Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of George Smith ROUSH


         George Smith ROUSH was born in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia on March 30, 1841, a son of George and Margaret Roush, who always lived in Berkeley County. When the Civil war started, George S. Roush was a member of the Berkeley county company of cavalry that was ordered into active service in the Confederate army. After six weeks, he hired a substitute and returned home since his mother was left alone. Charles, brother of George Smith Roush, was a soldier during the same war, serving in the 1st Virginia Cavalry under General �Jeb� Stuart. Charles was wounded in a skirmish near Winchester.

         At the home of the bride�s father in Berkeley County, on October 2, 1866, George Smith Roush and Anmi Elizabeth Mong were married. The bride was born in Berkeley County June 30, 1845, a daughter of William H. and Mary C. Mong. The children of George Smith and Anmi Elizabeth were Carrie M. Roush, July 16, 1867-?; W. Arlington Roush, November 2, 1870-?; and Johnnie W. Roush, July 24, 1873-?.

         George Smith Roush was engaged in agricultural pursuits at Martinsburg in the Arden district, principally as a farmer and dairyman and, in January 1881, was made a director of the Peoples National Bank of Martinsburg.
