IMPORTANT: West Virginia's birth, death, and marriage records go back ONLY to 1853 at the county level. At the State level, they begin ca 1918 because a fire in 1918 destroyed the building in which they were housed. Counties were asked to hold their submissions until a new home was found; some counties later remembered to send in the 1918-20 records, others did not. Your best source for births, marriages and deaths prior to 1918 is the COUNTY.
