When his time of enlistment had expired he returned to Berkeley County and organized a new company which became part of the Virginia Rifle Regiment, Captain Hugh Stephenson in command. He was sent to the
northern section in 1776, at Bergen Point, opposite New York, Colonel Rawlings in command, Colonel Stephenson having died. For three days, from November 12-14, there was severe skirmishing with the enemy at King�s Ridge. On November 16,
his company was engaged in action in which Colonel Rawlings and Major Williams were severely wounded and had to be removed from the field and the command fell to him. Finding himself overwhelmed by superior numbers, he slowly retired
to Fort Washington, half a mile distant, where all were captured and made prisoners. Captain Shepherd remained a prisoner there for nearly a year, was released and then returned home. Captain Shepherd never entered the Colonial service again.
He died September 7, 1822, at 69 years old.

Captain Abraham SHEPHERD volunteered in the Berkeley Company raised by Captain Hugh Stephenson for the Revolutionary War. He was elected Lieutenant in place of Lieutenant Thomas, who declined the commission.
He marched to Boston in July 1775 and served one year with that company.
