In the summer and fall of 1916, engaged in recruiting for the Second West Virginia Regiment, on duty on the Mexican border. On March 28, 1917, the Company was ordered to mobilize
at Martinsburg and, on April 2, joined the Regiment in the mobilization camp at Camp Cornwall, Fairmont, West Virginia. Promoted to Captain and assigned to command of Company F, First West Virginia National
Guard; June 1, 1917, left Camp Cornwall and moved to Camp Shelby, Mississippi; September 18, 1917, assigned to command of Company B, Motor Battalion 113th Ammunition Train; embarked for France, October 5,
1918, and landed there October 11. Left for the United States July 20, 1919, landing in New York City July 31; mustered out of service August 21, 1919. Accepted a position of Superintendent of Mails in the
Martinsburg Post Office, June 1, 1920.
Miss Edna Fellers, a niece of Mr. Whitmore�s, won the first prize for the best essay, on the subject �Stonewall Jackson� in a contest sponsored by the local chapter of the U.D.C. in January 1927.
The contestants were from Martinsburg High School and Saint Joseph�s Catholic School.

George F. WHITMORE was a Corporal in Company M, Second Regiment West Virginia Volunteer Infantry in the Spanish-American War. In June 1909, helped to organize Company F,
First Regiment West Virginia National Guard, stationed at Martinsburg, consisting of all Berkeley County men. Served as First Sergeant in this Company from June 1909 to May 1911, then commissioned as Second Lieutenant.
Served in Paint Creek and Cabin Creek labor trouble.
