On November 27, 1872, L.W. Brown Smals and Laura V. Baker, born in Berkeley County September 18, 1850 and the daughter of N.F. and Mary (Grush) Baker, were married. Miss Baker�s parents had moved to the county March 15, 1846.
The couple had the following children: Rader B. Smals, February 3, 1874-?: William B. Smals, May 7, 1876-?; and Harry E. Smals, September 17, 1880-?.

L.W. Brown SMALS, the son of John R. and Susan (Dinkle) Smals, was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, November 17, 1849. He moved to the Falling Waters district of Berkeley County in November 1873 and his parents followed in March 1878.
Mr. Smals moulded, burned brick and built the first brick house in Needmore, a village located near the Potomac River and nearly opposite the city of Williamsport, Maryland. During the years, 1873-75, he and his brothers cleared the ground on which the village was built.
He was a mason and brick-moulder in the Falling Waters District, with a mailing address of Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland. Note: The biography did not say in which state Needmore was.
