He was elected Clerk of the County Court of Berkeley County in 1829 and served until 1833. In 1832, he was appointed Clerk of the Supreme Court of Law and
Chancery by Judge Richard Parker for the County of Berkeley. John Strother built a hotel at Berkeley Springs in 1845; fought in the Union Army in the Civil War; had a son in the Union Army,
as well; died at Berkeley Springs January 16, 1862, and buried at Martinsburg with Masonic and military honors.

John STROTHER was born in Berkeley County, Virginia, November 18, 1792, son of Benjamin Strother; at 13, he became Deputy Clerk of the County Court and was connected with the clerkship for 45 years.
He served in the defense of Norfolk in the War of 1812 with Captain Faulkner�s company of artillery with the rank of Second Lieutenant; afterward he was appointed Lieutenant of the 12th
Infantry, in camp at Fredericksburg, Virginia. He resigned his commission in the State Company and was succeeded by Edward Colston, also of Berkeley County; joined his regiment on the
Canadian border under Wilkenson, against Montreal and at Chrisler�s Field, promoted to Adjutant of the Regiment. After the war, he returned to Martinsburg and married Elizabeth Pendleton,
daughter of Philip Pendleton, Esq.
