I'm tracing my
Huffman ancestors. The earliest ones I have records of were born in Hardy
County, VA, in the late 1700s and very early 1800s. I have been informed
that Hardy County, VA , is now Grant County, West Virginia. Can you tell
me if this is accurate? Any history you could give me or refer me to would
be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Humbert Fri, 30 Oct 1998 12:22:16
I am trying to
find a book called "Our Heritage" Hardy County by Walworth Publishing.
I am told that they have copies at the Grant County Library in Petersberg.
They do not check these out by the way you can only copy info at the library.
I am interested in the Cosner/Shell family line mentioned in the book.
Do you know how I can find out if there are any more available to purchase
around there? The publisher said the only ones left where there and they
weren't publishing any more. I have tried corresponding with a Harold Garber(
used to be in the Historical Society there I believe) but am unable to
get responses. I live in Minnesota and don't have access directly to VA.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Looking for records
related to Frank BRAFFORD (aka Bradford depending on the record) and wife
Alice PETERSEN. I have been unsuccessful finding them in any nearby US
1880 census record - Frank would have been born about 1855 (parents unknown).
I have found various records of their childrens births/marriages in Hardy
co, including Robert, Anna, Sophia, Daniel (b1880), Ida (b June 1881),
John (b1884) and Janey Elizabeth (b 1888 in Oldfields). Otherwise zilch
on Frank and Alice. No death records or anything from any census records.
Perhaps they were Grant co-residents? Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

BORROR,

Bernard
Koebbe Sun, 03 May 1998 18:16:15
I am seeking any
information regarding a Rose or Rosemary Borror who was born in 1866, probably
Grant County. Her mother's maiden name was "Alt". Her daughter's name was
Ruby Sites. Rose/Rosemary Borror is believed to have been of at least 1/2
Indian blood, probably historic Shawnee, but definitely not Cherokee. She
was typically referred to as "Morning Star" and rarely used her European
name Rose Borror. She reportedly lived in traditional Native American fashion
to include performing ceremonies, wore regalia, attended Pow Wow's, etc.
She lived in a cabin near a mountain called "Turkey Knob" on a "Darcas
or Dorcas" road in the vicinity of Petersburg. The location is also near
a "Russ Run" and "Turkey Run". As the US government rebuilt this cabin
following a fire in the late 1960s, the assumption is that this cabin is
located within the National Forest and may have been the property of the
US Park or Forest Service. Possibly an old Ranger or Fire station, possibly
a CCC camp. The family is seeking to document her Native American descent
and status. Should any information on Rose/Rosemary Borror or "Morning
Star" be available, the family would greatly appreciate notification.

I am searching
for records of my maternal ancestors, the Huffman family. They came to
Ohio from Virginia in 1822. The gravestone of my gggggrandfather, Daniel
Huffman, states that he was born in Hardy County, VA, in 1749. I have been
informed that Hardy County, VA, or at least part of it became Grant County,
West Virginia, around the time of the Civil War. Can you tell me if this
is fact? If so, do you have records of that time period for Hardy County,
VA? What resources would you recommend? An old history book of Clinton
County, Ohio (where these Huffmans settled) states that the above mentioned
Daniel Huffman's father had come from Germany to Virginia "around the middle
of the century". Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

born about 1827, married Elizabeth CARR 1 October 1846 in Randolph County.
Claims on a marriage record that his parents were William and Sarah JORDAN.
After Elizabeth's death, he married Mary Anne (Polly) NELSON and later

in Grant County.
ARONHALT,
HANLIN
Carolyn
Robinson Tue, 06 Jan 1998 21:49:25
My family has been
attempting to trace the Aronhalt branch of our family tree for five+ years....with
very little success. My grandmother is 92 but refuses to give us info beyond
the few facts we have on him. My sister requested his birth certificate,
but was told there wasn't one on file, and to check surrounding counties.
What are those counties??? The 1900 Census indicates that Grover Cleveland
Aronhalt (b. 3/5/1887 in Gormania, Grant Co., WV) was residing with his
(maternal?) grandparents, Samuel Hanlin (b. July 1831) and Jane Hanlin
(b. Nov 1835), then 68 and 64 years of age respectively. Others persons
listed in their household included their son, George A. Hanlin, 25yr (b.
Apr. 1874); son John R. Hanlin, 20yr, (b. Jun 1879); Grover Aronhalt (my
grandfather), age 13 yr, (b. Mar. 5, 1887); and granddaughter, Liew Etta
Hanlin, age 21 yr (b. 1878). It appears that the dwelling was a rental
farm, with "number of farm schedule" as 209. Jane Hanlin, Grover's apparent
grandmother, had 11 children, and 11 children were still living on date
this census was taken. The 1910 Census for Grant Co., WV, shows the following
living together: John R. Hanlin (Head), age 30; Jane Hanlin (Mother), age
74; "Arouhalt" (s/b Aronhalt), Etta, age 31 as a "C" (???) instead of "granddaugher"
(earlier her name was "Hanlin"), and Grover C. (again, a "C" instead of
"grandson"), age 23. The 1920 Census shows Grover C. Aronhalt, age 35,
in Peoria, Peoria Cty, IL, and already married to "Nellie", age 26. Is
there any birth records for children born to Jane and Samuel Hanlin? Any
tax records for rental farms? Any marriage records for Grover Cleveland
Aronhalt and Nellie _____, between 1910-1920? Do you know whether local
cemeteries or any of Grant Co.'s public records might be accessible through
the internet? What newspaper would carry information pertaining to Grant
Co. for 1850 through 1950?

I am researching
the Nicholas Lewis Family. Everytime I try to find out about this family,
they refer me to Grant County. Since I live in Missouri we do not seem
to have much on West Virginia in our local libraries. Nicholas married
Susanna Kimble in 1824 with the permission of Henry Judy. I have not been
able to find any information on why Henry Judy gave the permission. Were
Nicholas parents dead and who were they? Can you give me some leads on
finding out some information on this family. Thank you
