FISHER, AUBREY O.
Aubrey "A.O". Fisher of Sissonville, 1908 - 1995, whose baritone poured out gospel music at countess funerals, revivals and church homecomings in the Kanawha Valley, has died. Fisher 87, died Tuesday, July 18, 1995 at home after a long illness, and his brother Denver were original members of the Fisher Quartet, which he began singing in 1939. The group was nicknamed "The Funeral Four". The only time the quartet didn't sing was when A.O. Fisher was in the service for two years during World War II. Fisher was a retired salesman for Capital City Supply, but the quartet was like a second job, even if it didn't get paid. The group sang for all denominations, Songs like "Will someone be waiting"? and What a day that will be? They encountered everything from children's funerals to a bikers funeral, to a corpse that the preacher vowed to raise from the dead. The quartet never used instruments beyond a pitch pipe to get started. "I couldn't play anything but the radio anyway" Fisher said in a 1994 Daily Mail interview. He was a lifelong resident of Sissonville and a member of Fisher Chapel United Methodist Church, Romance. Surviving: wife Nora Beatrice Fisher, daughter, Jewell Cavender of Bancroft; sons Gene of Given, Rex "Butch" and Robert "Bob' of Sissonville; stepchildren, Johnnie Lovejoy and Karen Mercer of Kellys Creek: sisters Wilda Parkins of Charleston, Vergie Morton and Mabel Humphreys of Eleanor, Gertrude McClanahan of Poca, Virginia Withrow of Sissonville, brother Denver of Sissonville; 11 grandchildren 14 great- great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren.
