Hanson, John, A. 1819 - 1899

John A. Hanson was born in Greenbrier County, Virginia, in the year of 1819, he was the son of William and Margaret ( Eary ) Hanson and the grandson of William and Sivilly Hanson of Botetourt County Virginia. Mr. Hanson was a carpenter by trade which he combined with farming. In 1865, John moved with his family from Greenbrier County to the Elk District, Kanawha County, WV and bought what remained of the homestead on Mill Creek. There he died at the age of 82 (eighty-two) years. Mr. Hanson married Miss Mary Jane Shuck on September 27, 1843. Miss Shuck was born in 1822 in Greenbrier County, VA and was the daughter of Moses Shuck and Mary Ann Fleshman. Mary Jane Hanson preceded her husband, John, in death by two weeks. The homestead was sold after their death by their children on April 7, 1900. To Mr. & Mrs. Hanson, the following children were born: Charles A., who married Octavia Mease and had thirteen children; James M., who married Martha Scott and had nine children; Franklin M. who married Sara Jane O'Daniels and had eight children; George C., who married Amanda J. Blake; Ruth A., who married George Spangler; Harvey A. who married Nancy J. Farrell and had eight children; John F., who married Elizabeth Brown and had seven children; and Virginia, who married William Young and had one child. It is believed that John and Mary Jane are buried in the James M. Hanson family cemetery located on the mountain behind Lacy's Market on Mill Creek near a place called Devil's Rock.
