On October 23, 1866, near Leetown, Jefferson County, West Virginia, Martin L. Payne and Mary Catherine Dillon, the daughter of David and Elizabeth (Buckston) Dillen, were married. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland,
on November 21, 1838, and moved with her family to Berkeley County in 1855. They had a son, John David Payne, on July 29, 1872-?.
Martin Long Payne was engaged in farming, threshing, lumber and stock-dealing in the Mill Creek district, and received his mail at Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

Martin Long PAYNE, son of John Martin and Mary Davenport (Long) Payne, natives of Berkeley County, was born in that county April 19, 1840. The Paynes, of which there were seven brothers, were large landholders in the
vicinity of the Mill Creek district for a number of years. Martin L. Payne was commissioned a lieutenant in the Virginia militia in 1859 and entered the Confederate army May 1, 1861, serving in Company B, 1st Virginia Cavalry until July 1, 1865.
He was wounded twice and on April 3, 1865, captured by Federal troops and sent to Elmira, New York, on May 12, 1865, where he was paroled at the close of the Civil war.
