THE LONG FAMILY - A BRIEF HISTORY 1938
HISTORY OF THE LONG FAMILY
The history of the Long Family dates back to Revolutionary War Days when a soldier named John Long came to the new country with General Lafayette's Army to aid the colonies in their fight for independence.
After having served about five years and seven months with General Lafayette's Army, John Long married and settled near what is now the town of Franklin in Pendleton County, West Virginia. The name of his wife is not known and it is probable that her name will never be learned.
Three sons, George A., John, and Reuben were born to the union of John Long and his wife, and due to the fact that John and Reuben were placed in the home of persons not related to them and whose names are not known, very little of their descendants and nothing is known about whom they married. However, it has been learned that Hiram Long and Mrs. Eli Moore of Big Cheat and Teter's Creek, near Meadowsville, W.Va., Mrs. Ella B. Lilly of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a Mrs. Dorflinger of Columbus, Ohio, are decendants of either John or Reuben. It has also been learned that two children were born to the union of Hiram Long and his wife, whose name is not known. Nothing further is known of the decendants of John and Reuben except that the names of the children of Hiram are Squire Long and a Mrs. Camfield.
It is earnestly requested that in event any reader of this history is aware of the fact the name of any decendant has been omitted or is incorrect, such fact be brought to the attention of an official of the Long Reunion in order that such ommissions or errors may be avoided in future editions of the family history. It is hoped that a complete history of the family may be published upon occasion of some future reunion and it is believed that cooperation on the part of all who are aware of emmisions of or errors in names will assist in accomplishing this end.
The following children were born to the union of George A. Long and Winnie Long, nee Winnie Nelson:
Abel N., Absolum, William, Martha, Betsy, and Amanda.
It is the intention of the writer to list all the known descendants of each of the above named children of George A. and Winnie Long, consectutively, and it is believed that such procedure will enable the reader to obtain a better understanding of each descendant's place in the history.
