grandchildren, Christopher W. Mr. Varner was a retired truck driver and carpenter. He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Elkins and FOE No. 936 of Davis.
Friends will be received at the Riverside Mennonite Church in Dry Fork Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Riverside Mennonite Church Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Mininger officiating. Interment will follow at the Roy Varner Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountain Hospice of Elkins. Rose E. Vest
Rose Ettie Vest, 92, of Brunswick, Ohio, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Willowwood Care Center in Brunswick, Ohio.
Mrs. Vest was born April 25, 1909, in Valley Bend, a daughter of the late James and Polly Weagman Bowen.
She was twice married. First, she married Casper Cutright, who preceded her in death. Second, she married Kernel Vest, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are three sisters, Viola Rudd, Cleveland, Ohio, Jean Scott, North Royalton, Ohio, and Opal Pringle, Minford, Ohio; two brothers, Jimmy Bowen, Brunswick, Ohio, and Robert Bowen, Cleveland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.
Mrs. Vest was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.

Edna K. Vogel
Edna Katherine Vogel, 84, of Buckhannon Manor, Buckhannon, died Feb. 21, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Vogel was born in Buckhannon, May 2, 1917, a daughter of the late Amos and Edna Mae Fitzgerald.
She was married to Max Lewis Vogel, who preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1976.
Surviving are one son, James L. Vogel and Lila M. See, Buckhannon; one brother, Amos Fitzgerald, Lima, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews, two of whom are Bonnie Morrison and Betty K. Blanchfield.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
Mrs. Vogel was a Methodist by faith.
Funeral services were held Feb. 25 in Clarksburg. Interment was in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery. From 8 Mar 2002
