Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of Collins Unseld THORNBURG


         Collins Unseld THORNBURG was born in Berkeley County, West Virginia, January 16, 1835, the son of Thomas and Maria (Myers) Thornburg. His father was born in Jefferson County, West Virginia in 1793 and died in 1861; his mother was born in Pennsylvania in 1804 and died in 1873. One of Collins� brothers, Isaac N. Thornburg, enlisted as a private in the war between the states and served three years in the 1st Maryland Cavalry.

         On June 19, 1865, where Huntington, West Virginia is now, Collins U. Thornburg married Leonora Miller, who was born in Carrol County, Missouri, September 12, 1840. Her parents were Henry H. and Eliza A. (Chapman) Miller, and were residents of Covington, Kentucky. Children born to Collins and Leonora Thornburg were Harry C. Thornburg, March 24, 1866-?; Charles M. Thornburg, December 26, 1867-?; Lida Maria Thornburg, October 23, 1869-?; Edgar H. Thornburg, September 2, 1872-?; Francis B. Thornburg, December 30, 1877-?; and Leonora C. Thornburg, December 27, 1880-?.

         Mr. Thornburg held many positions: a district magistrate, president of the county court from 1877-1881; justice of the peace; and school teacher. He and his family lived at Darkesville, Arden district, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
