Arnold W. Lahman
Arnold William Lahman, 83 of Petersburg, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Grant County Nursing Home, where he resided the past month.

Hunter R. Lamb
Hunter Robert Lamb, 89, of Route 3, Box 334, Buckhannon, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, in his home in Buckhannon.
Mr. Lamb was born Sept. 7, 1912, in Lewis County, a son of the late Robert S. and Lydia Woofter Lamb.
On Dec. 12, 1948, he married Dorothy Lane Lamb, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Charlotte Cooke, Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Stephen Robert Lamb, San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Madeline Moody, Price Town; a grandson, Zac Cooke, Raleigh, N.C.; two granddaughters, Tonya Bisby, Wake Forest, N.C., and Tracey Lynam, Raleigh, N.C.; a great-grandson, Brandon Bisby, Wake Forest, N.C.; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Lane Bisby, Wake Forest, N.C.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Lamb; and four sisters, Garnett Long, Bonnie Moody, Lucy Mae Lamb and Annabelle Vaughn.
Mr. Lamb was an iron worker for Bethlehem Steel. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in the South Pacific during World War II aboard the USS Enterprise.

Annabell W. Lambert
Annabell White Lambert, 63, a resident of the Bell Crouch Road near Huttonsville, departed this life Sunday evening, Sept. 1, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Kathleen Taylor.
She had been in declining health and death was attributed to lung cancer.
She was born Sept. 14, 1938, at Wymer, the daughter of the late Coslo White and Elva Catherine Carr White.
On July 26, 1957, in Baltimore, Md., she was married to William Lambert, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen Taylor, Mill Creek, and Debra Hickman, Richmond, Va.; seven brothers, Dale R. White, Carlisle, Pa., Norley, Norman, Robert, Roger, Gary and Coslo White Jr., all of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Geneva McCauley and Patty McGuire, both of Baltimore, Md., and Ella Sprouse, Abingdon, Md.; five grandchildren, Robert Sparks and Kimberly Taylor, both of Mill Creek, Valerie and Melissa Mills, both of Richmond, Va., and Barbara Burdette, Beckley; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Elsie Marie Turner.
Annabell attended Harman High School, had worked as a cook at Snowshoe Mountain Resort and the Big Springs Market, wa a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary at Baltimore, Md., had previously attended the Friendship Baptist Church at Valley Head and more recently attended the Valley Independent Baptist Church at Huttonsville.
Friends will be received at the Valley Independent Baptist Church on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Pastor Frank Stanley will officiate and interment will follow at the Valley Head Cemetery at Valley Head. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. From 3 Sep 2002.

Audra G. Lambert
Audra Gall Lambert, 106, a long-time resident of 202 Brandenburg St., in Belington, and a resident of Barbour County Good Samaritan Center in Belington since 1993, departed this life at 9:55 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, in the center. She had been in failing health for quite sometime.
She was born Aug. 27, 1895, on a farm near Arden, the third daughter of the late John Jay and Elizabeth Carpenter Gall.
On Aug. 24, 1936, she was united in marriage to the Rev. B.B. Lambert, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal South Church in Belington, who preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1937. She had never remarried.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Lambert attended the Broaddus College. She received a bachelor’s degree from Davis & Elkins College and a master’s degree in education from West Virginia University. She spent her entire career as an educator. Upon retirement in 1963, she had served 50 years in public schools as a teacher, principal and general supervisor. After retirement she taught at Alderson-Broaddus College for a period of time.
She was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Belington, where she served as youth counselor, a teacher in the church school and on the official board of the church. She was also a member of Federated Women’s Club of Belington.
She was a past Worthy Grand Matron of the Belington Chapter 68, Order of Eastern Star, charter member and past Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution and past president of the Philippi branch of the American Association of University Women. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Delta Pi teaching honorary societies.
In 1986, she was honored for 75 years spent working in the 4-H program and in 1990 the Philippi-Barbour County Chamber of Commerce honored her with the Woman of the Year award.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington and on Thursday until 11 a.m., the funeral hour, when services will be conducted from the funeral home parlor with the Rev. Arden Beck and the Rev. Rose "Jo" McCartney officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery at Belington. On Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. there will be a memorial service conducted by the Belington Chapter 68 OES. From 2 Apr 2002.

Betty E. Lambert
Betty Elizabeth Valentine Lambert, 71, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2002, at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.
She was born Sept. 13, 1930, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Henry Clay and Ollie Marie Chenoweth Valentine.
On Aug. 5, 1972, in Elkins, she was married to Glenn Allen Lambert, who preceded her in death on April 25, 2002.
She is survived by two brothers, William R. Valentine, Elkins, and Jack Valentine of Belington; two sisters, Jean Hale of Elkins, and Mrs. Robert L. (Inabelle) Clark Sr., Wellsburg; three nephews, Rocky and Donald Hale
and Thomas Valentine; three nieces, Mrs. Glenn (Donna) Sycafoose, Mrs. Jerry (Lisa) Digman and Mrs. Mike (Nykki) Shears; and several grandnieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death was one brother, Henry Thomas Valentine.
Mrs. Lambert attended the schools of Elkins and was employed by Dutch Oven Bakery and Bata Shoe Co. She was a Protestant by faith.
Friends may call from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. F.L. "Wink" McQuain officiating. Interment will

Charles J. Lambert
Charles Junior "Charlie" Lambert, 56, a resident of Route 2, the Channell Road, Mill Creek, passed away Saturday, June 1, 2002, at 4:20 p.m. at Cassity, from an apparent heart attack. He had been in his usual health and death was sudden and unexpected.
He was born June 25, 1945, at Valley Bend, a son of Opal Collins Lambert, who survives at Mill Creek, and the late Elza Lambert.
On April 11, 1970, he was united in marriage to the former Wilma Taylor, who survives at Route 2, the Channell Road, Mill Creek.
In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Lambert and Mrs. Warren (Christina) Chewning, both of the Adolph Road; one son, Charles J. Lambert, at home; three sisters, Patricia Taylor of the Adolph Road, Mrs. Roger (Delores) Haney of Elkins, and Darlene Lambert of Valley Bend; and two brothers, Leonard Lambert of Valley Bend, and Robert Lambert of Mill Creek; his father-in-law, Charlie Taylor of Mill Creek; two granddaughters, Britney Nichole Fetty and Nakayla Paige Doyle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death besides his father were a sister, Patty Lambert; and a brother, Don Lambert.
He had been formerly employed by Coastal Lumber Company and at the time of his death he was a stacker for Hayes Scott Rustic Fence and Lumber. He was a Pentecostal by faith.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Tuesday after 6 p.m. On Wednesday, he will be moved to the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church, where friends may call from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Glenn A. Lambert, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, passed away Thursday morning, April 25, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Herman Lambert Sr.
Herman Donald Lambert Sr., 86, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Monday morning, July 29, 2002, at Broaddus Hospital in Philippi. He had been in declining health for the past six weeks.
He was born Aug. 3, 1915, at Flanagan Hill, Dry Fork, a son of the late Walter Wythe Lambert and Verna Susan Waybright.
In 1939, he was married to Ruth Irene Gross, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 1, 1941, he was married to Eloene Yvonne Huff Lambert, who survives.
Surviving are three sons, H. Donald Lambert Jr. and Jeanie, Elkins, Howard Eliott Lambert and Patricia, Perkiomenville, Pa., and William Wythe "Bill" Lambert and Lois, Parsons; one daughter, Donna Jean Schoonover and Bill, Grafton; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He attended the schools of Tucker County and was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1933. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan College. He was a former employee of the Western Maryland Railroad, the Reynold’s Bus Line, and The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., the Barrick’s Ford Co., and Webb Ford Co., where he was parts, service and purchasing manager. He was a salesman for Lambert Chevrolet Co. of Parsons, from 1964 until his retirement Aug. 1, 1980. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where he had served as Lay Leader and Sunday School teacher of the men’s class. He was a church trustee and parsonage trustee and was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Men. He served as church treasurer for 15 years. He was a member of the Holly Meadows Country Club, where he had served as president, board of trustees and chairman of the administrative board. he was a member of Parsons High School Alumni Association, where he served as vice president since its beginning. He was inducted into the PHS Alumni Hall of Fame in 2001.
The family will receive friends at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home inParsons from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Thursday at 2 p.m. The Rev. J. Kenneth B. Lambert
Kenneth Blaine "Kenny" Lambert, 42, a resident of 914 South Davis Ave., Elkins, passed away at 8:22 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2002, at his residence. He had been in his usual health and death was sudden and unexpected.
He was born Dec. 18, 1959, at Elkins, a son of Delbert B. and Gladys Brenwald Lambert, who survive in Elkins.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his fiancee, Rita Breaux, South Davis Avenue, Elkins; one sister, Mrs. Danny (Marlene) Nesler, McComb, Ohio; two nieces, Mrs. Matthew (Carissa) Hensen, and Mrs. Jay (Kelly) Gower; four great-nieces, Logan, Lexi and Madison Hensen and Lillianna Gower; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was a graduate of Harman High School. He then joined the U.S. Air Force, having been honorably discharged in 1983 after serving four years. He worked construction in Virginia and had also been employed at Coastal Lumber Co. He loved the outdoors and working on cars. He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. today. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel Wednesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Leon Hevener, pastor of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Lambert Family Cemetery at Wymer. The Tygart Valley Post 3647 VFW and the H.W. Lola M. Lambert
Lola Mae Lambert, 92, of Franklin, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Katie George, with whom she lived.
She was born Feb. 10, 1910, at Osceola, a daughter of the late George Homan Eye and Mary Elizabeth Moyers Eye.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Smith Creek Church of the Brethren for 80 years, being the oldest member of the congregation. She served 73 years in the church ladies aid society. She was the 1984 Pendleton County Mother of the Year and the 1988 Pendleton County Belle.
On May 7, 1927, she married Esta John "Keggy" Lambert, who preceded her in death on April 9, 1983.
Surviving are five daughters, Kathleen Kettlewell of Wheeling, Imogene Tingler of Elkins, Dottie Miller of Beltsville, Md., Linda Lambert of Truxton, N.Y., and Katie George of Franklin; four sons, Clinton Lambert of Marina, Calif., Russell Carroll Lambert of Harrisonburg, Va., Ervin Dale Lambert of Bridgewater, Va., and Benny Lambert of Grottoes, Va.; two sisters, Irene Allamong of Winchester, Va., and Erma Johnson of Suffolk, Va.; 20 grandchildren, including one granddaughter, whom she raised, Barbara Miller of Rockville, Md.; 18 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren and a special beloved pet, Taz.
She was preceded in death by her son and daughter-in-law, George and Poldi Lambert.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Smith Creek Church of the Brethren with Pastor Max Fisher and Pastor Dan Ludwick officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin. Friends may call at the Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin after 8 a.m. today. Odeth Harness Lambert, 89, of River Road in Durbin, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
Friends were received at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale. Funeral services were held today at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment followed in Arbovale Cemetery with military honors. From 5 July 2002.

Virginia D. Lambert
Virginia Delcie Vandevander Lambert, 75, of Elkins, formerly of Frank, passed away at her home on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002.
Mrs. Lambert was born Aug. 12, 1927, at Cherry Grove, a daughter of the late John and Bertie Lambert Vandevander.
She was a member of the Durbin Calvary Gospel Church, the BFD Ladies Auxiliary, a housewife, worked at the Forestry Service as a maintenance worker and worked with the SCSFP program.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oakland Lambert; a son, Dewayne J. Lambert; two grandchildren and two sisters, Minnie Judy an Zinnia Hinkle.
Surviving are five daughters, Lucille Mallow, Sandie Greathouse and Pamela Ober, all of Bartow, Patricia Dehaven of Frank, and Wanda Greathouse of Durbin; five sons, William O. Lambert and Dale A. Lambert, both of Bartow, Roger L. Lambert of Dailey, and Ronnie T. Lambert and Danny D. Lambert, both of Elkins; six half sisters, Carol Thompson of Elkins, Martha Wimmer of Franklin, Lorine of Topeka, Kan., Nola of Florida, Reva Rittenour of Mt. Jackson, Va., and Revilla Sivers of Newmarket, Va.; three half brothers, Carl Wimmer of Newmarket, Va., Gilbert Wimmer of Carlisle, Pa., and Johnny Wimmer of Timberville, Va.; 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Ronald Roy Lampkin, 60, of French Creek, passed away Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his home.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Lampkin at French Creek; daughter, Thalia Fisher and son-in-law, Chris Fisher, and one granddaughter expected from Gee Lick, Weston; daughter, Lorraine Lampkin, Weston; son, Ronald R. "Sam" Lampkin Jr. and wife, Vicky Lampkin, from Greensboro, N.C.; granddaughter, Emily Lampkin; and grandson, Zachery Lampkin.

Mary Rebecca Kuykendall Landes, 91, of Baltimore, Md., and formerly of Petersburg, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, in Baltimore.

Ona Landes
Ona Landes, 93, of Crigler Lane, Franklin, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, in Harrisonburg Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Landes was born Dec. 13, 1908, in Riverton, a daughter of the late Rollie and Belva Thompson Bland.
She married Willie Lanes, who preceded her in death on March 19, 1998.
Surviving are five daughters, Betty McCoy, Harrisonburg, Va., Helen Skidmore and Roxie Hammer, both of Franklin, Mary Rose Newman and Carol June Evick, both of Harrisonburg, Va.; two sons, Charles R. Landes, Moorefield, and William Daniel Landes, Nashville; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nellie Rogers.
Mrs. Landes was a homemaker.
She was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church.

Erma E. Lane
Erma Ellen Lane, 81, of Valley Care, Buckhannon, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, in Valley Care, Buckhannon.
Mrs. Lane was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Durbin, a daughter of the late Asa Harold and Amanda Alice Collins Wright.
On May 5, 1938, she married Basil H. "Teter" Lane, who preceded her in death on March 21, 1999.
Surviving are two sons, Derry Lane and wife, Karen and Kyle Lane and wife, Judy, all of Buckhannon; three brothers, Berwyn Wright, Morgantown, Boyd "Coonie" Wright, Durbin, and Jennings Wright, Philippi; three grandsons, Todd Lane, Randy Lane and Patrick Lane, all of Buckhannon; and a great-grandson, Brandon Lane, Buckhannon.
She was preceded in death by one son, Dale Edward Lane; one brother, Wilbur Wright; and one sister, Edna Thorpe.

Gayle O. Lane, 76, of Rock Cave, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Upshur County, July 6, 1926, a son of the late John R. and Elizabeth Sims Lane.
He is survived by one daughter, Theresa Stencil of Amherst, Ohio; one son, Terry Lane of Amherst, Ohio; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two sisters, Dortha Carroll of Glenford, Ohio, and Leahbell "Boots" Friend of Buckhannon.
He was preceded in death by one brother, the Rev. Lester "Stick" Lane; and two sisters, Mabel "Peg" Linger and Onita "Patty" Smith.
Mr. Lane was a veteran serving with the U.S. Navy.

John L. Landis Sr.
John L. Landis Sr., 70, of Route 2, Box 231, French Creek, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at his home in Gould.
Mr. Landis was born Nov. 22, 1931, in Sand Run, a son of the late William Forest and Loverna Pearl Armstrong Landis.
On Nov. 24, 1984, he married Martha Jane Burr Landis, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, John L. Landis Jr. and wife, Deb, Buckhannon; one stepson, James H. Allen and wife, Nettie, French Creek; one daughter, Debra Lou O’Dell and husband, Gary, Hickory, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth Mason and husband, Tom, French Creek; three brothers, Dale Landis, Robert Landis and Jim Landis, all of Buckhannon; one sister, Dorothy Phillips, Christiansburg, Va.; two grandsons, John Landis III, Morgantown, and Shawn Michael O’Dell, Hickory, N.C.; two granddaughters, Areta Carr, French Creek, and Cassie Jo O’Dell, Hickory, N.C.; and two stepgrandsons, Joshua Oldaker and Dylan Allen, both of French Creek.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Forest Landis.
Mr. Landis was a coal miner and worked for Upshur Coal Co. He was a member of United Mine Workers Union 1938. He served in the U.S. Army.

Edward H. Lanham
Edward H. Lanham, 79, a resident of the Audra Road in Belington, departed this life at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, following a three-week illness.
He was born July 20, 1922, at Clarksburg, a son of the late Hartzel B. and Daisey Kesling Lanham.
He was formerly married to Maxine Jackson, who survives at Philippi.

Mr. Lanham was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He was a retired coalminer and a Protestant by faith.

Van Buren "Hade" Lanham, 91, of Route 2, Mill Creek, died at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Lanham was born Feb. 18, 1910, in Hemlock, a son of the late Harman and Rebecca Wamsley Lanham.
On April 16, 1934, in Hemlock, he married Icie Currence Lanham, who survives in Mill Creek.

Charles W. Lantz, 87, of Lima, Ohio, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home.
He was born March 18, 1914, in Philippi to Charles L. and Delta Roeburner Lantz.
Mr. Lantz retired in 1980 from the Siferd and Hosselman Co. in Lima. He was a 1938 graduate of Davis & Elkins College in Elkins and was a Sons of the American Revolution member.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post No. 96 and the VFW Post No. 1275, both in Lima. He was a lifelong musician with several Lima area bands.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles H. Lantz in 1992; and a brother, John Lantz, and a sister, Marie Lantz.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean H. Hunter Lantz; a son, Phil, and his wife, Paula Lantz, Tipp City, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Judith Lantz, Troy, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Carrie Virginia Lantz, Elkins; four grandchildren, Kristin and husband Jamie Penny, Trenton, Ohio, Chuck and his wife, Vicki Lantz, Chicago, Ill., Jon Lantz, Denver, Colo., and Sarah Lantz-Ramsay and her husband, Mack, Tipp City; and great-grandchildren, Amanda and Ian Ramsay.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Frings and Bayliff Funeral Home, 327 W. Main St., Tipp City, Ohio 45371. Sister Christine Schenk will officiate. Maxine Curry Lantz, 75, of Durbin, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Mrs. Lantz was born May 13, 1926, at Durbin, a daughter of the late Harry E. and Virgie Nottingham Curry.
She was married for 60 years to Samuel W. Lantz, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Karen Collins and husband, Arthur, of Bartow, Francis Greathouse and husband, Dale, and Patricia Greathouse and husband, Bud, all of Durbin; two sons, Woodford Lantz and wife, Joan of Durbin, and Leon Lantz and wife, Bev, of Wheeling; five sisters, Georgia Nelson of Terrell, Texas, Pearl Mace of Ridgeley, Ellouise Hinson of Columbia, S.C., Sandra Kay Mullenax of Hagerstown, Md., and Diane Curry of Hagerstown, Md.; one brother, Franklin Curry of Durbin; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one stepgrandchild and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Arlene Fitzgerald and Opal Moore; and one brother, Leonard Curry.
She was a lifelong resident of Durbin. She was a member of Durbin Brethren Church. She was also a member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly).

Robert M. Lantz
Robert Matt Lantz, 18, of Route 2, Buckhannon, the Ivy community, died Saturday, March 30, 2002. Death was due to an automobile accident.
He was born Feb. 20, 1984, in Elkins, a son of Donna Shipman Lantz, who survives at the Ivy community, and the late Charles "Bob" Lantz, who preceded him in death on June 16, 2001.
Surviving are one sister, Jessica Marie Lantz of the Ivy community; maternal grandmother, Melva Lambert Shipment of the Ivy community; paternal grandmother, Anna Cornell Lantz West, Buckhannon; and paternal great-grandmother, Lou Lantz, French Creek.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Bobbi Jo Lantz; maternal grandfather, Donald Shipman; and paternal grandfather, Charles D. Lantz.
He was a senior at Buckhannon-Upshur High School and a student in the auto body division at Fred W. Eberle Technical Center. He won first place in the VICA Competition and would have represented the center in the state competition. He had plans to attend WYO Tech in Blairsville, Pa., and continue his education in auto body collision repair. He was a member of Tallmansville Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be at Tallmansville Baptist Church Thursday at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating. Zena Coleen Lantz, 94, of Circleville, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Pendlton Nursing Home in Franklin.

William LaPrevotte
Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Comdr. William "Bill" LaPrevotte, 70, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, after losing a 2 1/2 year battle to cancer.
He was born in Wheeling, and spent his boyhood in Elkins. After joining the Navy in 1948 as a yeoman seaman, he met his future wife, Jean Cofield, that same year while stationed in Newport, R.I., aboard the USS Yellowstone. They were married three years later. Bill’s decorated military career spanned 32 years and included a tour of duty in Paris, France, in 1955 where he worked at SHAPE in logistics and represented the United States and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe ceremony officially welcoming Germany into NATO.
In 1961, he was with Naval Research in London, England, where he was commissioned an officer in 1963. He served as administrative officer of the Seabees in Davisville, R.I., and in 1966 he served as administrative officer of the aircraft carrier, USS Essex, until its decommissioning in 1969 and the family moved to Northern Virginia where he was aide to the Chief of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C.
In 1972, he and his family made their last move to Virginia Beach. Here, he was assigned security office to NATO at SACLANT, Norfolk. His final assignment was Fleet Postal Officer, CINCLANT FLT, Norfolk.
He was a member of the Retired Officers’ Association, the Knights of Columbus and was on the executive committee, the board of directors and chairman of the membership committee of the Harbor Club, downtown Norfolk. He was passionate about sports and excelled in many including track, swimming and basketball in his youth and golf, softball and racquetball in later years.
The family would like to thank the nurses at Lake Taylor Transitional, Azalea Wing and Sentara Leigh for their wonderful care and support.
A memorial service was held at the Church of The Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Road and a reception followed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of one’s choice.

Kenneth Lashua
Kenneth Lashua, 63, of Nella’s Nursing Home, Crystal Springs, died at 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
He was born Aug. 26, 1939, in Leominster, Mass., a son of the late Joe and Kathleen Breault.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth Lashua Jr., Crystal Springs; two sisters, Lucye Brewer, Wooster, Mass., and Doris Botts; and one brother, Edward G. breault, Wooster, Mass.
He was a bookkeeper for Scioto Discount Store. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a Catholic by faith.

Dennis R. Law
Dennis Ray Law, 51, a resident of Dailey, passed away Sunday evening, May 20, 2002.
He was born Sept. 19, 1950, at Petersburg, a son of Nellie Catherine Bland Law, who survives and the late Byrl Lyndon Law.
On Dec. 24, 1973, at Glenville, he married the former Debra Gwinn Legg, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Zachary Ian Law of Morgantown; one daughter, Jordan Marissa Jory Law of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one brother, Danny Byrl Law of Grantsville; and one sister, Jeanne Law Halkowitch of Williamsburg, Va.
He was a graduate of Glenville State College with a bachelor of science degree in business administration and was self- employed in the timber business. He was a member of Tygart Valley Lions Club and the First United Methodist Church of Elkins.
At the request of the deceased, his remains will be cremated. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Elkins with the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley officiating. Alva Joy Lawrence, 95, of Dry Fork, passed away Friday, March 1, 2002, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas.
He was born Feb. 13, 1912, in Dry Fork, a son of the late Floyd and Minnie Simmons Lawrence.
Survivors include his wife, Arizona F. Lawrence; three sons, Perley Lawrence and Jamie Lawrence of Dry Fork, and Virgil Lawrence of Rawlings, Md.; two daughters, Hilda Smith of New Freedome, Pa., and Norma Trent of Johnston, Tenn.; two brothers, Ashley Lawrence of Cumberland, Md., and Cecil Lawrence of Cresaptown, Md.; one sister, Mildred Moreland of Silver Springs, Md.; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, two brothers, one half brother and three sisters.
Mr. Lawrence was a farmer and an iron worker. He was a member of Iron Workers Local 568 of Cumberland, Md., the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Cresaptown, Md., and a member of the Dry Fork Assembly of God Church.

Lorren J. Lawrence
Lorren Jack Lawrence, 61, a resident of Hendricks, departed this life Saturday morning, April 6, 2002, at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was attributed to a massive heart attack.
He was born June 14, 1940, at Lanesville, a son of the late James Monroe Lawrence and Goldie Marie Pennington Lawrence.
On Aug. 29, 1958, at Grantsville, Md., he was married to the former Donna June Parsons, who survives.

Lawrence and wife, Martha, Elkins, Samuel D. Lawrence and wife, Joan, Belington, and Sheldon Lawrence Pennington and wife, Kathy, Winchester, Va.; four sisters, Charlotte B. Pennington and husband, Otto, Elkins, Barbara S. Berry and husband, Bill, Parsons, Lola K. Pennington and husband, Junior, Hendricks, and Althea J. Judy and husband, David, Elkins; 18 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, 41 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James Lawrence Jr.; and two sisters, Gladys M. Roy and Maxine F. Menge.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1958. He was a truck driver for more than 40 years. He owned and operated Lawrence & Sons Truck and Autos at Belington for five years, when he retired. He was a member of the Hambleton Pentecostal Church of God of which he was a Deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He was an avid Indian Motorcycle and Harley Davidson Motorcycle enthusiast and was an avid outdoorsman and hunter.
Friends will be received at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Tuesday, Mr. Lawrence will be moved to Hambleton Pentecostal Church of God, where friends may call from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Jay A. Lawrence, 40, of Leatherleaf Court, DeLand, Fla., died Monday, April 8, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Lawrence was born in Lakeland, Fla., a son of Charlaine Fuhrman, who survives in Elkins, who provided for his care during his illness.
Also surviving are one son, Jay Lawrence Jr., Orange City, Fla; one daughter, Kaitlin Lawrence, Orange City, Fla.; one brother, Bill and wife, Kim Lawrence, DeLand, Fla.; and his paternal grandmother, Emily Lawrence, DeLand, Fla.
Mr. Lawrence was a graduate of Taylor High School in Pierson, Fla. He was a plumber.
He enjoyed the beach and three wheeler and he loved his children.

James F. Lawson, 74, a resident of Route 4, Philippi, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, in Broaddus Hospital.
He was born Aug. 23, 1927, at Philippi, a son of the late Ralph and Ethel Clark Lawson.
He was united in marriage on Nov. 26, 1948, to the former Barbara A. Sparks, who preceded him in death on May 16, 1999.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Michael Lewis, Mineral Wells; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey M. and Debbie Lawson, Fresno, Calif.; one half brother, Eddie Stevens, Inwood; four grandchildren, Joshua Farris, Lisa Farris, Morehead Lawson and Jonathan Lawson.
Mr. Lawson was employed as a clerk and served in various capacities at the Philippi Hardware for 46 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Trouts Unlimited and a member of the Wood Carving Artist Colony. He displayed his wood carvings at the Augusta Heritage Festival. He was a United Methodist by faith.
In honor of Mr. Lawson’s request his body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, with the Rev. Nellie Rosena Layton, 88, of Petersburg, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in Grant Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Layton was born April 21, 1913, in Landes, a daughter of the late Wade Hamilton Kesner and Anna Florence Whetzel Kesner.
She married George Emory Layton, who preceded her in death on March 29, 1990.
Surviving are a daughter, Georgia L. Mahmoud, Alexandria, Va.; two stepdaughters, Burnell Hiser, Baltimore, Md., and Eleanor Hinkle, Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg; two sons, Paul J. Layton, Goldsboro, N.C., and Emory J. Layton, Springfield, Va.; two stepsons, Vernon Layton, Petersburg, and Stanley Layton, Springfield, Va.; a brother, Raymond Kesner, Dorcas; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Allen Layton; a stepson, Virgil Broke Layton; a stepgrandson, Jerome Layton; two sisters, Delphia Judy and Evelyn Thorne; and five brothers, infant Glenn Kesner, Walter H. Kesner and Cletus Kesner, Fred H. Kesner and Ernest Q. Kesner.
Mrs. Layton was a member of North Mill Creek Baptist Church in Dorcas.

Harriet F. Lear, 93, of Route 1, French Creek, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Mrs. Lear was born May 9, 1908, in Philippi, a daughter of the late Truman and Dora Chenoweth Boyles.
On Nov. 24, 1928, she married Wayne C. Lear, who preceded her in death on July 19, 1995.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Rentz, Rootstown, Ohio; two sons, George Lear and wife, Cecille, Streetsboro, Ohio, and John Lear and wife, Susan, Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, Timothy, Jennifer and Amy Lear, Jody and husband, Don Coe, and Dean Wilcox; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlan Coe; and one brother, Frank Boyles, Valprasio, Ind.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Morgan, Aubrey, Arno and Fred Boyles; and one sister, Mabel Wyatt.
Mrs. Lear was a homemaker and a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church of Philippi.
As a young woman living in Akron, Harriet worked in the personnel department of Goodyear and performed locally with her husband and brother-in-law as the musical group, the Lear Hawaiian Trio. Following World War II in 1945, she and her husband, Wayne, moved to Streetsboro where they owned and operated a farm. During those years they adopted and reared three loving children. In 1978, they moved to French Creek in her home state of West Virginia where they enjoyed the richness of good friends and peaceful surroundings.
Friends will be received at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be at Jerusalem Cemetery in Philippi Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William C. Juanita Leary
Juanita Leary, 70, of Pasadena, Md., for the past 52 years, died Friday, March 8, 2002, in North Arundel Hospital, following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 1, 1931, in Elkins.
She was married for 44 years to Charles Homer Leary, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Thomas Leary and John Michael Leary, both of Pasadena, Md.; four daughters, Elaine Gray, Lori Leary and Pam Leary, all of Pasadena, Md., and Debbie Jefferies, Glen Burnie, Md.; one sister, Barbara Clapp, Pasadena, Md.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Women’s Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1176, Stoney Creek Democratic Club, Senior Citizens of the Stoney Creek Democratic Club. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, babysitting and spending time with her family and friends.

Lewis W. "Happy" Leary, 82, a resident of Sullivan’s Crossing, passed away Monday morning at his home.
He was born March 18, 1920, in Randolph County, a son of the late Joshua C. and Nancy Jane Marteney Leary.
He is survived by his lifetime companion, Carol R. Thompson.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, three brothers, and seven half-brothers and sisters.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the European Theater during World War II. While serving his country, he was awarded numerous medals and ribbons including two Bronze Stars.
He was an employee of Allegheny Lumber Co. for 22 years prior to his retirement, and he attended the Central Baptist Church near Elkins.

Judy Delores Allessio Leatherman, 74, of Martin, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
Friends will be received at Schaeffer Funeral Home today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at Antioch Church of God Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Knobley Memorial Gardens in Martin. . From 29 Apr 2002.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church in Wilsontown, with the Rev. Sue Lowther officiating. Interment of ashes will follow in Wilsontown Cemetery. Isaac R. Lewis
Isaac R. "Ike" Lewis, 70, of HC 78, Selbyville, Randolph County, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at his home.
He was born July 28, 1931, in Randolph County, a son of the late George O. and Nora C. Mealey Lewis.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Zickefoose Lewis; one daughter, June Coffman and husband, Patrick; three brothers, Richard and wife, Katie Lewis, and John Lewis, both of Selbyville, and James and wife, Ruth Lewis of Buckhannon; and one sister, Sally Roby of Buckhannon.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Lewis and Edward Lewis; one sister, Lucy Lewis; and one infant sibling.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and retired from Corharts after 24 years of service. He was currently employed as caretaker of James Curry Library Park.
Friends will be received Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel. Mr. Lewis will lie in state from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, Sunday at Pleasant Dale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Conrad Tenney and the Rev. Don Dugas officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Dale Cemetery. From 5 Apr 2002.

Patricia K. Lewis
Patricia K. Lewis, 46, of 28 Fairlawn Drive, Buckhannon, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, in Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
Ms. Lewis was born April 17, 1955, in Buckhannon, a daughter of Harold A. Lewis and Elsie Robinson Lewis, who survive in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are a sister, Vicki Lewis, Idamay; and four uncles.
Ms. Lewis attended North Buckhannon United Methodist Church.
Funeral Arrangements
: Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Wease Day officiating. Interment will follow in Buckhannon Memorial Park in Buckhannon. From 22 Feb 2002
