      The following are just some of Lincoln County, West Virginia's early pioneers, other individuals, and early- to mid-20th century politicians. Following the names (if known) are years of birth and death (most of the biographies of individuals have been extracted from books published prior to the individual's death); birthplace; burial location; occupation; spouse (including year of marriage); and other surnames that were mentioned in the biography (in italics). For those who don't have a link to a biography, which will include religion, organization affiliations, etc., that has been included here. Note: although West Virginia did not become a state until after the Civil War, Lincoln County and/or cities within that county are often referred to here and in the biographies as West Virginia prior to 1865 — all mention of West Virginia in those instances was really Virginia.
      Note: In many cases, these surnames could have been a mere mention; in other cases they have more information. Frequently, these links to more complete biographies will contain names, birthdates, and additional information on the individual's parents and siblings.
     For a number of the names here, I have found no additional information beyond what is listed. Because Lincoln County was formed from Kanawha, Boone, Putnam and Cabell counties, in 1867, some of the early settlers mentioned here connect in today's boundaries of those counties of West Virginia. They have been included because of some connection to Lincoln — they were born or died in Lincoln County, lived or worked here at one time, or married into a family from Lincoln County. They might even have influenced the outcome of a battle fought in the area and their only connection was their military experience while in Lincoln County.

Braden A. ABBOTT (1835-?) Born Kanawha County, Virginia; came to Lincoln County, 1877; physician in Jefferson District, farming land on Stinson Creek in the Jefferson District of Lincoln County; married first, Catherine WILKISON, and second, Rhuhame ESTEP in 1867; Estep, Scott, Wilkison, Woodrum.

Albert M. ADKINS (1844-?) Born in Lincoln County, Virginia; farmer on Fourteen-mile Creek in the Laurel Hill district; married, 1868, Casby J. LAMBERT; Hedrick, Hunter.

Elza B. ADKINS (?-?) of Hamlin, Lincoln County, West Virginia; Chair of Lincoln County Democratic Party, 1940.

Evermont ADKINS (1839-?) Born in Wayne County, Virginia; came to Lincoln County in 1844; school trustee, farmer in the Laurel Hill District; married, 1865, Elizabeth Hester DRAKE; Drake, Hunter, Lucas.

H.C. ADKINS (1853-?) Born Lincoln County, Virginia; farmer in the Laurel Hill District; married, 1873, Sarah M. SMITH; Myers, Smith.

Lewis ADKINS (1814-?) Born in Wayne County, Virginia; moved to what is now Lincoln County in 1841; farmer in Laurel Hill District; married first to Melcena HUNTER, and second, 1866, to Emma BROOMFIELD; Bradshaw, Broomfield, Haskins, Hunter.

Murrill ADKINS (1918-1998) born Lincoln County, West Virginia; died Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter of Andrew Jackson and Maggie ADKINS; retired from Frisches in Cincinnati, Ohio; three children surviving.

Watson ADKINS (?-?) Member of West Virginia state house of delegates from Lincoln County, elected 1934.

William A. ALBRIGHT (1817-?) Born in Wythe County, Virginia; moved to Sheridan District of Lincoln County in 1868 where he farms land on Trace Fork of Four-Mile Creek; overseer of the poor, deputy sheriff and constable of his district; married, 1837, Frances ADKINS; Adkins, Camper, Meadows.

George Washington ALFORD (1837-1890) born Cabell County, West Virginia; soldier, farmer; married, 1861, Sarah Jane SMITH; Alford, Coon, Smith.

John ALFORD Sr. (1824-1895) born Lincoln County, West Virginia; constable, county sheriff, deputy United States Marshall of West Virginia, notary public, farmer; married, Jennie MARKHAM; Aistrop, Alford, Hatfield, Markham.

Lafayette ALFORD (1850-1921) born Cabell County, West Virginia; farmer; married, 1873, Sarah Catharine V. Adams; Adams, Alford, Coon, Goode.
