Higginbotham, John Denton (1904-1953)

Charleston Gazette, Saturday 09/12/1953�John Denton Higginbotham of 317 16th St., S.E., widely known Charleston contractor, was found dead in bed at his home at 8 a.m. yesterday. Death was attributed to a heart attack. His body was discovered by his nephew, David Michael Garlach, whom he had reared. Mrs. Higginbotham, the former Beatrice Dial, died March 20 of this year. Mr. Higginbotham, 48, a native of Charleston, operated the A. G. Higginbotham Co., with his brother G. W. Higginbotham of Virginia St. E. Their offices were in the Charleston National Bank Bldg. He was the son of Ambrose Grayson and Mary Frances Medley Higginbotham. He attended local public schools, West Virginia University, and Carnegie Institute of Technology. Service will be 2 p.m. tomorrow in Barlow-Bonsall Mortuary Chapel. Dr. William E. Crane, pastor of Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in Spring Hill Cemetery. Charleston Lodge No. 153, AF&AM, will conduct graveside rites. The Higginbotham construction company was organized in 1901 by Mr. Higginbothams father. it began operating as a partnership with the two sons in 1927 and after the father's death in 1943, the sons carried on. The elder Higginbotham built Charleston's City Hall, Charleston High School, Chesapeake and Ohio Bldg. in Huntington, and several residences in the Charleston area. Some of the current projects are the state office building on Washington St., additions to the Charleston National Bank building, Charleston General Hospital, the Embleton building on Quarrier St., and remodeling of the Dunbar bank building. Other buildings which the company has constructed are additions to the Daniel Boone Hotel, and Montgomery Ward & Co., the Atlantic Greyhound Bus Company's garage and service building on Pennsylvania Av., B'nai Jacob Synagogue and Horace Mann School in Kanawha City. Mr. Higginbotham was a member of Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charleston Lodge No. 153, AF&AM, Beni Kedem Shrine, and was a 32d degree Mason. Surviving besides his brother and nephew is a sister, Mrs. T. J. Riggs of Huntington.

Charleston Gazette, Friday 10/02/1964�Higginbotham, Mrs. Josephine-89, of Sissonville Star Rt., died Thursday at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County and a member of Trace Fork Community Church. Surviving are four sons, David of Poca and Orville, Lud and Okle, all of whose addresses are unknown; six daughters, Mrs. Beulah Skeens, Mrs. Lola Fields, Mrs. Zelma Boggess and Mrs. Lillian Fields, all of Sissonville, and Mrs. Dovie Fugate and Mrs. Ruby Roberts, addresses unknown; three stepsons, Web Higginbotham of Huntington, Addison of Buffalo and Anderson Higginbotham of Dunbar; 25 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Davis will officiate and burial will be in the family cemetery at Trace Fork. The body is at the funeral home.

Charleston Gazette, Sunday 03/23/1947�Higginbotham, Miss Juanita May-24, Cedar Grove, died at home Saturday morning after a short illness. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Higginbotham; two sisters, Mrs. Garnet Hudnall and Mrs. Pearl Phalen, all of Cedar Grove. Service will be at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church Monday at 2 p.m. with Edward L. Parsons, Otis Caldwell and Floyd Stone officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Cedar Grove. The body will be removed from the Perine mortuary to the home at 11 a.m.

Charleston Gazette, Wednesday 10/18/1933�Funeral services for Kitty Iola Higginbotham, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Enos Higginbotham of Dunbar, who died yesterday at a local hospital, are to be held this afternoon at two o'clock at the Trace Fork cemetery. Interment is to be there. Besides the parents, two brothers and one sister survive.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the residence with Rev. J. E. Myers officiating. Burial will be in Teays Hill cemetery with the Bartlett mortuary at St. Albans in charge. The body is at the home. Mrs. Higginbotham was the daughter of Rev. Thomas Harmon, founder of the Antioch Baptist church of which she was a charter member. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. W. W. Henley and Miss Alice Higginbotham, at home; three sons, B. Y. McCormick and P. H. Higginbotham, both of St. Albans, and H. H. Higginbotham of South Charleston; two brothers, W. D. and R. F. Harmon, both of Confidence.

Charleston Gazette, Monday 11/10/1959�Mrs. Gertrude Davidson Higginbotham, 74, who moved from Spring Hill section of South Charleston to Lakeland, Fla., about eight years ago, died there Monday. Death occurred unexpectedly while she was attending a church circle meeting. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland on Wednesday. The body will be returned for burial on Friday in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, Va. Mrs. Higginbotham is survived by her husband, Beverly M., and a daughter, Mrs. Harry Lloyd, both of Lakeland; six sons, Beverly M. Jr. of Buffalo, N. Y., John H. of St. Albans, William K. of Barstow, Calif., Mark of California and Henry and Richard, both of Lakeland; and 19 grandchildren.

Mr. Higginbotham is survived by his widow, Mrs. Laura Higginbotham; two daughters, Miss Alice Higginbotham and Mrs. Ruth Henley; two sons, H. H. Higginbotham of South Charleston and P. H. Charleston Daily Mail, Wednesday 10/16/1918�The funeral of Mrs. Mary Bowen Higginbotham, wife of Marshall Higginbotham local attorney, was held this morning in an undertakers mortuary chapel and interment was made in Spring Hill Cemetery. There was a large attendance of friends from the state house, the bar and of family friends at the service. Her death from pneumonia occurred Monday afternoon at the family residence, 604 Capitol Street.

Charleston Gazette, Tuesday 02/05/1929�Headline: Mrs. Higginbotham Victim of Illness. Heart Disease Fatal to Wife of Local Contractor Mrs. A. G. Higginbotham, aged 53 years, wife of a prominent local contractor, died about midnight Sunday at her home on Virginia Street following a sudden attack of heart disease. Mrs. Higginbotham, who was apparently in good health had retired when she suddenly became ill. Before marriage she was Miss Fannie Medley and her entire life had been spent in Charleston. She was a member of the Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church and was active in church work. Also, she was a member of the Woman's Club of Charleston. Mrs. Higginbotham is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Tom Riggs of Huntington and Mrs. Estelle Alexander of Charleston, and two sons, Weir and John Higginbotham of Charleston. Funeral services will be held at the residence, 1716 Virginia Street, Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock, in charge of Rev. F. J. Brook. Interment will be in Spring Hill cemetery.

Higginbotham, died yesterday morning at her home in Nitro. She was a daughter of the late George S. Morgan, mayor of Nitro, and served in the Kanawha county clerk's office for many years under L. C. Massey and Roscoe N. Moulton. Mrs. Higginbotham was a member of the Eastern Star order and the Methodist church at Nitro. Funeral services are to be held tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at the Nitro Methodist church. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are to be Roscoe N. Moulton, Fred Morris, L. C. Massey, L. A. Edwards, E. W. Carl and Samuel Montague. He was a retired employee of Evans Lumber Co. Surviving are his widow, Annabelle; two sons, Joe and Jerry, both of South Charleston; three sisters, Mrs. Dicie McKemy of Charleston, Mrs. Murle Carte of South Charleston and Mrs. Freda Casto of Ashford; and four grandchildren. Higginbotham, Paul Dunn (1924-1960)

Charleston Gazette, Tuesday 04/19/1960�Front page headline: Leap From Bridge Kills Ex-City Man Charleston and South Charleston firemen were dragging the Kanawha River late Monday for the body of a Dayton, Ohio, man who leaped from the Patrick St. Bridge and apparently drowned. The missing man was identified as Paul Dunn Higginbotham, 35, of 7820 Dogleg Rd., Dayton, a former Charleston resident. Witnesses told authorities they saw Higginbotham, who was walking across the bridge from South Charleston, suddenly climb onto the guardrail near the center and jump. A sister of the missing man, Mrs. Jennie Sieferman, also of Dayton, told police she was with her brother only minutes before he jumped. Police said Mrs. Sieferman left her brother at the end of the bridge and caught a bus to South Charleston. Higginbotham told her he was going to cross the bridge to catch a bus to Cedar Grove. He had been ill for sometime, Mrs. Sieferman told police, and had been working as a painting contractor in Dayton for the past five years. Higginbotham is also survived by his father, Brady L. Higginbotham of Dayton; four brothers, Clair and Charles of Dayton, Arnold of Charleston and Samuel of South Charleston; and two half-sisters, Mrs. O. O. Holmes of Charleston and Mrs. Claudia Abbott of Dayton.

Higginbotham, Perry Francis (1861-1938)

State Gazette, Thursday 05/05/1938�Perry Frances Higginbotham, born September 11, 1861, departed from this life, April 22, 1938 at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 12 days. He was united in marriage to Ida Mae Corfee September 31, 1886 and the this union were born seven children. Four having preceded him in death several years ago, he is survived by his widow and three children, Percy Franklin Higginbotham of North Point Pleasant, Cornelia Livinghood of Hardy, W. Va., and John Higginbotham of Nallen, W. Va. Also surviving are three sisters, Eliza Hart, Nancy Venison and Mina Ewers and two brothers, George Higginbotham and Homer Higginbotham. He was a member of the United Brethren Church and was an active member for a number of years.

Charleston Gazette, Monday 04/27/1942�Front page headline: 2 Women, Man Killed In Automobile Wreck, Car Plunges on Railway Tracks Near London; 4th Injured Two women and a man were killed about 9:20 last night when the automobile in which they were riding went out of control on the Midland trail, left the road and landed on the New York Central tracks in the path of a westbound freight train near London. The impact was such, state police said, that the front wheels of the locomotive were derailed. A fourth person was critically injured. The dead: Russell Higginbotham, Smithers; Pauline Higginbotham, his wife; Ethel Gibson, London. Injured and taken to Laird Memorial hospital at Montgomery was a man identified as James Landers or Lanham, of London. He was still unconscious this morning. Clyde Groves, Charleston, who was at the scene of the wreck, said that Miss Gibson's body was found about 200 feet east of the point of collision, a short distance above the London dam. The bodies were taken to the B. C. Hooper mortuary, Montgomery. Olive cemetery at Marting for Russell Ernest Higginbotham, 24, and his wife, Mrs. Pauline Higginbotham, 19, who were killed Sunday night when the automobile in which they were riding got out of control on the Midland trail, left the road and landed on the New York Central tracks in the path of a westbound train near London. The body of Ethel Gibson of London, also killed in the accident, is at the B. C. Hooper mortuary at Montgomery, pending funeral arrangements. The condition of James Landers of London, injured in the accident, remained critical at the Laird Memorial hospital at Montgomery. Rev. Okey Webb will officiate. The bodies will be removed today to the home of Mr. Higginbotham's sister, Mrs. Thelma Whittington of Smithers. Also surviving Mr. Higginbotham are his mother, Mrs. Pearl Higginbotham; a brother, John Lewis Higginbotham, and two sisters, Mildred and Betty Jo Higginbotham, all of Marting. Surviving Mrs. Higginbotham are her mother, Mrs. Charles Burke of London; three brothers, Gilbert Burke of Gallagher, William Burke of Smithers and Charles Burke, Jr., of London; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Erwin of Rich Creek, Va., and Miss Loraine Burke of London.

Higginbotham, Sallie Maude Barger (1875-1949)

Charleston Daily Mail, Saturday 12/17/1949�Rev. Mark Farran will conduct funeral services Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Wilson mortuary chapel for Mrs. Sallie Maude Higginbotham, 74, who died Friday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. H. R. Waybright, 903 Woodward Dr. Mrs. Higginbotham was a member of the Longdale chapter, Order of the Eastern Star at Winona, and of the Methodist church at Ohley. A native of Fincastle, Va., Mrs. Higginbotham will be buried in the family plot at Clifton Forge, Va.

Higginbotham, Silas Park (1874-1956)

Charleston Gazette, Saturday 08/18/1956�Higginbotham, S. Park-82, of Sissonville, died Thursday at his home. Mr. Higginbotham was a retired farmer and had been a schoolteacher in Kanawha County for 40 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Willa Higginbotham; two sons, Zally O. and Herbert A. (Tom), both of Sissonville; two brothers, Perry of Sissonville and Cecil M. of Dunbar; four sisters, Mary Higginbotham and Mrs. Leslie Carney, both of Sissonville, and Mrs. Cannie Summers and Mrs. Loula Summers, both of Charleston; and 11 grandchildren. The body is at Raynes mortuary in Buffalo and will be taken at 10 a.m. today to the home.

Higginbotham, Sena Altha Holmes (1883-1964)

Charleston Gazette, Wednesday 02/12/1964�Higginbotham, Mrs. Sena Altha-80, of 3233 Third Ave., Nitro, died Tuesday in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Surviving are two sons, Willard Higginbotham of Poca and Felix Holmes of Charleston; a daughter, Mrs. Loretta Vickers at home; a step daughter, Mrs. Emma Kinser of Poca; a brother, Clarence Holmes of Kelly's Creek; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Older of Van, Miss Ola Holmes and Miss Leanna Holmes, both of Kelly's Creek; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in 39th Street Church of the Nazarene at Nitro by Rev. R. R. Matthews. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park. The body is at Gatens Funeral Home in Poca.

Higginbotham, Teresa Lynn (1965)

Charleston Gazette, Tuesday 02/16/1965�three-week-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald L. Higginbotham of 607 Spring St., St. Albans, died Monday at her home. Other survivors include a sister, Lisa Diane; grandparents, Mrs. Delma Higginbotham Cochrane of Charleston and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon R. Crago of St. Albans; and great-grandmother, Mrs. Leota Bogges of Charleston. Service will be at 2 p.m. today in Bartlett Funeral Home at St. Albans with the Rev. Ross Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park. Visitors may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. today.
