Opal F. Cadle
Opal Faye Cadle, 77, of East Dailey, died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health for several years and seriously ill for the past three weeks.
Mrs. Cadle was born May 5, 1924, in Webster Springs, a daughter of the late Heaston and Ada Cogar Dodrill.
On Dec. 26, 1941, in Webster Springs, she married Orvie H. Cadle, who preceded her in death in 1977.
Surviving are six sons, Herbert Cadle, East Dailey, Hubert Cadle and wife, Judy, and Donald Cadle and wife, Rosalie, all of Bumpass, Va., Paul Cadle and wife, Kay, Beverly, Charles Cadle and wife, Debbie, Sweetland, and Roy Cadle and wife, Mary, Cleveland, Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. George (Betty) Scott, Buckhannon, Mrs. Daryl (Brenda) Blankenship, Elkins, Mrs. Ray (Debbie) Nichols, Summersville, and Mrs. Ray (Sybil) Bartley, Bumpass, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Goldie) Hamrick, Bergoo, and Mae Wyatt, Summersville; a brother, Roy Dodrill, Camden-on-Gauley; 17 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter and a grandson.
Mrs. Cadle was a homemaker. She was employed as a baker for Ye Olde Donut Shoppe for several years.
She was a Baptist by faith.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends may call at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Frank Long officiating. Interment will follow in Little Arlington Cemetery near Elkins. From 24 Jan 2002

Woodrow W. Calain
Woodrow W. Calain, 85, a former resident of Bowden, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in the United States Soldier’s and Airmen’s Home in Washington, D.C.
He was born March 22, 1917, in Bowden, a son of the late J.W. "Bill" Calain and the late Beulah Dove Calain.
He had never married.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. William (Eleanor) Tolbard, Frederick, Md.; one brother-in-law, Herman "Peck" Vance of Bowden; one sister-in-law, Ethel Calain of Bowden; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Virginia Phares, Betty Riggleman and Ruby Vance; and two brothers, H.O. "Mac" Calain and Russell Calain.
Mr. Calain was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1935 until 1937 in Northern France and from 1939 until 1945 in the 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He received numerous decorations including Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, the African, Middle Eastern and European Service Medals and four Bronze Stars. He was an avid traveler visiting almost every state in the nation.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Arlington National Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded and interment will follow. This announcement is a courtesy of Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. From 25 June 2002.

Curtis F. Calhoun
Curtis Ford Calhoun, 90, of Petersburg, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Grant County Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since April 10, 2000.
Mr. Calhoun was born Sept. 23, 1911, in Brushy Run, a son of the late Martin Dow Calhoun and Rachel Ann Graham Calhoun.
He was twice married. First, he married Ruby Cowger Calhoun, who preceded him in death in 1977. Second, on June 26, 1985, he married Doris M. Carbaugh Calhoun, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Marlin W. Calhoun and wife, Ada, Cleveland, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Judy A. Reedy and husband, Hurley, Moorefield; three sisters, Kate Alt, Landes, Lillian Miller, Harrisonburg, Va., and Bessie Hevener, Mt. Crawford, Va.; two brothers, Olin Calhoun and Quentin Calhoun, Upper Tract; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a stepgranddaughter, Debra Ann Reedy; four brothers, Isaac Scott Calhoun, Elbridge I. Calhoun, Otha Carl Calhoun and Verlie Don Calhoun; and two sisters, Lydia Mabel Calhoun and Vernie Riggleman.
Mr. Calhoun retired in 1976 from the Frank Wilson Lumber Co. in Elkins.
He was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church.

James W. Califf Sr.
James W. Califf Sr., 85, of 204 S. Main St., Philippi, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at his residence
He was born Aug. 3, 1916, in Barberton, Ohio, a son of the late Jack and Reta Pitts Califf.
He was united in marriage to the former Edith Patricia McCoy, who preceded him in death.
Also surviving are three sons and one daughter-in-law, John A. Califf and wife, Judy, Philippi, David W. Califf, Pennsylvania, and Robert P. Califf, Philippi; and two grandsons, David Califf and Christopher Califf.
He was preceded in death by one son, James W. Califf Jr.
He was raised in Clarksburg and Philippi. He graduated from Philippi High School in 1934, during which time he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Virginia Military Institute.
He served his country during World War II, serving in the U.S. 5th Army, 938th field artillery, under Gen. Mark Clark during the campaigns in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He received the Purple Hart for combat wounds while in Italy.
He was employed by McCoy Brothers Inc. and with West Virginia Department of Natural Resources for many years as a reclamation specialist until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of VFW Post 3560, American Legion Post 29 and BPOE Lodge 308. He was given the honorary award of Kentucky Colonel by the governor of Kentucky.
He loved fishing, hunting and golfing with his friends.

Ada G. Campbell
Ada G. Campbell, 81, of Philippi, died Thursday morning, Aug. 1, 2002, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 31, 1920, at Elkins, Randolph County, a daughter of the late Loyd D. and Mary Myrtle Miller Moats.
On June 21, 1943, she was married to Dorsey B. Campbell, who preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1989.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma Jean and Charles "Chuck" Zandarski, Dowell, Md., and Ellen Kay and Gary Hartsog, Beckley; four grandchildren, Sonia K. Vowls, Wilmington, N.C., Stephanie R. Hartsog, Tesla M. Hartsog and Travis M. Hartsog, all of Beckley; one brother, Ary "Bus" Moats and wife, Jean, Laurel, Md.; one sister, Myrtle "Betty" Everson and husband, Hobart, Hot Springs, Ark.; her constant canine companion, "Buttons" and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Ware Galonis, Opal Haddix and Yvonne Ruth Catlett; and two brothers, William Howard Moats and Harry C. "Bill" Moats.
Mrs. Moats was a homemaker and was a former employee of the Broaddus Hospital during World War II. She was employed at Glenn L. Martin Aviation in Baltimore, Md. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church but had attended the Philippi United Methodist Church for the past 30 years. She was a member of the Barbour County CEO, the Silent Grove CEO, the Barbour County Senior Citizens Center and the Covered Bridge Quilters Club.
The family will receive friends at Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday and from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Monday, when funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Lejeune Lewis and the Rev. Jerry Boyce officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. From 3 and 5 Aug 2002.

George W. Campbell
George Winters "Wint" Campbell, 102, of Route 1, Box 202, French Creek, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at his home in French Creek.
He was born July 16, 1900, at Pocahontas County, a son of the late Andy and Dicie Dawson Campbell.
He married Anna Werner Campbell, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Carl Campbell, Ellamore, and Clyde Campbell, French Creek; one brother, Carus Campbell, Buckhannon; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Jim Campbell and Glenn David Campbell; five brothers, Elmer Campbell, Wilson Campbell, Bill Campbell, Howard Campbell and Sterline Campbell; and two sisters, Eva Hischoff and Mae Anderson.
He was a game warden and also worked in the shipyard in Ambridge, Pa. He was a lifetime member of the Stonecoal Fishing Club and a member of the Turkey Hunters Hall of Fame.
Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. with Pastor David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery. From 20 Sep 2002.

Hazel A. Campbell
Hazel A. Campbell, 85, of 805 Twp. Rd. 1600, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at her residence.
She was born March 15, 1917, in Elkins, a daughter of Arthur and Ada V. Weese Louk.
She moved to Ashland in 1953 from Elkins.
She had been employed at the Ashland Times Gazette as an advertising inserter retiring in 1980.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jo Biddinger of Ashland, Ohio, Jeanette and Harry Cutlip of Fairmont, and Betty and Bob Stine of Ashland, Ohio; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Herbert D. and Norma Campbell of Macedonia, Ohio, Jerry R. Campbell, Charles Ernie Campbell, David A. and Doris Campbell and John S. Campbell, all of Ashland, Ohio; nine grandchildren, one stepgrandchild, 10 great-grandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Ocie Collett of North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, one sister and one granddaughter, Karolee A. Campbell Bottorff on Feb. 21, 2002.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home with the Rev. Norm Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the Ashland County Memorial Park. Jean D. Campbell
Jean Daniels Campbell, 73, a resident of Akron, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, in Akron City Hospital.
She was born March 29, 1929, at Beverly, the daughter of the late R.W. "Bud" Daniels and the late Cleona Mae Butcher Daniels.
She was married to Waldo "Walt" Campbell, who survives in Akron.
Also surviving are one son, Joseph Michael Keller, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two stepsons, Thomas Campbell, Denver, Colo., and Bruce Campbell, California; four stepdaughters, Sister Bonnie Campbell, Louisiana, Marsha of Grand Forks, N.D., and Kathy and Becky of Akron, Ohio; three brothers, F.W. "Bud" Daniels, Akron, Ohio, Harry Daniels and Carl Daniels, both of Beverly; three sisters, Pauline Edwards, Akron, Ohio, Dora Newlon, Elkins, and Connie Pingley, Beverly; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Casandra; five stepgrandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Dempsey, Coy and Ralph "Smokie" Daniels.
Mrs. Campbell was a homemaker and a member of St. Mathews Church in Akron, Ohio.

John W. Campbell
John Wilson Campbell, 90, a resident of Route 6, Buckhannon, the Tennerton community, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Holbrook Nursing Home.
He was born March 21, 1912, in Pocahontas County, the son of the late James A. and Dicey B. Dawson Campbell.
On April 25, 1936, he was married to Verma Tenney Campbell, who survives.
Surviving are two sons, Steven Campbell, Hixson, Tenn., and Mike Campbell, Parkersburg; four grandchildren, Jonathon, Andrew, Alex and Evan; and two brothers, Winters Campbell, Rock Cave, and Carus Campbell, Buckhannon.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mae Anderson and Eva Bischoff; and four brothers, Elmer, Bill, Sterling and Howard Campbell.
Mr. Campbell was a 50-year member of the Buckhannon Church of Christ and had been employed at West Virginia Wesleyan College and the West Virginia Department of Highways.
Mr. Campbell was an avid outdoorsman and loved gardening.

Lorraine Campbell
Lorraine Campbell, 83, a resident of Route 1, (City Restaurant Trailer Park), Philippi, passed away at 5:25 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
She was born Jan. 23, 1919, at Philippi, a daughter of the late Alice Mae Williams.
She was united in marriage to Orville Campbell, who preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1978.
Surviving are several cousins.
She was a homemaker. She was a former member of the Philippi Senior Citizens. In her earlier years she attended the former Mt. Heborn United Methodist Church, later she attended the Mansfield United Methodist Church.

Nona G. Campbell
Nona G. Campbell, 91, of Buckhannon, the Hall Road, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Lynchburg, Va.
Mrs. Campbell was born July 5, 1910, in Richwood, a daughter of the late Robert and Nora Perkins Johnson.
On July 4, 1930, she married Harold B. Campbell, who survives in Buckhannon.
Also surviving are one daughter, Jo Ann West, Madison Heights, Va.; two sons, Marvin Campbell, Plymouth, N.C., and Eugene Campbell, Cincinnati, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Campbell; three brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Campbell was a homemaker and a member of Buckhannon Church of the Nazarene of Buckhannon.

Roy L. Campbell
Roy Lee Campbell, 70, of Shenandoah, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at his home.
Mr. Campbell was born Jan. 1, 1932, in Shenandoah, Va., a son of the late Jesse William and Mamie Virginia Breeden Campbell Sr.
Mr. Campbell graduated from Shenandoah High School and Dunmore Business College. He retired in 1987 from Norfolk & Southern Railroad as an assistant trainmaster after 30 years of service. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, where he sang in the church choir. He was a member of the Lions Club, Ashlar Lodge 125, 32nd Degree Mason, the Caverns Shriners Club, the Scottish Rite of Free Masonary, and the ACCA Temple.
He is survived by his wife, V. Beatrice Combs Campbell; one daughter, Kathy C. Litten and husband, Fred, New Hill, N.C.; two sons, Roy Lee Campbell II and wife, Lora, Shenandoah, and Rick Campbell and wife, Denise, Elkins; one brother, Frank Campbell, Elkton; five sisters, Helen Haugh, Hazel Campbell, Mary Comer and Shirley Croft, all of Shenandoah, Va., and Brenda Hilliard, Stanley, Va.; three grandchildren, Dee Litten and fiance, Dylan, Jessica Campbell and Lance Bond.
The Rev. James Daley and the Rev. Warren Grant will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Peter Lutheran Church. Vada V. Campbell
Vada V. Campbell, 82, of 602 Buckhannon Manor, Buckhannon, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, in Holbrook’s Nursing Home in Buckhannon.
Mrs. Campbell was born May 21, 1919, in Moorefield, a daughter of the late Jesse Elmer and Mary Susan Schell Miller.
She married Merl Wilbur Campbell, who preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1982.
Surviving are two daughters, Judith A. Tenney and Becky Davis, both of Buckhannon; three sons, Robert Campbell, Morgantown, Carl W. Campbell and Stephen R. Campbell, both of Buckhannon; one brother, Thomas Miller, Moorefield; two sisters, Gladys Burgess, Keyser, and Elizabeth Simon, Moorefield; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Schell, Ervin Miller and Walter Miller; two grandson, Marcus Allen Campbell and Patrick Tenney; and one granddaughter, Pamela Sue Campbell.
Mrs. Campbell was a nurses aide. She was a lifetime member of Buckhannon VFW Post 3663 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a foster grandparent and senior companion.

Pauletta Bright Canfield, 40, a former resident of Tucker County and more recently of Elkins, departed this life Monday morning, Sept. 9, 2002, at her home, following a sudden illness.

Pauletta K. Canfield
Pauletta Kay Bright Canfield, 40, a former resident of Tucker County, and a resident of Elkins, departed this life Monday morning, Sept. 9, 2002, at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.
She was born June 16, 1962, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Harold G. "Squeek" Bright, who preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 2001, and Nettie G. Loughry Bright, who survives at Pheasant Run.
On May 14, 1994, she was married to Junior Clyde Canfield, who survives.
Also surviving are four brothers, James Patrick Bright and wife, Vickie, Pifer Mountain, Michael L. Bright, Mark A. Bright, and her twin brother, Paul K. Bright, all of Pheasant Run; her stepmother-in-law, Rosie Canfield, Moore; three brothers-in-law, Elmer Canfield, Donnie and Ronnie Canfield, Parsons; three sisters-in-law, Gail Quibb and husband, Doug, Morgantown, Kathy Connell and husband, John, Moore, and Mary Canfield, Oklahoma; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1981. She was a member of the Irons Chapel Church at Pheasant Run. She loved painting, puzzles and animals.

Terrance Walter Canon, 54, of Pentress, passed away Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, in Morgantown.

John L. Carl
John Lucas Carl, 100, a resident of Broaddus Long Term Care, died Monday evening, July 29, 2002, in the Long Term Care Facility, following a long and productive life.
He was born Dec. 19, 1901, in Cove District, Barbour County, a son of the late Daniel M. and Montana (Forman) Carl.
In November 1928, he married the former Mabel Nestor, who preceded him in death on June 21, 1970.
Survivors include one brother-in-law, Otto Nestor, Kasson; and several Nestor nieces and nephews, and several cousins including, Mrs. Ruth Shaffer, Philippi, George Forman, Longmont, Colo., and Ralph Forman, Bedford, Va.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Henry D. Carl.
Mr. Carl had a long affiliation with Alderson-Broaddus College, the Myers Clinic Hospital and the Broaddus Hospital.
For a time, the Carl family’s farm was operated as the Alderson-Broaddus College farm, utilizing a farm manager and student labor to provide meat, dairy products and vegetables for use by the college.
Mr. Carl joined the Myers Clinic Hospital staff in 1940 and served a year of on-the-job training, without pay, in the maintenance department, before receiving employee status in 1941. His duties also included transportation of student nurses, via station wagon, between the A-B campus and the Myers Clinic Hospital for clinical training during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl made a substantial contribution to Broaddus Hospital during the construction of the facility. Mr. Carl came to Broaddus Hospital as director of maintenance when the facility opened its doors for the first time in 1954. He continued to be a loyal employee until he chose semi-retirement in 1968. Even in semi-retirement, Mr. Carl continued his involvement in and support for Broaddus Hospital. He served in a consulting role during the construction of the Chandler Wing as well as the emergency room and auditorium addition. He had made his home in the Chandler Wing since 1973 and though retired in the late 1970s he continued to be a visible member of the health care team, often assisting with unlocking doors, reading blue-prints and sharing invaluable information. He kept himself versed on current hospital issues and was often a reference source for the staff. He also served as an active member of the board of trustees of the hospital for several years. Mr. Carl had resided in the Long Term Care Facility since it opened in September 2000. Broaddus Hospital was his home and its staff was his family. His service to the Myers Clinic Hospital and Broaddus Hospital total a remarkable 52 years.
Mr. Carl was a member of the Crim Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as a consultant on building matters. He was a 50 plus year member of Bigelow Lodge 562, AF & AM, Tygarts Valley Chapter 39, RAM and Philippi Chapter 41, OES.
Friends may call at the Stemple & Forman Funeral Home in Philippi from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, when funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. John M. Carpenter
John M. Carpenter, 79, of 9 Lincoln Way, Buckhannon, died Monday, March 25, 2002, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.
Mr. Carpenter was born May 12, 1922, in Buckhannon, a son of the late Floyd M. and Wilma Burnside Carpenter.
On Aug. 3, 1945, he married Virginia Lee Brooks Carpenter, who survives.

Mr. Carpenter was a pharmaceutical representative for Schering-Plough Pharmaceutical Co. He served in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot during World War II. He was past president of Buckhannon Lions Club, a member of BPOE Lodge 1736 and Buckhannon Country Club. He attended First Presbyterian Church on South Locust Street.

John M. Carpenter, 79, of 9 Lincoln Way, Buckhannon, died Monday, March 25, 2002, in United Hospital Center in Clarksburg.

Opal Pearl Carpenter, 89, of Fairfax, Va., and formerly of Duffy, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, in Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, Va.
Mrs. Carpenter was born Nov. 15, 1912, in Bablin, a daughter of the late Bruce and Eula Wilson Caynor.
On July 4, 1927, she married Russell Ford Carpenter, who preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1989.
Surviving are seven sons, Ford Carpenter, Elyria, Ohio, Kenneth Carpenter, Arnold Carpenter and Ernest Carpenter, all of Weston, Ronald Carpenter, Inwood, Morris Carpenter, Sykes, Md., and James Carpenter, Florida; a daughter, Mabel Mishler, Fairfax, Va.; two brothers, Kermit Caynor, Norton, Ohio, and Earl Caynor, Barberton, Ohio; a sister, Freda Rexroad, Duffy; 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Willard Caynor; and a grandson, Kenny Davidson.
Mrs. Carpenter was a homemaker. She attended Elijah Chapel United Methodist Church in Bablin.

Alton Eugene "Remus" Carr, 69, a resident of Montrose, departed this life Sunday afternoon, Sept. 8, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 22, 1933, at Pheasant Run, a son of the late Russell Carr and Lovey Moran Carr.
On July 27, 1961, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Gwendolyn E. Ferguson, who survives. They celebrated 41 years of marriage.
Also surviving are one stepdaughter, Cynthia Humphrey and husband, Bill, Parsons; one sister, Mary Lou England and husband, Bob, Montrose; two grandchildren, Michele Humphrey, Cullowhee, N.C., and Dwayne Humphrey and wife, Lisa, Warsaw, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Madison Humphrey, Warsaw, N.C.; one nephew, Harry "Sonny" Carr, Westover, who was raised as a brother to "Remus"; and several other nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are three brothers, Russell, Vincent and Earl Carr; and one sister, Betty Oldaker.
He attended the Riverview School on Pheasant Run and the Parsons High School. He worked for the former Crosten Service State of Parsons, the Kingsford Charcoal Co. and was a heavy equipment mover for the R.H. Armstrong Co. for more than 37 years, retiring in January 1998. He was an accomplished musician and gospel singer. He performed with The Carr Trio for several years, and also played with Zion Gospel Group. He played at the Crystal Springs Jamboree at Crystal Springs. He was known for his workmanship on antique clocks and he was a Harley Davidson enthusiast.

Ernest Ervin Carr, 58, of Whitmer and a patient in Elkins Regional Convalescent Hospital, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Carr was born April 22, 1943, in Whitmer, a son of Marvie Elizabeth Mallow Carr, who survives in Whitmer, and the late Dewey Carr.
He was never married.

Mr. Carr was a Pentecost by faith and attended Whitmer Church of God.

John P. Carr
John Pershing Carr, 83, of 259 Terrace Ave. and more recently of Colonial Place in Elkins, died Sunday morning, Feb. 3, 2002.
Mr. Carr was born Nov. 12, 1918, a son of the late William H. and Clara Graig Carr.
On Aug. 29, 1941, he married the former Martha Ferguson, who survives in Colonial Place.
Also surviving are two sons, Jay Ferguson Carr, Hershey, Pa., and William Graig Carr, Elkins; a daughter, Martha Lynn Holden, Timonium, Md.; a sister, Dorothy Carr MacDonald, Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mr. Carr received his law degree from National University in Washington, D.C., and worked for Dow, Lohnes and Albertson before moving to Elkins during 1955. He was president of Marja Broadcasting Corp. and WDNE Radio for many years. He was the director emeritus of the Elkins YMCA, director general of Mountain State Forest Festival, was a president of Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce, a director of the Davis Trust Co. and longtime sponsor of the AA. He was also a member of the Elkins Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks of Elkins, and served on the Elkins Housing Authority and Randolph County Airport Authority.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, where he served as treasurer, vestryman and lay reader.

Marvie Elizabeth Mallow Carr, 99, a former resident of Whitmer and a patient in Nella’s Nursing Home in Crystal Springs, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002, in the emergency department of Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 16, 1903, at Whitmer, a daughter of the late George and Clementine Nelson Mallow.
She was married to Dewey Russell Carr, who preceded her in death in 1966.
She is survived by five sons, Kelly Carr, Elkins, Shelby Carr, Holly, Mich., Hubert Carr, Everett, Wash., Trevy Carr, Jacksonville, Fla., and Willy Lambert of Whitmer; one brother, Snowden Mallow, Whitmer; two sisters, Erma Armentrout, Whitmer, and Eva Marstiller of Dailey; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Ernest Carr; four brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Carr was a homemaker and a Mennonite by faith.

Twila Virginia Carter, 77, of 2145 Fourth St., Port Townsend, Wash., died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Carter was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Moody Sewell Channell and the late Laura Mae Poe.
On May 14, 1956, in Clullam County, Wash., she married Earl Robert Carter, who preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1996.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Lee Carter, Bellingham, Wash., and Richard Lee Caricofe, Salina, Kan.; a daughter, Judith Elaine Laurent, Port Townsend, Wash.; a granddaughter, Patricia Juarez; and a great-grandson, Donald E. Green.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou Robinson.
Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Elkins High School. She and her husband moved to Port Townsend, Wash., 35 years ago upon his retirement from the Navy.

Donald Edward "Don" Carter, 77, a resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, departed this life Saturday morning, Sept. 14, 2002, at the home. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born Sept. 1, 1925, at Worcester, Mass., a son of the late Harry Carter and Esther Wheeler Carter.
On Feb. 22, 1975, at Maryland, he was married to the former Eva Lee Bohon, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Timothy Carter, Cary, N.C.; one stepson, Ronald L. Slavin and wife, Suzanne, Seabrook, Texas; one stepdaughter, Pamela Slavin Harper and husband, Richard, Parsons; one sister, Shirley Blood and husband, Arthur, Worcester, Mass.; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He attended the schools of Massachusetts. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a former employee of the Washington Starr Newspaper of Washington, D.C., as a graphic arts designer for 25 years. He is a member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church at Parsons, where he was an active member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Tucker County Senior Center of which he was a member of the Goldenaires. He was a member of the Stansbury Lodge No. 12 AF & AM, District of Columbia, of which he served as Worshipful Master during the years of 1975 and 1978. He was a member of the Scottish Rites 32nd Degree, District of Columbia, and was an honorary member of the William R. Singleton-Hope-Lebanon Lodge No. 7, and a member of Mt. Pleasant No. 13 Royal Arch Masons of the District of Columbia.

Maudaline D. Shockey Carver, 87, a resident of Nella’s Nursing Home since June of 2001, departed this life Wednesday evening, March 13, 2002, at the nursing home. She had been in declining health for the past several years.
She was born Jan. 1, 1915, at Long, a daughter of the late Harrison G. Shockey and Missouri R. Currence Shockey.
On Oct. 25, 1948, she was married to Charles E. "Chick" Carver, who preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1983.
Surviving are two brothers, Jacob Lee Shockey and wife, Rosemarie, Baltimore, Md., and Neal Edwin Shockey, and wife, Edna, Mabie; three sisters, Mrs. Bill (Martha) Thornhill, Kansas City, Mo., Mary Ann Chidester, Mill Creek, and Myrtle Weese, Norton, Ohio; several nieces and nephews and a very special sister, Carrie A. Weese, Elkins.
Mrs. Carver had worked at General Industries at Elyria, Ohio, and at EMTEC for more than 20 years. She was a member of Delphia Rebekah Lodge 62 and the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center and a former member of the Melody Chorus at the Senior Center. She was a member of Victory Baptist Temple at Lorain, Ohio and after moving to Elkins, attended Otterbein United Methodist Church of Elkins.

Jerry R. Cassell
Jerry R. Cassell, 78, of Richmond, Va., died Monday, April 1, 2002.
He was born in Cass, a son of Willis and Pearl Cassell.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen; three daughters, Diane Cassell, Gerilyn Alderman and husband, Randy, of Buckhannon, and Martha Thompson and husband, Steve; eight grandchildren, two brothers, Neal Cassell of Cass, and Grey Cassell of Brandywine; and three sisters, Gayle Mullenax of Arbovale, Beatrice Young of Virginia Beach, Va., and Charlotte Galford of Portsmouth, Va.
He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps 8th Air Force during World War II. Later, he retired from the appliance business. He was past commander of the American Legion Post 244, Glen Allen, Va., and the American Ex-POW’s, Denny Landrum Chapter in Richmond, Va. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and a lifetime member of the VFW and the DAV. He was devoted to his volunteer work at the McGuire Veterans Administration Hospital for many years.
His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home, Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. Coleen Bell Casto, 56, of Albany, Ohio, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson, Ohio.
She was born May 31, 1945, in Maryland, a daughter of the late Minor Van Buren and Bessie Day Bell.
She is survived by her husband, Curtis Casto; one son, Curtis Casto and wife, Kristi, Belington; three daughters, Colleen Arthur of Athens, Carmen Bartkowiak and husband, Jeff, of Denville, N.J., and Carletta LeMay and husband, Bennie, of Zaleski; eight grandchildren, Casey Casto and Holly LeMay of Zaleski, Lindsey Camp of Dundas, Emily McGhee of Point Pleasant, Baron Casto of Ontario, Canada, Diana and Patrick Bush and Kayleigh Casto, all of Belington; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by one brother.
She was a former 12-year employee of Pillsbury.

Maretta Adariene Casto, 67, of PO Box 37, French Creek, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at her home in Buckhannon.
She was born March 29, 1935, in Webster Springs, a daughter of the late Henry and Mildred Chippe Perrine.
She married Ira Arnold Casto, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Arnold Casto, Weston, and Thomas Casto, Buckhannon; one daughter, Maretta Casto, French Creek; one sister, Wanda Curtis, Buckhannon; one brother, Jack Perrine, Buckhannon; three grandsons, Benjamin Casto, Buckhannon, Justin Nesbitt and Grant Riffle, Florida; and two granddaughters, Tabitha Casto and Samantha Casto, both of Buckhannon.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Karen Perrine; and one brother, Charles Perrine.
She was a homemaker.

Thirl Edward Caynor, 76, of Route 2, Box 98, Buckhannon, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at his home in Buckhannon.
He was born Aug. 14, 1925, at Lantz, a son of the late Jeannette Dawson and Willa Jean Rucker Caynor.
On May 21, 1949, he married Willa Jean Rucker Caynor, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert D. (Chickey) Cable and Holly JoAnn Caynor, all of Buckhannon; one son, Darius Caynor, Norton; two brothers, Denver Caynor and David Caynor, both of Buckhannon; two sisters, Elda Wilt, Morgantown, and June Riggleman, Massilon, Ohio; three grandsons, Kurt Wagoner and Scott Wagoner, both of Buckhannon, and Steven Caynor, Norton; two granddaughters, Mindi Wagoner, Charlotte, N.C., and Melanie Caynor, Elkins; two great-grandsons, Dakota Wagoner, Buckhannon, and Steven Caynor II, Elkins; and one great-granddaughter, Makenzie Wagoner, Buckhannon.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Erma Lee Caynor.
He was a store manager for Osburns Store and retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with Co. G 3rd Infantry Regiment France, Germany.
He was a life member of Buckhannon VFW Post 3663 and a member of the West Virginia Draft Horse and Mule Association. He attended Sand Run Baptist Church.

Nataline E. Centofonti
Nataline E. Centofonti, 88, a resident of Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home, formerly of 12 N. Main St., Keyser, departed this life Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at the nursing home.
She was born Sept. 4, 1913, at Bayard, a daughter of the late Giovanni DelSignore and Marianne DelSignore.
She was married to Vincent James Centofonti, who preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1944.
Surviving are one son, Peter J. Centofonti Sr. and wife, Barbara, Keyser; three brothers, Frank T. DelSignore, Cresaptown, Md., Eugene DelSignore, Alexandria, Va., and Robert P. DelSignore, New Creek; four sisters, Pauline Carderella, Woburn, Mass., Lucy Varchetto, Elkins, Yolanda Taccino, Cumberland, Md., and Rosalie Hauser, Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren, Peter J. Centofonti Jr. and wife, Bonnie, Romney, Marianne Bamburg and husband, Charles, Keyser, Barbara Tang and husband, Peter, Alexandria, Va., and James Matthew Centofonti, Keyser; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Renee Centofonti and Dana Marie Bamburg; 36 nieces and nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Renald and Ernest DelSignore; and two sisters, Mary Solina Marsella and Margaret Smith.
Mrs. Centofonti was a graduate of Bayard High School at Bayard with the class of 1931. She was a retired nurse’s aide at Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser with more than 18 years of service and was an active and dedicated member of the Church of Assumption at Keyser.
Friends were received at Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Church of the Assumption with the Rev. Father Ivan M. Lebar, TOR, as celebrant. Robert W. Champ
Robert W. "Jack" Champ, 81, a resident of Annapolis, Md., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Md.
He was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Flint, a son of the late Dick and Daisy Champ.
He was married to Alpha Wyatt Champ, who preceded him in death on May 11, 1985.
He is survived by one brother, Carl Champ of Bend, Ore.; two sisters, Bernece Gooding of Davis, and Helen White of Elkins. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Arthur Champ and Herman "Buddy" Champ; and a sister, Edith Champ.
Mr. Champ was employed for more than 20 years as a mechanical worker for the U.S. Navy prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Hartsell F. Channell
Hartsell F. Channell, 90, of Warren, Ohio, and formerly of Norton, died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at his residence following a short illness.
He was born Feb. 4, 1912, at Valley Head, a son of the late Spencer Channell and Eva J. Arbogast.
On Aug. 26, 1944, he married the former Icy Ruth Herron, who preceded him in death on March 4, 1988.
Surviving are six daughters, Norma J. Beck, Brookfield, Ohio, Patricia Joyce Rutherford, Windham, Ohio, Icie Ruth Click, Champion, Ohio, Carol J. Berkenstock, Warren, Ohio, Julie A. Enderton, Warren, Ohio, and Roberta J. Guerriero, Youngstown, Ohio; two sons, Ronald D. Channell and Roger H. Channell, both of Warren, Ohio; one sister, Alma Shaffer, Valley Head; 24 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by twin daughters, Lula and Lulabelle; six brothers, four sisters and one grandson.
Mr. Channell was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He worked for Standard Transformer as an assembler and retired after 22 years in 1974.

Virginia Channell
Virginia Channell, 91, a resident of 303 Diamond St., Elkins, passed away Monday evening, July 15, 2002, at her home.
She was born Feb. 2, 1911, at Edray, a daughter of the late John Swiger and the late Nettie LeMasters Swiger. She was raised near Becky’s Creek.
On March 27, 1932, she was married to Carl W. Channell, who preceded her in death on April 25, 1988. Mr. and Mrs. Channell met at the Valley Chapel Church, where she sang in the choir.
Also surviving are two sons, Bill Channell and wife, Wanda, and Havard Channell and wife, Carolyn, all of Elkins; five daughters, Thelma Blake, Evelyn Brewster, Betty Kelly and husband, Don, and Donna Teter and husband, Charlie, all of Elkins, and Patty Channell and son, James, of Florida; one brother, Arden Swiger and wife, Ethel, of Elkins; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were brothers, Allen and Roy Swiger and sisters, Goldie, Clara and Elsie.
She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and greatly enjoyed traveling and spending time with her loved ones. She is loved and sadly missed by all who knew her.

Edward D. Chenoweth
Edward Dale Chenoweth, 76, of Grayland, Wash., and formerly of Elkins, California and Arkansas, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, in Sunbridge Care & Rehab, Montesano, Wash.
Mr. Chenoweth was born Aug. 5, 1924, in Elkins, a son of Roy Perry and Elva Doerr Chenoweth.
On Sept. 12, 1945, in Phoenix, Ariz., he married Bettye Ingraham Chenoweth, who survives at the family home in Grayland, Wash.
Also surviving are two sons, Keith E. Chenoweth of Richland, Wash., and Rodney A. Chenoweth of Grayland, Wash.; one daughter, Pamela M. Chenoweth of Salem, Ark.; one brother, Bernard Chenoweth of Durham, N.C.; three sisters, Eleanor Fletcher and Roseale Martin, both of Elkins, and Erma Shelton, Tempe, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lauren, Roy Jr. and Charles.
Mr. Chenoweth was raised in Elkins and attended Elkins High School. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a general contractor and master builder in several states including Hawaii, Nevada, Washington, northern and southern California. He was a builder from your average custom home to custom homes for celebrities. He was a member of Grayland Fire Department No. 11 in Grayland, Wash. for eight years. He loved the outdoors, liked to hunt, fish, goldpan and go jeeping.
A Memorial Mass will be at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Westport, Wash. June 15 at 10 a.m. A Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. Evergreen Mortuary & Cremation of Grays Harbor is in charge of the arrangements. From 3 Jun 2002.

James E. Chenoweth
James E. Chenoweth, 56, of Route 2, Belington, died Saturday evening, Aug. 17, 2002, as a result of an ATV accident.
He was born Oct. 19, 1945, at Beverly, a son of the late Charles B. and Amanda V. Bender Chenoweth.
On Feb. 13, 1966, he married the former Janet L. Weese, who survives at Route 2, Belington.
Also surviving are two daughters, Michelle Shreve and Kris Haddix, both of Belington; three brothers, Raymond Chenoweth, Belington, Frank Chenoweth, Parkersburg, and Donald Chenoweth, Indiana; five sisters, Linda Dolly, Petersburg, Janet L. Chenoweth, Parkersburg, Judy Lantz, Lakeland, Fla., Dora A. Moellendick, Parkersburg, and Cora Chenoweth, Cincinnati, Ohio; two grandsons, Zachary Haddix and Riley Haddix; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert W. Chenoweth.
Mr. Chenoweth was a former welder and mechanic in surface mining. He was a Vietnam era Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Willard O. Chenoweth
Willard Owen Chenoweth, 81, a resident of Elkins, passed away at 1:02 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002, in Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department. Death was attributed to congestive heart failure.
He was born Oct. 17, 1920, at Elkins, a son of the late Beebe and Hattie McQuain Chenoweth.
In June, 1943, he was married to the former Betty Jo Rowe, who preceded him in death in 1945. In February, 1946, he married Adeline Agnes Smith and in March, 1987, he married Geraldine Tacy, who survives.
Also surviving are his children, Willard Joe and Pam Chenoweth of Parsons, Allen Chenoweth, Gary and Marsha Chenoweth, Mike and Sue Chenoweth, Jeff and Julie Chenoweth and Terry Chenoweth, all of Elkins, Kevin and Leslie Chenoweth of Wheeling, Cathy Sue Wingler of Buckhannon, Nancy and Elmer Rogers of Elkins, Frances Cook of Ohio, Dempsey Tacy of Elkins, Jim and Donna Tacy of Texas, Michael and Peggy Tacy of Huttonsville, Terry Tacy of South Dakota and Richard and Martha Tacy of Wyoming; 34 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, five sisters and two grandchildren.
Mr. Chenoweth attended the schools of Randolph County and was a 1938 graduate of Elkins High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He played semi-professional baseball as a pitcher for Elkins between 1946 and 1955 in the Mountain State Baseball League. He was employed at Elkins Tannery, Western Maryland Railroad and H.B. Moore. He was an electrician by trade and in 1959 he went to work as the supervisor of maintenance at Davis & Elkins College, where he retired in 1995. He was a life member of H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion. He was a former member and first assistant firechief of the Leading Creek Volunteer Fire Department and a Methodist by faith.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with Pastor David Collins officiating. Interment will follow in the American Legion’s Little Arlington Cemetery at Elkins, where full military rites will be accorded by members of H.W. Gerald N. Chewning
Gerald Nelson Chewning, 84, a former resident of Mabie and a resident of Fisher since 1999, passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, June 30, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital emergency department.
He was born Nov. 7, 1917, at Cassity, a son of the late Oscar G. and Rita Herron Chewning.
On Nov. 18, 1942, he married the former Maida E. Simmons, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Gerald L. Chewning and wife, Dorothy, of Melbourne, Fla.; five daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Judy) McCollam of Mabie, Mrs. Robert (Anna) Bobo of Fisher, Mrs. Willie (Nancy) Haggerty of Purgitsville, Ms. Catherine Weese and Mrs. Casey (Sandy) Carriger, both of Moorefield; one brother, Thurman Chewning of East Dailey; two sisters, Retha Ward of Elkins, and Agnus Poling of Huttonsville; 17 grandchildren, one stepgrandson and 15 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding him in death were one son, Theodore Rodney Chewning; one grandson, Michael Weese; two brothers, Orval O. and Loyal Junior Chewning; and two sisters, Ruby Linger and Ola Graham.
Mr. Chewning worked for 24 years as a coal miner, several years in the woods and sawmill business and retired after 14 1/2 years as a heavy equipment mechanic for the West Virginia Department of Highways.

Lonnie L. Chewning
Lonnie L. Chewning, 87, a patient in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, died Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2002, in the center.
Mr. Chewning was born June 1, 1914, in Mill Creek, a son of the late Elihue and Esther Shiflett Chewning.
He married Beulah Brake Chewning, who preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1991.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Gerald (Maude) Wamsley, Mill Creek, and Mrs. Edward (Agatha Kate) Smith, Elkins; a sister-in-law, Opal Brake, Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence "Bud" Chewning; and an infant sister, Edna Chewning.
Mr. Chewning attended the schools of Randolph County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed as a crane operator for many years in the the shipyards of Baltimore, Md.

Pamela S. Chewning
Pamela Sue "Pam" Chewning, 48, a resident of Route 2, in Belington, departed this life at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002, at her home, following an extended illness. Death was attributed to cancer.
She was born Nov. 9, 1953, at Ohio, a daughter of Wilda Stark, who survives at Belington.
On Nov. 19, 1972, at Belington, she was united in marriage to Robert L. Chewning, who survives at their home in Belington.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by one son, Robert L. Chewning Jr., San Pedro, Calif.; one daughter, Amanda R. Maynard and husband, Tommy, Beverly; one granddaughter, Taylor B. Maynard; three brothers, Eugene "Bub," Lee and Jeff Delauder, all of Belington; and two sisters, Chris Bennett, Belington, and Margie Nay, Columbus, Ohio.
Mrs. Chewning attended the schools of Barbour County. She was a homemaker and a Protestant by faith.
Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington and Tuesday until 2 p.m., the funeral hour, when services will be conducted from the funeral home parlor with the Rev. Rose "Jo" McCartney officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery at Belington. From 22 Apr 2002.
