Glen R. Galford
Glen Ray Galford, 59, of Crawford, died suddenly Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, in Clarksburg.
He was born Feb. 26, 1943, in Crawford, a son of Lloyd Everett and Freda Pauline Pritt Galford.
He was preceded in death by both parents and three sisters, Loyal Fonda Galford, Betty Lou Galford and Wannafae Galford; and a nephew, Benjamin James Galford.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Josephine Perkins Galford of Crawford, whom he married on Aug. 16, 1980; two brothers, Lloyd Pritt Galford of Cookeville, Tenn., and James E. Galford of Houston, Texas; one nephew, Jeffrey Galford, Pittsburgh; and two nieces, Kyler Elizabeth Galford and Malinda Susan Galford, both of Houston.
Mr. Galford had retired as a groundskeeper for the Oakbridge Country Club Golf Course in Jacksonville, Fla.
Friends will be received at Alkire Funeral Chapel in Ireland Saturday from noon until 2 p.m., with funeral services starting at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Fair Haven Cemetery. From 15 Aug 2002.

E. Cline Garber
Ernest Cline Garber, 93, of Petersburg, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the Grant County Nursing Home where he had resided since Jan. 2, 2001.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Gregory A. Rotruck will officiate and interment will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery. From 4 Nov 2002.

Ella Gardner
Ella Gardner, 86, of Dunmore, passed away at her daughters home in Dunmore on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002.
Mrs. Gardner was born on Nov. 6, 1916, in Hamburg, Germany, a daughter of the late Adolf and Minna Schleu Miersen.
She attended the Baxter Presbyterian Church in Dunmore. She was a member of the Riverside California Moose Lodge. She was a mail carrier and a homemaker. She was drafted into the German Army, where she was a telephone operator during World War II.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Gardner.
Surviving are one daughter, Elke N. Taylor and husband, Jerry, of Dunmore; two grandchildren, Jeffery Taylor and wife, Ronda, of Dunmore, and Randy Taylor and wife, Tammy, of Mentor, Ohio; and three great-grandchildren, Courtney Taylor and Kendra Taylor, both of Dunmore, and Zachary Taylor of Mentor, Ohio;
Friends will be received at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Louie G. Gassnola
Louie G. Gassnola, 72, a former resident of Montrose and a patient in Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas since October 2000, passed away at 12:50 a.m. Sunday, June 9, 2002, in the nursing home.
He was born April 2, 1930, in Elkins, a son of the late Antonio and Catherine Monda Gassnola.
On Feb. 23, 1957, he was married to Leah Jean Gassnola, who preceded him in death on May 14, 2000.
He is survived by three sons, Louie G. "Bud" Gassnola and wife, Kathy, and Darrell Shayne Gassnola and wife, Pam, all of Elkins, Jeffrey Craig Gassnola and wife, Kelly, of Belington; two daughters, Mrs. Alan (Sue) Ketchem of Elkview, and Rita Lynn Gassnola of Elkins; one brother, Joe Gassnola of Belington; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Ralph, Tony and Fred; and two sisters, Grace and Rose.
Mr. Gassnola was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed as a molder for Kelly Foundry for many years and was a Catholic by faith.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Father Lino Ebjer officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. State Memorial Gardens, where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite. John David Gatrell, 71, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.

John D. Gatrell
John David Gatrell, 71, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Tuesday evening, Aug. 20, 2002, at his home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
He was born May 23, 1931, at Bretz, a son of the late Elmer "Bus" Gatrell and Ann Ours Gatrell.
On June 19, 1957, at Bolt, he was married to the former Donnia L. Bishop, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, John B "Butch" Gatrell, Redding, Conn., R. Len Gatrell and wife, Sue, Frederick, Md.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1949. He worked for the Fingerprint Division for the FBI of Washington, D.C. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from West Virginia Tech with a degree in printing management. He was production control manager for the Merkle Press at Washington, D.C. and the Henniage Print Company at Rockville, Md. He was a former salesman for WesVaco. He was a former agent for the U.S. Information Agency. He retired in 1995 from the Bowater Paper Co. at South Carolina as a tech representative. He was a member of the Pythagoras Lodge 128 AF & AM of Parsons. He was an experienced authority on the U.S. Constitution and the Civil War. He was an artist, an avid reader and gardener.
The family will receive friends at Barb & Greenlief Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Mabel S. Gaudet
Mabel S. Gaudet, 85, of Buckhannon, formerly of Glady Fork, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
She was born March 5, 1917, in Glady Fork, the daughter of the late Hayes and Clydia Simons Cutright.
She was united in marriage on Dec. 17, 1938, to Stanley J. Gaudet, who preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1959.
She is survived by one brother, Hayes Junior "Cutty" Cutright of Buckhannon; one daughter, Mary J. Gaudet Shoulders of Buckhannon; three sons, Larry N. Gaudet of Buckhannon, James S. Gaudet of Lynchburg, Va., and John "Jake" Gaudet of Anchorage, Alaska; and one stepson, Stanley J. Gaudet, Jr., of Los Angeles. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Frederic M. Gaudet; one infant daughter, two grandchildren, two brothers and one sister.
She was a 1945 graduate of Dermaway University in Detroit, was a beautician since Feb. 19, 1945, was the owner of Mabel’s Beauty Salon on East Main Street in Buckhannon, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Moose, the Elks, the AARP and the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
The viewing will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel in Buckhannon. The rosary will be recited Thursday at 8 p.m. in the funeral chapel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father James McCafferty as celebrant. The burial will follow at the Rocky Ford Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Eula H. Gay
Eula Haas Gay, 92, of Elkins Convalescent Home, Elkins, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the home.
She was born April 28, 1910, at Lost River, a daughter of the late Clarence and Bessie Bowman Haas.
She married Paul Lightner Gay Sr., who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Margaret Gay, Buckhannon; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Post Gay, Bramwell; one sister, Mildred Branson, New Market, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Paul Lightner Gay Jr.; and one brother, Welton Haas.
Mrs. Gay was a resident manager of 2400 Pennsylvania Ave., North West, Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Order Eastern Star of Harrisonburg, Va., was very active in the Democratic Party and a member of Wesley Sunday School class. She was a member of the Lois Circle of United Methodist Women at the First United Methodist Church of Buckhannon.

Mary R. Gear
Mary Ruth Gear, 78, of Huttonsville, died at 4:50 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Gear was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Hyder and Belva Godwin Phillips.
On July 5, 1942, she married James W. Gear, who survives in Huttonsville.
Also surviving are a daughter, Margaret Jean Steinruck, Springs Hill, Fla.; two sons, Charles Glenn Gear and wife, Christine, Elkins, and Philip Lane Gear and wife, Cynthia, Mill Creek; two sisters, Roxie Workman, Huber Heights, Ohio, and Maxine Phillips Gum, Bridgeport; a sister-in-law, Vicky Phillips, Clarksburg; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Clair, Hugh, Lane, Raymond and Hyder Glenn Phillips.
Mrs. Gear was a homemaker. She was a member of Valley Chapel United Methodist Church at Becky’s Creek. She was an active member of Becky’s Creek Womens’ Circle and a former member of Huttonsville/Mill Creek Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Thomas Michael George, 69, a resident of Cassity, passed away Tuesday evening, Dec. 17, 2002, at his home. He had been in declining health for the past 10 months.
He was born May 27, 1933, at Valley Bend, a son of the late Edward and Mabel George.
He was married to Margarete Geneva Shreve George, who survives at Cassity.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael Steven George and wife, Barbara, and Jerry Paul George and wife, Maggie, all of Cassity; two daughters, Mrs. Dale (Anna) Harlan of Jimtown and Mrs. Walter (Jenny) Ice of Charleston; four brothers, Ronald George and Everett George, both of Mabie, Edward "June" George of Cassity and Donald George of Buckhannon; four sisters, Phyllis Zirkle and Harriett "Tippy" Wiseman, both of Mabie, Margaret Johnson, East Lake, Ohio, and Wanda "Jakie" Watson of Southington, Ohio; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.
Also preceding him in death were one sister, Ruby George; and one grandson, Anthony Harlan.
Mr. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army attaining the rank of corporal. He was a coalminer for 40 years prior to his retirement and a member of the Fincham Chapel Church at Adolph.

Dr. John H. Gerath
Dr. John Henry Gerath, 63, of 871 McCanns Run, Jane Lew, died at 10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at his residence.
Dr. Gerath was born Feb. 3, 1939, in Trenton, N.J., a son of the late Frank and Julia Antal Gerath.
On June 19, 1960, in Trenton, N.J., he married Bette Ann Hood, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Melanie Diane Gerath, Betsy Lynn Gerath and Bonnie Jean Garey; a son-in-law, George Garey; a brother, Roger Gerath; a sister, Mary Ann Sisson; a granddaughter, Kimberly Marie Gerath; a grandson, Sebastian Alexander Blinn; and several nieces and nephews.
Dr. Gerath was owner of McCanns Run Chiropractic Clinic since 1983.
He was a 1963 graduate of New York Institute of Chiropractic and a graduate from Shenandoah Valley Academy at New Market, Va.
He practiced in New Jersey from 1971 to 1983 and came to West Virginia where he practiced for 18 years.
He was a member of Buckhannon Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Vernor W. Gerrard
Vernor Webb Gerrard, 89, of Elizabeth Street, Buckhannon, died Monday, Sept., 30, 2002, in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.
Mr. Gerrard was a retired well tender with Hope Natural Gas Co.
He was born in Sardis, June 7, 1913, a son of the late Grover E. and Frances C. Southern Gerrard.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Earldine Scott Gerrard, whom he married Feb. 28, 1942.
Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Tommy (Nancy) Moffett, Wilmington, N.C., and Mrs. Don (Judy) Nestor, Buckhannon; four grandchildren, Shawna Kerekes, Sharece Hendrix, Mendy Nestor and Ryan Nestor; two sisters, Eulah Bray, Fairmont, and Garnett Lynch, Clarksburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Edmond Gerrard.
Mr. Gerrard was a former member of the Sardis Methodist Church and attended Buckhannon First Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart, as well as two bronze stars.

Pansy C. Gibbons
Pansy Catherine Gibbons, 70, a resident of 114 Maple St., Elkins, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 28, 2002, in the Davis Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 1, 1931, at Hendricks, a daughter of the late Pete and Macie Carr.
She was married to William E. Gibbons, who preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1995.
She is survived by one son, William T. Gibbons, of Elkins; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Connie) Milbert of Weirton; one granddaughter, Angie Milbert, of Weirton; two sisters, Betty Kelley and Barbara Harvey, both of Elkins; three brothers, Granville Carr and Gary Carr, both of Elkins, and Paul Carr, of Canton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Deborah Sue Witt of Ohio.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Dale Carr.
Mrs. Gibbons was a former employee of Murphy’s Jewelry Store, Fort Pitt Shoe Store and the Montgomery Ward Catalog Department.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Elkins and the Ladies Guild of the church.
Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. today at the First Church of Christ in Elkins. Funeral services will be held from the church at 2 p.m. today with Evangelist Gary L. Kenneth L. Gibson
Kenneth Larry Gibson, 62, a former resident of Slaty Fork and a resident of Nella’s Nursing Home for the past several years, passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at 5 p.m. at the nursing home. He had been in failing health for the past several years.
Born July 23, 1939, in Slaty Fork, he was a son of the late Odie and Chole Hannah Gibson.
He was united in marriage to the former Delores Currence, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Gibson is survived by four brothers, Don Gibson and wife, Eulah, Arnold Gibson and wife, Judy, Earl Gibson and wife, Connie, and Denney Gibson and wife, Peggy.
He was preceded in death by one brother, one daughter and one sister.
Larry was employed at Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, Md., until being injured and retiring due to disability.
Friends will be received on Sunday after 5 p.m. at F.E. Runner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner Chapel on Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Frank Long, pastor of the Mill Creek Memorial Mission Church, will officiate. Interment will follow at the Gibson Cemetery in Slaty Fork. The F.E. Larry G. Gibson, 58, of Buckhannon, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at his home.
He was born March 16, 1944, a son of the late Gerald Brown Gibson and Goldie Irene Lewis Gibson.
Surviving are six brothers and sisters, Barbara Oldaker of Suffolk, Va., Gary Gibson of Buckhannon, Patty Lemar of New Concord, Ohio, Jim Gibson of Concord, N.C., Ken Gibson of Ohio, and Hilda Halloway of Wisconsin.
He was a painter.

Tim Bruce Gibson, 44, of Spotsylvania, Va., died Friday, May 3, 2002.
He was born Sept. 29, 1957, in Buckhannon, a son of Bruce and Rosie Campbell Gibson.
Also surviving are his life companion Nancy Van Meter; his children, Jennifer, Michelle, Matthew, Nicole and Nancy Gibson, all of Spotsylvania; his stepchildren, Mary Jo and Frank Van Meter; a granddaughter, Alicia Renee Gibson; his step-grandchildren, Mariah, Frank Jr. and Cody Van Meter, all of Spotsylvania; a brother, Mark and his wife, Kathy Gibson of Elyria, Ohio; a sister, Donna and her husband, "Skip" Fair of North Ridgeville, Ohio; a brother, Greg and his wife, Vi Gibson of Buckhannon; a sister, Judy and her husband, Terry Tenney of Buckhannon; many nieces, nephews and friends.
He worked as a mechanic for Loomis Fargo in Alexandria, Va.

Percy L. Gifford
Percy L. Gifford, 65, of Volga, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Mr. Gifford was born Feb. 2, 1937, in Trubie Run, Upshur County, a son of Edith O. Corathers Gifford, who survives in Volga, and the late Corbett S. Gifford.
Surviving are two brothers, Paul Gifford, Hodgesville, and Ernest Gifford, Buckhannon; a sister, Betty Linger, Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Sterling Gifford.
Mr. Gifford was a coal miner and former grounds keeper at Buckhannon Country Club. He was a Baptist by faith.

E. James "Jimmy" Gillespie, 75, of 103 Sycamore St., Webster Springs, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at his residence, following an extended illness.
Mr. Gillespie was born Feb. 15, 1927, in Webster Springs, a son of the late Clarence W. and Bertha Baughman Gillespie.
He was married for 48 years to Nancy Cool Gillespie, who survives in Webster Springs.
Also surviving are two brothers, E. Bernard Gillespie and wife, Aretta, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Dr. David Gillespie, Frostburg, Md.; four sisters, Mrs. Dean (Helen) Hufford, Pulaski, Va., Lucille McCoy, Elyria, Ohio, Mrs. Bob (Sammie) Allman, Buckhannon, and Mrs. Melvin (Caroline) Cochran, Webster Springs; one sister-in-law, Betty McGinty, Clearwater, Fla.; special friends, Rosemary and Jeff Bean and Debbie Blake; and four caregivers, Flecia Brake, Brenda Collins, Lana Cutright and Jamie McIe.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Gillespie and Paul Felix Gillespie; and one sister, Louise Varney.
He was a local retired businessman, owner of Jimmy’s Exxon and E. James Gillespie Fuel Oil Distributors, Cherry Falls, for 33 years. He was a former member of Webster Springs Volunteer Fire Department. He was on the board of directors of Webster County National Bank, a former city councilman, a lifetime member of the WVU Alumni Association and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3738.
He was a former employee of J.C. Baker & Sons and McCourt Motor Co.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the USS Tennessee and was in the Battle of Iwo Jima 3-16/19-1945 and Okinawa 3-26-1945.
He attended the Church of Christ in Webster Springs.

Christopher Galen Gilmore, 19, a resident of Clendenin, passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He is survived by his father Richard Gilmore and stepmother, Anita, of Charleston; his mother, Tammy Powers and stepfather, Junior, of Clendenin; three brothers, Cory Gilmore and Cole Powers, both of Clendenin, and Michael Totten of Charleston; one sister, Mallory Gilmore of Clendenin; and his paternal grandparents, Galen and Jerry Gilmore of Mill Creek.
Also preceding him in death were grandparents, Doris Jones of Elkview, and John Tincher of Chelyan.
He attended Herbert Hoover High School at Clendenin.

Caroline Elizabeth Ginger, 94, a resident of Baltimore, Md., passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 1, 2002, in Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
She was born June 27, 1908, at Marlinton, a daughter of the late John M. and Lucy Ellen Pritt Jackson.
She was married to Roy W. Ginger, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by three sons, Dempsey W. Ginger of Elkins, Randolph L. Ginger of Belington, and Franklin D. "Frank" Ginger of Elkton, Md.; and four daughters, Mary M. McMannes of Mather, Pa., Ellen Jean Buckheit of Baltimore, Md., Betty E. Timmons of Glen Burnie, Md., and Susan L. Finch of Yuma, Ariz. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were one son, Robert L. Ginger; one daughter, Lillian Mae Ginger; three brothers, Paul and Norman Jackson and John Blackburn; and one sister, Martha Brock.
Mrs. Ginger was retired from Davis Memorial Hospital. She was awarded a Gold Star from the United States Government for having lost a son in the Korean War. She attended the former Evangelical United Brethren Church of Elkins.

Olive A. Godfrey, 93, of 233 Randolph St., Buckhannon, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in Nella’s Nursing Home in Crystal Springs.
Mrs. Godfrey was born Aug. 21, 1908, in Braxton County, a daughter of the late Charles and Alice Evans McNemar.
On July 10, 1927, she married Dorsey P. Godfrey, who preceded her in death on July 3, 1985.
Surviving are one son, Kennard Godfrey, Pentress; one sister, Wanda M. Thompson, Buckhannon; seven grandsons, Kenny Godfrey, Pentress, Allen Godfrey, Jack Godfrey, West Mifflin, Pa., Edward Godfrey, Buckhannon, Richard Godfrey, Palm Bay, Fla., David Carpenter, Grafton, and Ronald Carpenter, Bridgeport; 15 grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Leaseburge and Mary Robinson; and five brothers, Guy McNemar, Earl McNemar, Lawrence McNemar, Dorsey McNemar and Harvey McNemar.
Mrs. Godfrey was manager at Colonial Theater. She was a Methodist by faith.

Jacob B. Godwin
Jacob Brooks Godwin, 83, a resident of the Kerens Community, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at 3:26 p.m. at his residence. He had been in failing health; however, death was sudden and unexpected.
He was born Sept. 6, 1919, at Fairmont, a son of the late Joseph and Ina Nestor Godwin.
On Jan. 21, 1986, he was united in marriage to the former Martha Ann Ware, who survives at Kerens.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Joyce Pritt and husband, Bob, of the Cravensdale Community; one stepdaughter, Martha Wood and husband, John, of Kerens; three sons, Carl J. Godwin of Norton, Mark Godwin and Jake Godwin, both of Kerens; four sisters, Mae Streets of Thomas, Sylvia Summerfield of Parsons, Edith Nestor of Montrose, and Dolly Summerfield of Parsons; one brother, Dennis Godwin of St. George; one grandson, Michael Pritt; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death was a sister, Ruth Bohon; and one half brother, Alva Shahan.
Mr. Godwin was last employed for Bob Phillips as a mobile home mover until retiring in the 1980s. He was formerly employed in the shipyards in Baltimore, Md. and had also been a coal miner. Several years ago he worked for Montgomery Ward’s as a carpenter. He loved to spend time going to auctions and was a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received at F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel Sunday after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted from the Runner chapel Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. A.H. Leonard Lee Goff
Leonard Lee Goff, 78, a former resident of Kerens for several years, passed away at 3:27 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at his residence in Montrose, where he made his home with Ed and Margaret Slaubaugh. He had been in declining health for the past several months.
Born May 7, 1924, at Kerens, he was the son of the late Lewis and Daisy Hammond Goff.
He had never married and was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie and Mary Frances; five brothers, Perry, Jasper, Paul, Emmett and Henry Goff; and two infant siblings.
Leonard is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Mr. Goff hauled wood and coal for many years and was also a farmer and logger. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a Baptist by faith.
Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday after 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the Runner Chapel on Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Sterling E. Goff
Sterling E. Goff, 79, of 1899 W. Garfield Road and formerly of Warren, Ohio, died at 7:50 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2002, at St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center in Columbiana, Ohio.
He was born April 18, 1922, in Mabie, a son of Everret and Bertha Rowan Goff.
Mr. Goff retired in 1982 from ITT Grinnell Co., after working 30 years and had also worked in the coal mines in West Virginia and at Liberty Steel.
He was a founding member and usher at St. Pius X Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Men’s Club.
He enjoyed polka dancing, hunting and camping.
His wife, Patricia Volitis Goff, whom he married on Aug. 25, 1941, preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 1981.
Survivors include one son, Francis "Ed" of Champion, Ohio; one daughter, Mary Ann Stocker of Oregon; three brothers, Clyde of Vienna, Ohio, Kenny of Belington, and Lewis Earl of Ellamore; one sister, Marie Temple of Elyria, Ohio; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandson and two brothers, Robert and James.

Arthur Gooden
Arthur "Dutch" Gooden, 97, a resident of Valley Bend, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Civista Hospital in LaPlata, Md.
He was born born Jan. 28, 1905, at Adolph, a son of the late John Gooden and Lena Iseli Gooden Holt.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Clara Duffell Gooden, three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by three daughters, Alice Van Quacthem, of Centralia, Wash., Iris Noel of San Antonio, Texas, and Patsy Forinash of Hughesville, Md.; one son, Pete Gooden of Pratt; two sisters, Genievieve Adamovich, Dearborn, Mich., Mabel Boone, Ravenswood; and one brother, Earl Holt, Billings, Montana. Fourteen grandchildren 12 great-grandchildren also survive.
As a young man, Mr. Gooden worked with his stepfather cooking in lumber camps throughout West Virginia. He worked for DuPont in Waynesboro, Va., and he also worked as the head cook at the Huttonsville Correctional Center and a cook for the Western Maryland Railroad prior to his retirement in 1970. He also served as a deputy sheriff in Randolph County and worked for a few years with the W.Va. Department of Highways. He was very active in Randolph Lodge No. 55 AF & AM of Beverly where he received his 50-year pin in 2000. He attained the 32nd degree in both the York and Scottish Rite. He enjoyed camping, hunting, trout fishing and attended the Valley Bend United Methodist Church.

Carl Lee Goodwin, 69, of Route 4, Box 644, Buckhannon, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at his home in Buckhannon.
Mr. Goodwin was born May 22, 1933, in Ellamore, a son of the late Charles L. and Martha Shreve Goodwin.
On June 5, 1955, he married Ima Jean Ratliff Goodwin, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are four sons, Carl L. Goodwin Jr., Buckhannon, Charles Neal Goodwin, Clarksburg, Douglas A. Goodwin, Morgantown, and Kevin M. Goodwin, Buckhannon; one brother, Rev. Sherman Goodwin, Stonewood; four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Eileen) Casto, Volga, Mrs. Darrell (Betty) Waugh, Clarksburg, Mrs. John (Maxine) Lee, Gaines, and Mrs. Arnold (Marjorie) Chewning, Teter; two grandsons, Christopher S. Goodwin and Bradley L. Goodwin, both of Buckhannon; one granddaughter, Natasha E. Goodwin, Morgantown; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Goodwin was a department supervisor for Corhart Refractories. He served in the National Guard. He was a member of the Tennerton Lions Club and a member of Sand Run Baptist Church.

Mary B. Goodwin, 100, of 127 Railroad Ave., Buckhannon, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Bailey’s Private Care in Buckhannon.
She was born Jan. 11, 1902, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late late Lloyd and Lucy Riggs Miller.
She married Coleman Goodwin, who preceded her in death on July 5, 1978.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley Sands, Buckhannon; four sons, Gerald Goodwin, Baden, Pa., Jimmie Goodwin, Fair Oaks, Pa., Murle Gene Goodwin, Corapolis, Pa., and Kenneth Goodwin, Texas; one brother, Evid Miller, Hampton; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Wanda Huff and Wilda Sutton; five brothers, Curtis Miller, Delbert Miller, Ray Miller, Roy Miller and William Miller; and one sister, Flo Miller.
Mrs. Goodwin was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.

Thomas Goodwin II
Thomas Martin Goodwin II, 68, of New Bern, N.C., and Elkins, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at New Bern, N.C.
Mr. Goodwin was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Elkins, a son of the late Dr. Thomas M. Goodwin and Arlene Stickles Goodwin.
He was married to June Shimer Goodwin, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Alan Scott of New Bern, N.C.; one daughter, Sara Goodwin Hatley and husband, William; three sisters, Linda Phares, Philadelphia, Pa., Deborah Craddock of Virginia Beach, and Mary K. Coontz of Beverly; four grandchildren, Sierra and Samuel Hatley and Brandon and Logan Goodwin; and 31 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, David; one sister, Barbara Carrico; and his stepmother, Kathryn Kee.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a flight test engineer for Avionics Specialties in Charlottesville, Va., until his retirement.
He was always a kid at heart. He helped start the Northside baseball little league and was a starter for Fairview swim team long after his children graduated.

Gladys Wyatt Gordon, 95, a former resident of 1520 Harrison Ave. and for the past two years a resident of Nella’s Nursing Home at Crystal Springs, departed this life at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health for the past two years since suffering a broken hip.
She was born July 29, 1906, at Lower Cheat, a daughter of the late French C. Wyatt and Mary Bowman Wyatt.
On July 3, 1926, at Barbour County, she was married to L. Ellis Gordon, who preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1997.
Surviving are one daughter-in-law, Kathryn Switz Gordon, Princeton, N.J.; one niece, Mary Jo Ferguson, California; four grandchildren, Marion Gerecke, Donna Lynn Shea, Kathy Jo Brigman and William Gordon; and six great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her son, William F. Gordon; and one sister, Inez Nolte.
Mrs. Gordon attended the schools of Randolph County and was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Aerie No. 2344, Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, a member of the Tygart’s Valley Post No. 3647, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, and the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center.

Albert L. Gotthardt
Albert L. "Little Papa" Gotthardt, 76, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and formerly of Lower Cheat, Elkins, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in Baptist Hospital, Pensacola, Fla., where he had been a patient for a month. Death was attributed to cancer.
Mr. Gotthardt was born April 9, 1925, in Boston, Mass., a son of the late Joshua and Celica Gotthardt.
He married Betty Gotthardt, who preceded him in death
Surviving are two sons, Charles Collins and wife, Quintina, Pensacola, Fla., and Earl Collins, Reinholds, Pa.; a brother, Ernie Gotthardt and wife, Chau, San Francisco, Calif.; a sister, Sandra Koltz and husband, Barry, Delray Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kristina Collins, Ruther Glenn, Va., Ashley Collins, Kenneth Collins, Taylor Collins and Charles Collins Jr., all of Pensacola, Fla.
Mr. Gotthardt attended the Boston public schools and was a graduate of the College of Engineering of Northeastern University in 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from the Naval Research Laboratory on Aug. 26, 1978, after 33 years of federal service.
Among his accomplishments during retirement was founding the TBT, a small group of computer and high-tech enthusiasts who pooled their resources use their best assets and equipment. He served as president and chief executive officer of TBT.
He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Mr. Gotthardt was cremated. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a local Alcoholics Anonymous group.

Ivan D. Greathouse
Ivan Dale Greathouse, 61, of Durbin, passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002.
Mr. Greathouse was born April 13, 1941, at Durbin, to Ella L. Morgan Greathouse and the late Ivan Door Greathouse.
Mr. Greathouse was an avid deer and bear hunter. He was a laborer for Howe’s Leather Co., a truck driver for Grimes Logging Co., Burford Coal Co. and was a heavy equipment operator for numerous companies. He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church on Back Mountain, a member of the National Rifleman Association and the West Virginia Bear Hunters Association.
He was married to Frances Greathouse, who survives in Durbin.
In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by three sons, Kevin Greathouse and wife, Sharon, Carl Greathouse and wife, Regina, and Donald Greathouse and wife, Wanda, all of Durbin; one sister, Donna Hommema of Elkins; three grandchildren, Fallon, Jenna and Jordan Greathouse; two stepgrandchildren, Wesley and Josh Lambert; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara E. Green, 70, of Route 1, Box 69 BB, Volga, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at her home in Volga.
Mrs. Green was born June 28, 1931, in Gilmer County, a daughter of Lucy Canter Wilmoth, who survives in Volga, and the late William Wilmoth.
In 1958, she married Frank Green, who preceded her in death in 1972.
Also surviving are one son, William Green, Volga; one daughter, Kathy Jenkins, Hackers Creek; one sister, Wilma Ellison, Volga; and four grandsons, Billy Green, Fairmont, Bobby Green, Volga, and Lucas Jenkins and Shane Jenkins, both of Hackers Creek.
She was preceded in death by one son, David Green; and one brother, Orville Wilmoth.

Alberta Strader Greene, 86, a resident of Philippi, passed away at 7:05 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2002, at her residence following an extended illness while under the care of Mountain Hospice and many loving care givers.
She was born Dec. 11, 1915, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Monzel M. and Martha Dyer Strader.
She was united in marriage on May 29, 1943, to James P. Greene, who preceded her in death on July 28, 1999.
She is survived by one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Skip Inskip, Atlanta, Ga.; one niece and two nephews, one being Pastor Fred Holbrook and wife, Shirley, Carlisle, Ohio.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one sister, Rosa Lee S. Brower; and one brother, James Edwin Strader.
She was a 1939 graduate of West Virginia University. She served as personal director in Huntington for Owens-Illinois Glass Co. She operated the Strader’s Insurance and Real Estate Business from 1959 to 1976. She owned and operated Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery from 1959 until the late 1970s. She was a member of the Arktaean Club, Barbour County Club and Chapter 41 Order Eastern Star. She was a member of the Crim Memorial United Methodist Church.

She was married to Cecil B. Gregory, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Harley B. and Arlene Gregory of Ohio; four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and one brother, Glen Fleming of Florida.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Gladys Sharp; and one brother, Hubbard Fleming.
Mrs. Gregory was a member of the Eden United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received at Robert M. Vincent Funeral Home, French Creek Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Godwin officiating at Eden United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Goshen Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from noon to 1 p.m., the funeral hour. From 5 Mar 2002

Robert L. Gribble
Robert Lee Gribble, 69, of 260 Fern Forest Court, Fort Mill, S.C., died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at his home.
He was born Sept. 14, 1932, in Philippi, a son of the late William Edward Gribble and Elizabeth Nester Gribble.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche Nicholas McNutt Gribble; four sons, Randy Gribble of Tega Cay, S.C., Frank McNutt and Dale McNutt, both of Canton, Ohio, and Roger McNutt of Fort Mill, S.C.; four daughters, Anna Query and Cindy Roberts, both of Fort Mill, S.C., Pamela Osborne of Canton, Ohio, and Denise Gribble of Clover, S.C.; two sisters, Ann Humphrey and Martha Adams, both of Nestorville; 26 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Bonnie May Blackburn.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Wolfe Funeral Home, 314 Spratt St., Fort Mill, S.C. and other times at home, 260 Fern Forest Court, Fort Mill, S.C. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. at Sisk Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. George Dye officiating. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at the Salvation Army in Canton, Ohio, with the Majors James and Blanche Reynolds officiating at 6 p.m.

Bernice D. Griffith
Bernice Day Griffith, 77, a resident of the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center in Belington, died at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 in Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins. She had been in failing health for the past several years.
She was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Clark and Fannie Frances Day.
On March 28, 1934, she married James Harvey Griffith, who preceded her in death Aug. 8, 1994.
Surviving are one son, James Robert "Sonny" Griffith, Thornton; two daughters, Betty Lou Ryan and husband, Butch, Belington, and Janet D’Allesandro, Portsmouth, Va.; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by all of her siblings, being the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Griffith attended the schools of Upshur County, was a homemaker and owner-operator of the Cotton Bowl in Belington for many years.
She was a member of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Meadowville.
Private family funeral services were held Feb. 9 from the Talbott Funeral Home in Belington. Interment followed in the Concord Cemetery near Belington.

Carolyn S. Griffith
Carolyn Sue Griffith, 53, a resident of Philippi, went to be with her Lord at 12:20 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, following a 16- month illness.
She was born Feb. 9, 1949, in Elkins, a daughter of the late William E. and Helen Raines Watson.
On Jan. 9, 1967, she was united in marriage to Delbert L. Griffith, who survives at Philippi.
Also surviving are one daughter, Tina Revis and husband, James, Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Anthony Griffith and Dwayne Griffith and wife, Jessica, all of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren, La’Kisha, Jeremy, Dwayne Jr., Louie, Daniel, Samantha, Alyssa and Dustin; two sisters, Roselind Arbogast of Belington, and Willa Scott of Elkins; four brothers, William Watson Jr., Huntington, Steven Watson, Philippi, David Watson of Belington and Michael Watson of Huntington; close friends, Dave and Janet Belt; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Griffith was a homemaker and attended the Cathedral of Deliverance Church.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. A.H. Belt officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. From 9 Oct 2002.

Merle L. Grogg
Merle L. Grogg, 72, of Randolph, Ohio, passed away, Wednesday, May 22, 2002.
He was born March 25, 1930, at Green Bank.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Shirley Ann Grogg; an infant daughter, five brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his daughter, Amy Grogg; three brothers, Ray Grogg, Donald Grogg and Forrest Grogg Jr. and wife, Helen; four sisters, Martha Foster and husband Bob Sr.; Dortha Shrader, Betty Ware and Ruth Ann Mullenax; and two grandsons, James Porter and T.J. Conway.
Services will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale with the Rev. David Rittenhouse officiating. Interment will follow at Arbovale Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rolling Acres Alliance Church in memory of Merle. From 25 May 2002.

Wilbur E. Grose
Wilbur Earl Grose, 85, of Route 2, Box 199, French Creek, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in Arbors of Fairmont in Fairmont.
Mr. Grose was born Dec. 16, 1916, in Sago, a son of the late Willie Wilbur and Iva Ours Grose.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ford (Ruth) Boyles and Mrs. Virgil (Nancy) Greenleaf, all of French Creek; and 10 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Curtis Grose; and a sister, Sarah Mildred Grose.
Mr. Grose was a farmer. He served in the U.S. Army with the 926th Signal Battalion, serving in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a member of Buckhannon VFW Post 3663 and Frank B. Bartlett Post 7, American Legion.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Noel C. Gross
Noel Calvin Gross, 62, of Beverly, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 19, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Gross was born Sept. 12, 1939, in New Lexington, Ohio, a son of the late Sherman Franklin and Blanche Marie Gross.
He had never married.
Surviving are two sisters, Caroline Summerfield, Beverly, with whom he made his home, and Shirley Wilson, Belington; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Mr. Gross was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Elkins.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends may call at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins Thursday from noon until 1 p.m., the funeral hour, with the Rev. Vernard Tasker and B.R. Waybright officiating. Everett H. Groves
Everett Hugh "Bud" Groves, 74, of Rainelle, passed away peacefully at Heartland of Rainelle Tuesday, March 26, 2002, following a long illness.
Mr. Groves was born Aug. 15, 1927, at Albright, in Preston County, a son of the late Cloyd D. and Nettie F. Martin Groves.
He was married to Doris C. Shafer Groves, who survives at Rainelle.
Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara Bruce of Farmington, Va., and Sue Ann Adkins of Huntington; one son, Rusty Groves of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Betty Sutton of Elkins, and Sibby Boothe of Elkhart, Ind.; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one stepdaughter, Marsha Mead of Bluefield, Va.; two stepsons, Eddie Adkins of Washington, D.C., and Mark Adkins of Fayetteville; five stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
He served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Westmoreland Coal Co. in 1985. He was a former member of Quinwood Baptist Church and Quinwood Fire Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Rainelle where he served as custodian and on the board of ushers.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Rainelle with Pastor Dana Gatewood and the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Church members will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville. The Groves family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services. Tommy W. Gum
Tommy Wayne Gum, 29, of 19 Locust Drive, Buckhannon, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at his home in Buckhannon.
He was born Nov. 18, 1972, in Webster Springs, a son of Shirley Lough McQuain, who survives at Williamstown, and the late Johnny Gum.
On Dec. 27, 1990, he married Linda Godfrey Gum, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Chelsea Gum, Buckhannon; one brother, Johnny Gum, Buckhannon; five sisters, Kathy Hardesty, Frametown, Connie Gibson, Marietta, Ohio, Donna Marks, Buckhannon, Bonnie Postelwait, Baltimore, Md., and Shirley Mollohan, Marietta, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a plant manager for J.G. Enterprises.
Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home today from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Friday at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Rock Cave Cemetery at Rock Cave. From 8 Aug 2002.

Ronald L. Gutmann, 73, a resident of the Chenoweth Creek Road community, Elkins, departed this life Monday morning, July 22, 2002, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown.

Ronald L. Gutmann
Ronald Ludwig Gutmann, 73, a resident of the Chenoweth Creek Road community, Elkins, departed this life Monday morning, July 22, 2002, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born March 17, 1929, at Elizabeth, N.J., a son of the late Richard T. Gutmann and Ethel Mary Lesin Gutmann.
On May 30, 1958, at Parsons, he was married to the former Dixie Lee Goff, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Ronald Ludwig "Chip" Gutmann II, Raleigh, N.C.; one daughter, Erica Lee "Rikki" Mowen and husband, David, Grasonville, Md.; one sister-in-law, Helen Gutmann, Falls Church, Va.; his mother-in-law, Vallie Cosner Goff, Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by one brother, Richard W. Gutmann; and one sister, Alice Vanderstreet.
Mr. Gutmann was a graduate of Kennelworth High School at New Jersey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a 1956 graduate of Rutgers University with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration. He had worked as assistant director of the Social Security and Insurance Department for the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce at Newark, N.J., as the secretary and treasurer of the former Dorman Mills at Parsons, as commercial superintendent for Sherbo Minerals Limited at Sierra Leone, West Africa, as shopping center manager at Baltimore, Md., and had worked as controller and acting manager of the Laboratory Furniture, Labcraft Division at Beverly, until his retirement in 1976, due to a disability. He was instrumental in the organization and development of the Holly Meadows Country Club and the development of the Kingsford Charcoal Plant. He had served two terms on the Parsons City Council. He was a member of the Elkins Lodge No. 1135, BPOE and the American Red Cross, where he had served as county chairman for two years. He was an avid golfer and salt water fisherman.
Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. On Friday morning, Mr. Gutmann will be moved to the First United Methodist Church, where final rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and the Rev. Jonas Johnson Jr. will officiate and cremation will follow. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, W.Va. 26241. From 24 July 2002.
