Columbus Hoover

Clinton Public, DeWitt County, Illinois
October 27, 1882
Died at the home of Nicholas Foley, in Wilson township, October 17, 1882, Columbus Hoover, from injuries received from being thrown from a horse. He was born in 1862, in West Virginia, and was the son of John and Christena Hoover. His life was a brief one, and as we scan the backward flow of years, dark shadows overhang the stream. Left an orphan in early childhood, his father having lost his life in the defense of his country, the first year of the rebellion, he and his elder brother George were left dependent on their widowed mother for support. In 1877 the two brothers emigrated to try to make an honest living for themselves, and by honest industry and by careful industry and economy had earned enough money to buy 120 acres of land near Storm Lake, Iowa, where the brothers intended to move this winter. The funeral was preached the Rev. Lapham, of DeWitt, assisted by Rev. Stoddard, of Saybrook at the Chapel. The high esteem in which he was held was evident from the large attendance at the funeral. Every neighborhood where the boys had worked laid aside their worldly cares to attend the funeral. Though Columbus was among strangers, he found kind friends and loving hands to administer the last sad rights. A beautiful wreath was placed on his coffin and he was quietly laid to rest in Rucker Chapel Cemetery. George Hoover, the bereaved brother, has the sympathy of the entire community. Submitted by K.B. A.G. Mouse, OBITUARY - Pendleton Times, January 9, 1931

The death of A. G. Mouse, living northeast of Urich, about 9 o'clock Tuesday morning, brought deep sorrow into the hearts of the community. He had been out doing the chores and had his team hitched up preparatory to hauling corn. He and a neighbor, Gomer Jenkins, were in another lot with the gate open between, and his younger son, Clifford, was in the barn. The team became frightened and started to run, Mr. Mouse trying to stop them. The team struck him, knocking him down and his head striking the hard ground. His skull was fractured behind the left ear, a gash being cut about an inch long. He was removed to the house and Dr. L. L. Smith called. They were intending to convey him to a hospital and had called an ambulance, but he passed away in about an hour, Before the ambulance arrived, never regaining consciousness. Mr. Mouse had been in poor health for about a year, but had remarked that morning that he felt better than he had for a long time, and seemed so happy then and the evening, before. The family was planning a Christmas reunion, had a decorated tree, and the atmosphere of the home seemed to radiate the Christmas spirit. The taking away of this beloved husband and father has east a gloom over the hearts and lives of the companion and children that would be unbearable if it were not that the Heavenly Father has said that He will not leave us comfortless. May the holy Spirit he ever near them in this time of grief. He alone can soothe the aching heart and make it possible to bear up under such trails. Deceased was born June 15, 1884, in West Virginia. He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Lee Martz August 29, 1905, at Altona, Mo., and they came to Henry county about 12 years ago.

His wife and two sons survive: Herbert, who is married, but resides in the parents home, and Clifford. Herbert was helping a neighbor, Roy Gamlin, with saw log cutting when he was told of his father's serious injury. Others surviving him are: His parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Mouse, of Adrian, and the following brothers and sister; Frank Mouse and Mrs. Lena Porter, of Kansas City; Olie and Scott Mouse, Emporia, Kansas; John Mouse, Wichita, Kansas; Will and Charles Mouse, Adrian.

Mr. Mouse was among the most enterprising and prosperous farmers and stockmen of Henry county, taking premiums on his horses whenever entered in various County and State Fairs. He had provided a wonderful home for his family, in which love and kindness reigned. He was held in the highest esteem by a legion of friends who loved him for his unselfishness and many admirable traits of character. He was a member of the Christian church, his membership being with the church, his membership being with the church at Altona.
Funeral services will be conducted at the home at 2 p.m. Christmas day by Rev. Lucas, of Lee's Summit, and burial will be in the Garden City cemetery.
Note: The above, taken from a newspaper of Adrian, Mo., was sent to the Times by M. H. Mouse, father of the deceased A. G. Mouse, for publication in Mr. Mouse's native county where he is well known. Submitted by Jeanette Simkins: [email protected]
