The NOLL family dates back to the reign of Henry VIII of England. At that time, the name was written Knoll, later as Knollys, Noel and Nolle, and were large landholders in England. During the reign of
Queen Mary, on account of the family adhering to the Church of England, the property of the four brothers was confiscated by the Crown and two of them sent to the block, the other two escaping to France. In the U.S., their
case was almost as bad as it was in England and the family was reduced to poverty and compelled to continually keep in hiding. One of the sons returned to England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and was given a small share
of the once princely estate. He married there, raised a family and one of his grandsons migrated to Virginia in the good ship �Due Return� on one of her voyages to America. The name was changed to Noll and from there one of
the sons migrated to Berkeley County and settled at the headwaters of the Tuscarora � his name was Gottleib Noll.

William T. NOLL was a member of Company B, First Regiment, Virginia Cavalry, Confederate Army. He entered as Second Lieutenant at the time of its organization (1860) and was afterwards promoted
to First Lieutenant; he was wounded at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863; served throughout the war. He was Deputy Sheriff for Berkeley County under Sheriff Robert H. Lamon.
