Alice L. Meade
Alice L. Meade, 70, of Cass, passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Allegheny Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale Friday at 1 p.m. Interment will be at a later date at Hise Cemetery at Hightown, Va. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hise Cemetery. From 17 Dec 2002.

Thomas E. Meece
Thomas E. Meece, 71, a resident of 157 Robert E. Lee Ave., Elkins, passed away Monday evening, Dec. 2, 2002, in Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital in Clarksburg. His death was attributed to cancer.
He was born Feb. 6, 1931, at Cruso, N.C., a son of the late Walter and Laura Jane Kirkendahl Meece.
On May 4, 1963, he was married to Barbara Phillips Meece, who survives in Elkins.
Also surviving are one son, Thomas E. Meece Jr. and wife, Adene, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; three daughters, Mrs. Daryl (Jean) Tapley, Wilson Mills, N.C., Amy Meece and fiance, Juan Fernandez, of New York, N.Y., and Mikheal "Kim" Meece and special daughter, Rebecca McTall, both of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one sister, Mrs. Ray (Virginia) Kinney, Somerset, Ky.; and five grandchildren, Scott Meece, Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Kristopher Tapley, Winston-Salem, N.C., and triplets, Noah, Olivia and Connor Meece, all of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Also preceding him in death were three brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Meece was a graduate of Wilson Mills High School and attended North Carolina State University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and retired from Corley Manufacturing Company in Chattanooga, Tenn. After moving to Elkins, he built several sawmills in Randolph and surrounding counties and was later employed by J.C. Lumber of Elkins.
Mr. Meece donated his body to the Human Gift Registry. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Because Mr. Meece was an Eagle Scout and a Boy Scout Troop Leader, memorial contributions may be made to a local Boy Scout Troop or to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Meece. Richard L. Mentzer
Richard Lewis Mentzer, 91, of 113 S. Main St., Philippi, in the house he had purchased in 1949, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at his home.
He was born Dec. 15, 1910, in Catasauqua, Pa., a son of the late Robert Clewell, who later married Dr. Clayton Mentzer, who adopted Richard Lewis and his brother, Robert.
The love of his life for more than 50 years, Sylvia Katherine Wilson Mentzer, died Aug. 25, 1987.
Surviving are one daughter, Joyce Louise Kerr Borchert and husband, Lee, of Weston; three sons, Richard Lewis Mentzer of Baton Route, La., Lawrence Bruce Mentzer and wife, Hele’n, of Dallas, Texas, and Jahn Harmon Mentzer and wife, Vicki, of Ingram Pa.; eight grandchildren, Richard Lewis Mentzer III and wife, Charlene, of Baton Rouge, La., Danielle Marie Mentzer of Hollywood, Calif., William Yates Kerr and wife, Pam, of Point of Rocks, Md., Charles Lewis Kerr and fiance, Trisha, of Carrollton, Texas, Jennifer Elizabeth McConaughy and husband, Todd, of Plano, Texas, Christopher Isaac Mentzer of Richardson, Texas, Emily Virginia Mentzer of Ingram, Pa., and Andrew Rutherford Mentzer of Ingram, Pa.; and six great-grandchildren, Jordan Lewis Mentzer, Megan Marie Mentzer and Michael James Mentzer, all of Baton Rouge La., Nathaniel Yates Kerr, Mason Garrett Kerr and Gabrielle Alicia Kerr, all of Point-of-Rocks, Md.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lewis Mentzer.
He was a petroleum engineer, first for United Natural Gas Co. in Pennsylvania. He then worked in Venezuela until 1961 for Creole Petroleum Corp., first as a petroleum engineer and eventually as supervisor of a whole camp and oil field operations, with responsibility over several hundred employees and their families.
Upon retirement from Creole, he moved back to Philippi, where he kept himself busy from the 1960s through the 1980s as an engineer for the West Virginia State Road Commission, helped lay new water and sewage lines in Philippi, worked on additions to the old Alderson-Broaddus Hospital, helped plan the second bridge in Philippi and assisted in the planning of the new buildings located where the old Philippi High School was located. He also was a shareholder of the old Barbour Department Store and a shareholder and employee of Davis Drug Store.
He was a member of Philippi Crim Memorial Methodist Church in Philippi. He enjoyed his work with Kiwanis Club and as a member of the Barbour County Planning Commission. He was a petroleum engineer with a degree from West Virginia University.
Friends will be received at Crim Memorial United Methodist Church Thursday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m., the service hour, with the Rev. Alicia Rapking officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Foundation, American Cancer Society or to Mt. Hospice. From 22 Oct 2002.

Marcus J. Metzgar
Marcus J. Metzgar, 80, of Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon, and formerly of Crawford, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Buckhannon.
He was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Mt. Clare, a son of the late Homer D. Metzgar Sr. and Opal Crawford Metzgar.
On July 8, 1944, he married Merle Powers Metzgar, who preceded him in death on Oct. 23, 1985.
Surviving are one son, Joseph Mark Metzgar of Crawford; one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Pamela) Turner of Jane Lew; one sister, Mrs. Ray (VeraLee) Hedrick, Riverdale, Md.; one brother, Roy Metzgar of Frenchburg, Ky.; five grandchildren, Mrs. Gary (Janice) Collins, Roanoke, William J. Metzgar and Jennifer A. Metzgar, both of Crawford, Jamie A. Turner and Chad Turner, both of Jane Lew; one great-grandchild, Presley Turner, Jane Lew; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Mindy Collins, Roanoke.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Teresa Dawn Turner; one brother, Homer Metzgar Jr.; and one sister, MaryLee Hedrick.
He attended Straight Fork United Methodist Church. He retired from Ralph Harper Lumber Co.
Friends will be received at Alkire Funeral Chapel today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charlene Hamrick officiating. Interment will follow in Wimer Cemetery at Straight Fork. From 23 Aug 2002.

Betty J. Meyer
Betty Jean Bartlett Meyer, 72, of Eatonton, Ga., and formerly of Elkins, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Austell House Care Center in Austell, Ga.
She was born July 8, 1930, at Beverly, a daughter of the late Troy and Luceba Hart Bartlett.
She was married to Peter M. Meyer, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two brothers, Browne Bartlett and wife, Norma, St. Albans, and Delmar Bartlett, Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Maude "Sue" Verra and husband, Michael, Vero Beach, Fla.; eight nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Rebecca Pearl Nevel.
She was a 1950 graduate of Elkins High School. She enjoyed camping and traveling. She retired from Maryland National Bank.
She was a member of Manley Memorial Baptist Church in Eatonton, Ga., where she sang in the church choir.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at Manley Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Harry Michael officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manley Memorial Baptist Church building fund. From 2 Aug 2002.

Pearle D. Michael
Pearle D. Moats Michael, a resident of Stow, Ohio, and a former resident of Philippi, passed away Saturday morning, Aug. 17, 2002, in Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio.
She was born in Barbour County, a daughter of the late George and Bly Moats Hotsinpiller.
She was twice married, first to Earl Moats, who preceded her in death. She was united in marriage on Dec. 24, 1971, to John Michael, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Serrin and husband, Greg Wolfe, Akron, Ohio; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Stephan and wife, Mendy Moats, Route 1, Moatsville, and Earl Edward "Chuck" Moats II, Philippi; one sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Bill Freeman, Willis, Texas; four grandson, Stephan Moats II, Dillon Moats, Ty Moats and Trey Moats; one grandpuppy, Sparkles; three nieces, Terry and husband, Daniel Olds, Kelli and husband, Randall Vanscoy and Whitni and husband, Jim Kines; three great-nieces, Tasha and Kendyl Olds and Shannon Vanscoy; one great-nephew, Parker Kines; and two aunts, Eva "Cud" Bennett and Mildred Weaver.
She was a top-selling realtor for 2100 Realty in Akron, Ohio. She was a United Methodist by faith.

Walnut St., Philippi, after 3 p.m. today and until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, at which time she will be moved to the Fairview Church to lie in state from 1 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., the service hour. The Rev. Carl V. Miller
Carl V. Miller, 74, of Graham-Fording Road, Neshannock Township, New Castle, Pa., died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at his home.
He was an iron worker at LTV Steel in Warren, Ohio, for 35 years.
Services were conducted May 3 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at New Castle, with Karl Lugens officiating. Arrangements were by Noga Funeral Home in New Castle. From 14 May 2002.

Hartzel C. Miller
Hartzel C. Miller, 80, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at his home under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice.
He was born March 7, 1922, in Tallmansville, a son of the late Squire E. and Gertie Kelley Miller.
He married Rosetta Dean Miller, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Janis) Smith, Baltimore, Md.; one granddaughter, Heather Smith, Baltimore, Md.; one stepdaughter, Marissa Junkins, South Carolina; one stepgranddaughter, Jennie Casada, South Carolina; two stepgrandsons, Jason Casada, Pennsylvania, and Jeremy Junkins, South Carolina; one brother, Lawrence Miller, Warren, Ohio; three sisters, Evangeline Zickefoose, Mildred Zickefoose, both of Elyria, Ohio, and Maudline Barnett, Zephyrhills, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mae Miller; and one brother, Lenord Miller.
He retired after 20 years as a school teacher for Tri County Vocational School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and received the American Theater Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal and most recently he received a Jubilee of Liberty medal awarded by the French Authorities to American Veterans of World War II who liberated France. He was a member of the VFW Post 3663 of Buckhannon and attended First Presbyterian Church of Buckhannon. His hobby was fishing.
Friends will be received at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kathleen G. Miller
Kathleen Gardner Miller, 83, of Bellafontaine, Ohio, and formerly of Elyria, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at the Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine following a brief illness.
Mrs. Miller was born May 26, 1919, in Elkins. She was an Elyria resident for 40 years before moving to Gallatin, Tenn., where she lived for six years and in 1991 she moved to Bellefontaine.
She was a beautician and was employed by Higbee’s at the former Midway Mall in Elyria in the late 1960s and eventually she worked out of her home.
She was also a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bellefontaine and was a former member of the Abbe Road Baptist Church and the Elyria Baptist Church, both in Elyria.
Survivors include her daughters, Connie McVetta of Oberlin, Peggy and husband, Mike Norvile, of Lewistown, Ohio; her son, Gary, of Scappoose, Ore., five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret "Marie" Hinchman, Elkins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey G. Miller, in 1976; sons Jackie and David; and brothers Gene Gardner, Eddie Gardner and Warren Gardner.
Friends may call Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11:30 a.m. at the Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home at Chestnut Ridge Road and state Route 57 in Elyria. The Rev. Jeffory D. Willetts, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Bellefontaine, will officiate. Burial will follow in Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria.

Kathleen Mae Miller, 66, a former resident of the Jimtown community, and a resident of Norton, passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at noon, at the home of her daughter, Feronda and son-in-law, Chad Bennett, where she made her home for the past several years.
She was born March 5, 1936, in Valley Bend, a daughter of the late Richard and Flora Irene Wyatt Bender.
On Dec. 24, 1952, she was united in marriage to Leo H. Miller, who preceded her in death on Sept. 13, 1983.
She is survived by four daughters, Patricia K. Miller of Norton, Vickie L. Gibson of Lynchburg, Va., Feronda Bennett and husband, Chad, of Norton, and Sherry Owens of Clarksburg; three sons, Gary Miller and wife, Patty, of Elkins, David Miller and wife, Veronica, of Shelbyville, Mich., and Donnie Miller and wife, Pam, of Elkins; two sisters, Anna Mae Shoulders and husband, Buck, of Elkins, and Pauline N. Hagerty of Norton; and four brothers, Paul Bender of Elkins, Roger Bender of Elkins, Eugene Bender of Montrose, and Barry Bender of California.
Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She worked in the cafeteria at the Memorial General Hospital until becoming disabled and retired in 1985. She loved to make crafts, play bingo and travel. She attended Landmark Baptist Church and was a Methodist by faith.
Preceding her in death besides her parents are one son, Ralph Leo Miller; three brothers, James Bender, Kenneth Bender and Robert Bender; and one great-grandchild, Joseph Green.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home today after 6 p.m. On Tuesday, Mrs. Miller will be moved to Phillips Chapel Church, where friends may call from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Mark Houser of Landmark Baptist Church will officiate and interment will follow in Phillips Chapel Church in Jimtown. The F.E. She was born April 29, 1930, in Bayard, a daughter of the late Michael and Agnes DelSignore.
She is survived by two sisters, Mary Watkins of Bayard, and Elizabeth Edgar of Accident, Md.; and two nephews, Homer and Dallas Flesher of Aurora.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Miller; one sister and three brothers.
Mrs. Miller was a homemaker.

Mary S. Mills
Mary S. Mills, 39, of Arlington Addition, Clarksburg, died Monday morning, March 25, 2002, following an extended illnss.
She was born May 6, 1962, in Buckhannon, the seventh of 13 children of Velma Cowger Jordan, who survives in Hacker Valley, and the late Gerald Curt Bender.
On April 10, 1982, she married Jeffrey R. Mills, who survives.
Also surviving are five brothers, Herb Bender, Elkins, Ed, Ernie, Marvin and Andy Bender, all of Richmond, Va.; six sisters, Linda Mayle, Clarksburg, Connie Justice, Charleston, Sue Pugh, French Creek, Joan Williams, Hacker Valley, Renetta Crow, Richmond, Va., and Dee Harvey, Silver Spring, Md.; her stepfather, Edward "Jink" Jodan, Hacker Valley; her maternal grandmother, Effie Cowgar, Clarksburg; her mother- and father-in-law, Maxine and Charles M. Mills, Arlington Addition, Clarksburg; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, David Bender.
She was a certified nursing assistant and medical assistant, having worked at Meadowview and Lida Clark nursing homes. She attended the Church of God, Liberty Addition, and very much enjoyed reading.

Edna F. Mitchell
Edna F. Mitchell, 89, a resident of Route 3, Philippi, passed away at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in Broaddus Hospital.
She was born Feb. 24, 1913, at Arden, the daughter of the late Elihue and Trona Cross Mitchell.
She was united in marriage on April 15, 1933, to Edison "Lud" Mitchell, who preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1993.
Surviving are five sisters, Opal Burger, Houston, Texas, Haley Wright, Ohio, Rita Kennedy, Grafton, Lela Reed and Violet Mouser, both of Philippi; and one brother, James Mitchell, Shinnston.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Keller and Thelma Keller; and two brothers, Wilburn Mitchell and Carl Mitchell.
Mrs. Mitchell was a homemaker and a member of the Clemtown United Methodist Church.

Nela P. Mitchell
Nela Pearl Mitchell, 83, of Pleasant Creek, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown following an extended illness.
Mrs. Mitchell was born May 30, 1918, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late John Fielden Hathaway and Hattie Beth Shaffer Hathaway.
On Sept. 19, 1935, she married William E. "Wood" Mitchell, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Veta Louise Howdyshell and husband, Robert, Webster, and Etha Lucille Adams and husband, Ray, St. George; two sons, Willard Mitchell, Pleasant Creek, and Elwood J. "Jack" Mitchell, Grafton; a sister, Hattie Keller, Philippi; 12 grandchildren, an adopted grandson, 20 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Mitchell was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Creek United Methodist Church.

Ellen Marie Moats, 79, of Route 1, Moatsville, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 31, 2002, in Broaddus Hospital Long Term Care Facility following an extended illness.
Mrs. Moats was born Nov. 14, 1922, in Moatsville, a daughter of the late Otis and Mamie Freeman Nestor.
On Dec. 7, 1942, she married Willis Henry Moats, who survives at Route 1, Moatsville.
Also surviving are a daughter, Joyce Keene and husband, Michael, Moatsville; two sons, Donald Lee Moats and wife, Pauline, Philippi, Gene Moats and wife, Carolyn, Moatsville; a brother, Hubert Nestor, Moatsville; two sisters, Treva Tenney, Philippi, and Dollie Vincent, Fairmont; three grandchildren, Charles Lee Moats and Brian Lee Moats, both of Philippi, and Becky Hentschel, Charleston; three great-granddaughters, Amber Moats, Johnna Moats and Tia Moats; and a great-grandson, Nikki Moats.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Bernice Nestor, Lena Green, Linda M. Resch and an infant, Dorothy Nestor; and a brother, Delbert Nestor.
Mrs. Moats was a homemaker. She, along with her husband, operated Moatsville Market for more than 25 years.

Cornella Moler
Cornella "Connie" Moler, 79, of Bel Air, Md., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Moler was born in Elkins, a daughter of the late Wayne Jay and Hattie Morgan Sharp Wolverton.
She married Calvin G. Moler, who survives. They had been married for 58 years.

George Edward Mollohan, 65, of 66 Point Drive, Petersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Mollohan was born Feb. 3, 1936, in Gassaway, a son of the late Lanty and Mamie Shock Mollohan.
He was twice married. First, he married Glema Douglas Mollohan, who preceded him in death in 1989. Second, he married Mary Ann Smith Mollohan, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Mark Edward Mollohan, Millersville, Md.; a sister, Adah Stump, Charlottesville, Va.; a brother, James Mollohan, Springhill, Ohio; and a grandson, George Edward Mollohan.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl Mollohan, Howard Mollohan, William Mollohan and Stanley Mollohan; and a sister, Ruth Mollohan Madison.
Mr. Mollohan was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 26, Washington, D.C. He retired in 1996 after 38 years of service with Truland Services, Arlington, Va.
He and his wife moved to Petersburg in January 2001, from Prince Frederick, Md. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

She was a 1984 graduate of the Romney School for the Deaf.

Oscar D. Montoney
Oscar Doane Montoney, 87, a resident of the Hazelwood Community since moving from Virginia in 1932, departed this life at 4:42 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health for the past two weeks.
He was born Sept. 1, 1914, at Job, a son of the late Jacob Montoney and Ella Mae Lambert Montoney. He was a direct descendand of Dr. Johannes De La Montague of France and Holland and Rachel Deforest, who were early settlers of New York.
On May 27, 1942, at Philippi, he was married to the former Hattie Marie Weese Fansler, who preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 1990.
Surviving are two daughters, Ella Ruth Montoney, Hazelwood, Donna Weese and husband, Kenny, Beverly; one stepson, Walter W. Fansler Jr. and wife, Juanita, Bridgewater, Va.; two grandchildren, Douglas Kent Weese and wife, Rhea, Beverly, and Amie Marie Weese, Beverly; one stepgrandson, W. Wilton Fansler III and wife, Rebecca, Bridgewater, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Michael and Nathan James Weese; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest Kirk Montoney; and one sister, Ruth Montoney Bonner.
He was a graduate of Mt. Clinton High School at Mt. Clinton, Va., with the class of 1931, attended Bridgewater College at Bridgewater, Va., and Mountain State Business College at Parkersburg.
Mr. Montoney enlisted in the West Virginia Army National Guard, Company G, 201st Infantry on Jan. 9, 1937, which was then called to active duty in the United States Army on Jan. 6, 1941. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Infantry, serving as a first lieutenant, with the 664th Ordinance Ammunition Company during World War II in Ardennes and Rhineland and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge for meritorious achievement in France on Nov. 26, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action at Luxenburg on Dec. 24, 1944. He was awarded the Grand Cross of Homage and Life Membership in the Military Order of the Ardennes. On Veterans Day, 2001, at the State Capitol at Charleston, Mr. Montoney was awarded the thank-You-America Certificate and the Jubilee of Liberty Medal for his help in liberating France, by a representative of the French Government and Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito.
He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service on Sept. 1, 1976, with 30 years of service as a mail carrier in the city of Elkins. He was a life member of the H.W. Daniel’s Post 29, American Legion, a life member of the Tygarts Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 1. He was a member of the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center, the Elkins Lodge 1135, BPOE and was a member of the Cook’s Creek Presbyterian Church at Mount Clinton, Va.

Kathryn Irene "Cap" Moore, 36, a former resident of Elkins and a resident of Huntsburg, Ohio, for the past several years, passed away Saturday morning, Nov. 30, 2002, near Huntsburg from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two daughters, Texie Belle Leary, Beverly, and Mariah Janine Moore, Chardon, Ohio; two sons, Benjamin Hinchman, Beverly, and Paul Allen Moore, Chardon, Ohio; four sisters, Penney Moore and husband, Marshall, Middlefield, Ohio, Twylla Paugh, Oakland, Md., Shelly Tasker, Cumberland, Md., and Rhonda Rix, Westminster, Md.; two brothers, Michael Ware and wife, Kathy, Beverly, and Keith Ware and wife, Sarah, Sandyville; and four stepbrothers, Jerry, Bobby, John and David Leary. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was one brother, Eddie Ware.
She was a line operator for the Kinetico Water Treatment Plant in Newberry, Ohio, for the past year. She loved camping and the outdoors.
Cap was a pleasant person and never met a stranger, and will be sadly missed by her children, family and friends.

Wanda Lee Shreve Moran, 67, of Route 4, Elkins, died at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health for the past two years and death was attributed to complications of leukemia.
Mrs. Moran was born Nov. 6, 1934, in Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Clifford Shreve and Viola Arbogast Shreve.
She married Monzel V. Moran, who preceded her in death in 1971.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Sponaugle and husband, Bob, Elkins, Crystal Kimbleton and husband, Jeremy, Alpena, and Wilma "Sissy" Stough, York, Pa.; four brothers, David Shreve, York, Pa., Strader Shreve, Hedgesville, Franklin "Pete" Shreve, Elkins, and Roger Collins, Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Margaret Webster, York, Pa., Shirley Lohr, Baltimore, Md., and Betty Nelson, York, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Megan and Chris Sponaugle, Alexandria Kimbleton, James, Carrie, Anna and Jennifer Stough; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Teirfelter, Dorothy Mae Shreve; and an infant grandson.
Mrs. Moran attended the one- room school at Shaver's Run. She worked for the former Whiteway Produce and was a Protestant.

Benny Lane Moreland, 53, of 1039 Downtown Road, Baltimore, Md., died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Moreland was born June 24, 1948, in Buckhannon, a son of Melva Jacquelin Hinkle Moreland, who survives in Buckhannon, and the late Arthur Bennett Moreland.
Also surviving are a daughter, Jody Moreland, Laurel, Md.; a brother, Duane Moreland, Buckhannon; a sister, Debi Harper, Buckhannon; his fiancee, Carol Comer, Baltimore, Md.; his stepmother, Rosemary Moreland, Buckhannon; and two nephews.
Mr. Moreland was a master auto technician for Len Stoler Ford Dealer. He served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War.

Elizabeth D. Morgan
Elizabeth Dailey Morgan, 78, of French Creek, the Evergreen Alton Road, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born Nov. 12, 1923, in Buckhannon, the eldest daughter of the late Judge A. Jerome and Leda A. Burr Dailey.
In 1950, she married H. Hayden Morgan, who survives.
Also surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Barbara E. Morgan, New York City, N.Y., Amy L. Morgan, North Huntingdon, Pa., and Megan A. Morgan, Adrian; one grandchild, Joseph M. Schiff, Adrian; and one sister, Martha Jane Dailey, San Luis Obispo, Calif.
She taught at Easton Maryland High School and Miss Ellis’ School for Girls in Pittsburgh. She received her bachelor of arts degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College and completed her master’s degree studies in English Literature and history at Columbia University.

Carl R. Morris
Carl Ralph Morris, 83, of Grantsville, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg.
A lifelong resident of Calhoun County, he was born in Grantsville, on Nov. 18, 1918, a son of the late L.J. and Edith Marshall Morris.
He served two separate terms in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served one term as sheriff of Calhoun County. He was a graduate of West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in geology and a minor in math.
He was going into his 55th year as an entrepreneur focusing mainly on oil and gas drilling and production, real estate and publishing.
He was still active every day as publisher of the Calhoun Chronicle and president of Calhoun Properties. He was an active member of the Calhoun County Historical Society, the First Baptist Church of Grantsville, the "Geritol Gang," the WVU Emeritus Club and the West Virginia Press Association. He served on the boards of the Mollohan Foundation and the Glenville State College Foundation.
He was the founding member of the Independent Oil and Gas Association and on the Examiner’s Board for the West Virginia Oil and Gas Inspectors since 1964.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Helen Rampp Morris; seven children, Carleen Dixon of Washington, D.C., Barbara (and Jim) Full of Parkersburg, Joe (and Sandy) Morris of Seneca, Pa., Bob (and Jenny) Morris of South Charleston, Bill (and Kendi) Morris of Gallipolis, Ohio, Jim (and Lynn Gilbert) Morris of Grantsville, and Sarah (and Todd) Rhodes of Hickory, N.C.; 14 grandchildren, Matthew Dixon, Stan and Geoff Whitaker, Lucas, Drue and Aren Morris, Steven, Katie and Susanna Morris, Will and Rachel Morris, Michelle, Emily and Rebecca Rhodes.
Preceding him in death were his first wife, Myrtha McCartney Morris in 1951; his brother, Donald W. Morris; and his sister, Bernice Morris Stamp.

He was born March 22, 1921, in Troup, Texas, a son of the late Gregg and Christine Melton Morris.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Shaw Mullens Morris of Prairieville, La.; one daughter, Linda Jacobus of Midland, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Chevelle Morris of Montgomery, Texas; three stepsons and their spouses, Wayne and Lynne Mullens of Gonzales, La., Jake and Sherry Mullens of Clearwater, Fla., and Brad and Ginny Mullens of North Bay, Ontario; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Morris was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a Baptist by faith.

John L. Morrison, 81, of Adrian, died Monday, March 25, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Mr. Morrison was born Sept. 8, 1920, in Harrison County, a son of Irene Powell Morrison Marshall, who survives in Jane Lew, and the late Howard Morrison.
He married Josephine Gillis Morrison, who survives.

Mr. Morrison was a kitchen supervisor for Veterans Administration. He served in the Army during World War II and survived the Pearl Harbor attack. He was a member of French Creek Chapter 36 DAV, Buckhannon VFW Post 3663 and Frank B. Bartlett Post 7, American Legion. He was past president and member of Tennerton Lions Club.

Marion Ruth Morrison, 82, a resident of the Scott’s Lake Road, Beverly, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at her home following an extended illness.
She was born July 3, 1920, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Luther and Simella Canfield Myers.
On Feb. 26, 1942, she was married to Noel Morrison, who survives at Scott’s Lake.
Also surviving are one son, Roy Dale Morrison and wife, Carolyn Jean, of Elkins; two daughters, Jean Ann Bush and husband, Charlie, of Lancaster, Ohio, and Joy Skinner and husband, Ken, of Clarksburg; one brother, Max Myers, Charleston, S.C.; three sisters, Opal Phillips and Doris Barrett, both of Elkins, and Mildred Ross of Plant City, Fla.; six grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Morrison was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1940 and was a homemaker. She was a loving wife and mother and a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and the Women’s Society of Christian Service of the church.

Mary L. Morrison, 88, of 125 S. Eighth St., Hennepin, Ill., and formerly of Buckhannon, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, in Heartland Healthcare Center in Henry, Ill.
Mrs. Morrison was born March 1, 1914, in Gaines, a daughter of the late William and Emma Kelley Young.
In 1932, she married John C. Morrison, who preceded her in death in 1977.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Litherland and husband, Eugene, Hennepin, Ill., Rosemary Olson and husband, Wayne, Indianapolis, Ind., and Dorothy Webster and husband, Nevin, Lincoln Park, Wis.; nine grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Harry Young, Marvin Young,
Orville Young, Roy Young and Sidney Young; and one sister, Icie Young.
Mrs. Morrison was a homemaker. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Gaines. She was an associate member of First United Methodist Church in Buckhannon and an associate member of Hennepin United Methodist Church in Hennepin, Ill.
She was a member of Chapter 81 of OES of Rock Cave Eastern Star, Temple No. 134 Pythian Sister of Buckhannon.

He was married to Mary P. Morrison, who survives in Elkins.

Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Gael O’Hare, Elsie White and Vivian Elaine Morrison.
Mr. Morrison was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was the owner and operator of Mac’s Radio and Television Repair Service in Elkins for many years, prior to his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Friends were received from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jeff Falter officiating. Interment followed in the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery, where the presentation of the American flag was made by members of the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins was in charge of the arrangements for McLake Thurston "Mac" Morrison. From 11 Nov 2002.

Roxie G. Morrison
Roxie G. Morrison, 68, of Fairmont, formerly of Marlinton, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in Fairmont General Hospital.
She was a homemaker, a member of the Eastern Star and was of the Methodist faith.
She was born at Green Bank on Sept. 16, 1934, a daughter of the late Glen and Ruth Hudson Galford.
Surviving are her three sons, Douglas G. Morrison of Gaines, Pa., Tom D. Morrison of San Jose, Calif., and Frank M. Morrison of Marlinton; two brothers, Harper Galford of Green Bank, and Marvin Galford of South Charleston; one sister, Betty Galford Kennison of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
The Rev. David Rittenhouse will hold funeral services Saturday at 3 p.m. at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  From 24 Dec 2002.

Harry L. Moyer Sr., 82, of the Chenoweth Creek community, died at 6:40 a.m. today, Jan. 10, 2002, at his residence.

John M. Mouser
John Mark Mouser, 46, of Columbia, Mo., formerly of Philippi, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in Boon Hospital Center, Columbia, Mo, following a brief illness.
He was born March 30, 1956, at Philippi, a son of the late William Harold and Bessie Marie Nestor Mouser.
Survivors include two sons, John Curtis Mouser and Paul David Mouser, both of Buckhannon; two sisters, Lola Spotloe and Erma Mouser, both of Elkins; two brothers, Jackie Lee Mouser and Steven Ray Mouser, both of Philippi; five nieces and nephews, Holley Mouser, Regina Edwards, Greg Mouser, Bailey Morris and Steven Harold Mouser; several grandnieces and nephews; and three special friends, George Shobe, Joyce Logan and Dorothy Brown, all of Columbia, Mo.
Mr. Mouser was a graduate of Philip Barbour High School. He was a former employee of the A&P supermarkets in Philippi and Parsons. He was a carpenter and residential painter and had been involved in the restoration of the Historic Philippi Covered Bridge.
Honoring the wishes of the deceased, his remains were cremated. Committal of the ashes will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the Marsh Section of the Cross Roads Cemetery at Tacy with the Rev. Jerry Boyce officiating. From 10 July 2002.

Harry L. Moyer Sr.
Harry L. Moyer Sr., 82, of the Chenoweth Creek community, died at 6:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at his residence. He had been in failing health for the past two years.
Mr. Moyer was born April 17, 1919, in Elkins, a son of the late John Clinton and Eva A. Wolfe Moyer.
On Aug. 5, 1944, he married the former Ulta Virginia Chenoweth, who preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 2000.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Jack (Barbara) Wallace, Chenoweth Creek; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harry L. Moyer Jr. and wife, Priscilla, Chenoweth Creek, and Lewis N. Moyer and wife, Sharon, Ronceverte; two sisters, Mable Luther, Farmville, Va., and Annabelle Browning, Olivet, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, seven brothers and a great-grandson.
Mr. Moyer was a carman for Western Maryland Railroad and had been promoted to supervisor before retiring in 1984. He was a farmer and gardener. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of Hart's Chapel Church and a Protestant by faith.

: Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Saturday after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Lowther of Elkins, and Preacher Ron Nestor of the Believer's Fellowship in Elkins officiating. Interment will follow in Chenoweth Cemetery in Chenoweth Creek. Donovan P. Murphy
Donovan P. Murphy, 63, a resident of 105 Byrer St., Philippi, passed away Wedneaday, Oct. 30, in Preston Memorial Hospital in Kingwood.
He was born Sept. 7, 1939, at Arden, the son of the late Fax B. Murphy and M. Ruth Cross Murphy of 105 Byrer St., Philippi.
Also surviving are four aunts, one being Audra C. Murphy of Philippi; and several cousins, one being Stanis F. Martin of Rivesville.
He was preceded in death by one aunt, Evelyn J. Cross.
Mr. Murphy attended Alderson-Broaddus College. He was formerly employed as an X-ray technician at the West Virginia University Medical Center in Morgantown.
He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. From 31 Oct 2002.

Frazer W. Murphy
Frazer William Murphy, 78, of HC 78, Box 17, Riverton, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Murphy was born May 22, 1923, in Cherry Grove, a son of the late Isaac Earl Murphy and Sylvia Virginia Bennett.
He married Bonnie Judy Murphy, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Juanita Goldizen, Maysville, and Lenora Mallow, Upper Tract; one son, Dale Murphy, Franklin; two sisters, Lora Smith and Helen Johnson, both of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Herman Murphy, Cherry Grove; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Dana Murphy; one half brother, Hessie Hornick; one sister, Zetha Vandevander; and one half sister, Bonnie Wymer.
Mr. Murphy was a farmer and retired in 1986 after 22 1/2 years as a custodian at Circleville High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a member of Spruce Knob Ruritan Club with 23 years perfect attendance. He was a member of VFW Post 6862 Riverton. He attended Circleville Presbyterian Church.
Friends will be received at Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in Circleville Presbyterian Church Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. C. William Cox officiating. Interment will follow in North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton. From 1 Mar 2002.

Kathleen P. Murphy
Kathleen Phares Murphy, 85, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Huttonsville and Elkins, died on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in Timberridge Rehabilitation Center in Ocala.
Mrs. Murphy was born in Cass, a daughter of the late Frank and Mittie Gear Phares.
On Oct. 23, 1937, she married Russell D. Murphy, who preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1995.
She was raised in Huttonsville and resided in Elkins for most of her life.
Surviving are a son, Gary, of Ocala, Fla.; two daughters, Sondra Jones and Sharon Mahan, both of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Josephine Phares Murphy and husband, Roscoe "Rock" Murphy, Ocala, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Cathy Shipman, Riverview, Fla., Scott Murphy, Warrenton, Va., Rebecca Bennett, Tucker, Ga., Matthew Murphy, Covington, Ga., Mark Murphy, Ocala, Fla., Jennifer Murphy, Grand Cayman Island, and Kailey Murphy, Saugatuck, Mich.; and five great-grandchildren, Tessa Murphy, Warrenton, Va., Dustin and Brock Bennett, Tucker, Ga., Mitch and Jason Shipman, Riverview, Fla.
She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Seth, died in infancy in 1984.
Mrs. Murphy was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins and more recently, a member of Downtown Baptist Church of Ocala, Fla.
She was retired from the West Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs.
She was previously employed by Sears Catalog Store and Citizens National Bank.
Funeral Arrangements
: Memorial services will be at the Downtown Baptist Church in Ocala, Fla., at 6:30 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Tracy Willis officiating and her grandson, the Rev. Matthew Murphy, assisting. Interment will be in Mountain State Memorial Gardens in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Elkins. From 29 Jan 2002.

A joint memorial service will be held for Kathleen "Kay" Phares Murphy and daughter, Sondra "Soni" Sutton-Jones at the First Baptist Church, Randolph Avenue, Elkins, on June 23 at 2 p.m. with Dr. Marvin Parli officiating. Tina L. Myers, 85, of Davis, passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas.
She was born June 9, 1917, in Dry Fork, a daughter of the late Samuel French and Fanny Lenora Roy Davis.
She is survived by her daughter, Judi and husband, Bill McCoy Sr., of Royal Oak, Mich.; her son, Harold and wife, Betty Myers, of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Rena Moreland of Elk Garden, and Dr. Ruth Meredith Davis of Cross Village, Mich.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Myers in 1949; one brother and two sisters.
Mrs. Myers worked in housekeeping at Blackwater Falls. She was a member of the Davis United Methodist Church and a 1935 graduate of Thomas High School.
Friends will be received today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Davis United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Winter officiating. Interment will follow in the Davis Cemetery. From 13 Aug 2002.
