John W. "Duke" Edgell
By JUDITH STUTLER, Staff Writer
Elkins residents today are mourning the loss of John W. "Duke" Edgell, who died at 9:45 a.m. Friday at Davis Memorial Hospital.
Edgell, who served the community in numerous capacities throughout his 82 years, suffered a heart attack on Sept. 2 and death was attributed to cardiac arrest, according to Edgell’s son, Wally Edgell.
While his health had been failing in recent years, Edgell, through his family, continued his community efforts. The most recent example was the donation of an extensive collection of more than 4,000 political items, especially political buttons, to Elkins High School as the Duke and Edith Edgell Collection.
Wally Edgell said the collection is the largest political item collection in the United States in a school. "He always wanted to make sure after he was gone it would continue," the son said.
He said his father and mother were in charge of the Methodist Youth Fellowship at First United Methodist Church for 10 to 12 years, "all the time us kids were growing up."
Twenty-six years ago Edgell helped found the Randolph County Classic Golf Tournament.
Bill Clark of Clark’s Tax Service in Elkins knew Edgell since the mid-1960s. "He was very loyal to the Elks Lodge and golf course and was an avid golfer," Clark said. "Thirty years ago he and his wife, Edith, managed the Pro Shop.
"He was of extremely good character and was very sincere about everything he got involved in," Clark said. "He was very loyal and proud of his children."
Linda Ferguson, a friend and clerk at the Coming Around Again consignment shop, said the Edgells were "like young people in love all of their lives."
"He’d say she didn’t have to work because he’d made the living because she made living worthwhile," Ferguson said. "He was a very quality person."
Edgell was perhaps best known for the many programs he helped implement at the Elkins/Randolph County Family YMCA, including the YMCA Church Basketball League that started in the early 1960s and the Jerry West Basketball League that began in the 1970s.
A member of the YMCA board for 25 years, Edgell was "quite a character and was very well loved," according to YMCA Director Jill Stalnaker.
"He was always a big supporter of youth and youth memberships and scholarship drives," Stalnaker said. "He encouraged people in the community to volunteer for these kids.
"He would round up sponsors to pay for the leagues and raised money from concessions stands and car washes — anything they could to raise money for kids.
"He was a selfless man," the YMCA director said. "I can’t say enough good things about him. He was like a family member to me — just wonderful."
Stalnaker said when she joined the YMCA’s staff, she went to Edgell, then a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, for advice on running the facility.
Even while in a nursing home, Edgell thought about ideas on how to financially help the "Y," and came up with the idea to have a golf tournament. The tournament, known over the past five years as the Duke Open, raised close to $20,000, all of which goes toward youth programming at the YMCA. "He was loved and that well known, and it made it one of the biggest golf tournaments the Elks Club has ever seen," Stalnaker said.
Edgell, a former resident of Riverview Drive and a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center since January of 1995, had been in declining health for the past 11 years.
He was born June 8, 1920, at Smithfield, a son of the late Homer Edgell and Effie Henderson Edgell.
On Aug. 30, 1942, at Baltimore, Md., he was married to the former Edith Hostutler, who preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 1998.
Surviving are three sons, Gary Edgell and wife, Karen, of Charleston, Sen. Larry Edgell and wife, Ceci, of New Martinsville, and Dr. Wally Edgell, Elkins; one daughter, Judith Hall and husband, Bruce, Martinsburg; one sister, First Lt. Mary Jo Brady of Buckhannon; seven grandchildren, Brian, John Bradley, Eva, Jeremy, Joshua and Jenny Edgell and Aaron Lee Dean; and five great-grandchildren, Rachel, Zachary and Joshua Edgell and Dillon and Victoria Dean.
Preceding him in death was one brother, Max Edgell; and two sisters, Edith and Florence.
He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1939 and attended West Virginia University. He was an electrical engineer for the Monongahela Power Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1982.
In addition to his 25 years on the board of directors of the YMCA, Edgell, in 1999, received the distinction of being named board of director emeritus of the YMCA. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1135 BPOE, and in the year 2000 was awarded life membership of the Elks Lodge. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins.
Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Today, at 7 p.m. the Elks Lodge 1135, BPOE, will hold a memorial service. Conley will officiate and interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
