Abstracts from early newspaper articles with a connection to Berkeley County, Virginia/West Virginia and what was later referred to as the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Berkeley County was created by an act of the House of Burgesses and formed from the northern third of Frederick County, Virginia, in 1772. On January 8, 1801, Jefferson County was formed from Berkeley County's eastern section, and on February 9, 1820, Morgan County was formed from Berkeley's western section.

RACEY, Mrs. Minnie, wife of Garfield RACEY, died at her home in Blairton, West Virginia (Berkeley County) Tuesday morning. Funeral services were Thursday at the Blairton U.B. Church, with burial at Knoxville, Maryland. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. C.L. RUSSELL, Brunswick, Maryland, and Mrs. Alexander HOBBS, McKeespot, Pennsylvania; and three brothers, Wilson GREENFIELD, Hagerstown, Maryland, John, Martinsburg, and Martin, Brunswick. NOTE: The article did not give last names for the last two brothers and it didn�t give Mrs. RACEY�s maiden name, so it can�t be presumed their names are the same as brother Wilson. RAINES, Albert, 60, living alone in a suburb of Martinsburg, was found dead last night. Beside him was a bottle half filled with moonshine, and on his person was a bank book that showed deposits of $2,000, $100 in cash, and a will that specified the money be used for his funeral and a burial place. RAMEY, Luther Louis, 11, had wrapped himself in crepe paper to participate in the festive events of the annual apple harvest, but that paper was the cause of his death this morning in a local hospital. The paper caught fire yesterday when he opened a stove door at the home of his mother, Mrs. Urene RAMEY of Martinsburg, and he succumbed to those injuries today — CDM 13 Nov 1938.

RAMSBERG, C.A., a farmer, alleged that his life had been threatened by a 13-year-old youth if he did not put $250 in $1 bills in a stone pile near the boy's home. REAVER, Pauline, 18, one of three missing girls from the Gettysburg and Littlestown, Pennsylvania, area, two of which escaped from Sleighton Farms, a correctional institute near Philadelphia, has been found working at a hosiery mill in Martinsburg under the name of Katherine DAVIS. Corporal KASPARVICH of the local sub-station of state police and Miss E. GODWIN, probation officer, went to Martinsburg Thursday afternoon and found Miss REAVER working under the assumed name. On July 17, state and local police were asked to be on the lookout for Miss REAVER and Evelyn PEFFER of Littlestown, who had escaped from the Sleighton Farms institution and were reported to be heading for Gettysburg. State police learned Miss REAVER had been at her home the day before he was notified of her escape and, after getting some clothing, had induced her younger sister, Edna, 15, to leave with her. Two days later, information was received that three girls were seen in Biglerville, Pennsylvania, and they had accepted a ride in a sport roadster. They were overheard to say they wanted to reach Harrisburg and one of the three wanted to go to her former home in Lewistown (no state listed). Edna REAVER returned to her home a week later. She and her sister went to Gettysburg together after the third member, Evelyn PEFFER, was taken into custody by the chief of police of Lewistown and returned to Sleighton Farms. After finding Pauline REAVER, Miss GODWIN escorted her back to Sleighton Farms on Thursday evening — GT 16 Aug 1929.

RECCI, Vincenzo, the Italian quarryman accused of attacking the little daughter of Pola Pola at the big spring quarry near Martinsburg on August 15, was still at large last night, but the officers searching believe his capture is imminent. RECCI is said to be a dangerous man and is armed with a big revolver. The search for him is under the direction of Prosecuting Attorney DOWNEY, who has had four posses and several automobiles filled with armed deputies searching every likely hiding place in the area — WP 17 Aug 1913.

REED, Mrs. Ann, widow of the late James F. REED and the oldest lady in Martinsburg, died at her home, corner of South Queen and Stephens streets, today following an acute illness of two weeks. She was 81. She is believed to have the greatest number of relatives by blood and marriage as any person in this section of the state. Surviving are six of her 10 children, Mrs. Charles BLAKE, Mrs. Samuel J. THOMPSON, Mrs. Newton C. UNDERDONK, Mrs. Nannie SLOAN, Mrs. Edward HOLLIS and Miss Margaret REED, all of Martinsburg, 25 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, most of them living in Martinsburg — ET 27 Jan 1905.

They refused on account of his alleged insulting remarks, upon which he drew his gun. REISINGER, W.R., a Berkeley Springs filling station owner, wounded Mitchell HARRISON, 24-year-old Berkeley Springs man when HARRISON and Carl PURNELL, 20, also of Berkeley Springs, attempted to burglarize the station. REISINGER told officers he had been sleeping in the building because of previous burglaries and when he heard a window crash, he fired his shotgun. HARRISON�s arm was on the window sill; he is in a Martinsburg hospital. PURNELL was arrested as an accessory. Police said both men confessed — CDM 12 Apr 1933.

RENO, Paul, 35, suffered a �probable skull fracture� and Joseph Marker, 23, suffered from internal injuries when an auto-truck collision in Winchester sent both Martinsburg men to the hospital — CDM 22 Mar 1940.
RENTCH, Anna Belle, wife of G. William RENTCH, died at her home in Martinsburg on September 22. She was 55 and died of Bright's disease. A native of Berkeley County, she was the daughter of the late William SMITH of Hedgesville. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. W.H.H. RENTCH, John Noll, city treasurer of Martinsburg and a well-known businessman of the city, died early yesterday morning of heart failure. A native of Berkeley County and a son of the late Lawrence RENTCH, he was 67 years old. For many years he was a prominent Democratic politician. RICE, Lacy I. and Charles E. BEARD, delegates-elect of Berkeley County, will support toll-free bridges over the Potomac River spans connecting West Virginia and Maryland at Williamsport, Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry. An active program toward this end has been launched by Delegate U.S. MARTIN of Jefferson County. The plans calls for purchase or condemnation of the existing toll bridges or construction of other bridges near the present ones, with the approaches from the State roads to be diverted to the new bridges if the latter have to be built. The two delegates also announced the support of a plan to have state automobile licenses distributed through county agencies instead of exclusively from State headquarters at Charleston. They would favor a small license fee to care for the extra labor entailed on the distributing agency — NEWS 31 Dec 1928.

RIDDLE, Mrs. H.A. of West Alexandria, Virginia, the former Miss HUNTER of Martinsburg, was among those attending the seventh annual McILHENNY-KING family reunion at the Great Conowago Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania last Saturday — GC 4 Nov 1916.
RIDDLE, Mrs. H.A., the former Miss HUNTER of Martinsburg, died suddenly last Thursday at the family�s summer home, �Aircastle,� Caledonia, Pennsylvania. She had been in ill health, but her death was �very unexpected. During the night she suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she did not recover.� She was more than 70 years old and has been a resident of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania for about 40 years, moving there from Martinsburg with her husband when he assumed duties as General Passenger Agent of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. RITENOUR, LeRoy, manager of a tire store in Martinsburg, suffered burns and shock May 18 and several passersby narrowly escaped injury when a violent explosion wrecked the storeroom of the store. A large plate glass window of the store was shattered and nearly struck the pedestrians. RITENOUR, who had been cleaning a speed board with gasoline in the rear of the building, said the explosion occurred immediately after he had started the motor for testing. Firemen extinguished the flames and RITENOUR was moved to a hospital — CDM 19 May 1940.

ROBINSON, J. Norris, Dr., 30, who for five years was a clerk in the central office bureau of the Washington , D.C. Metropolitan police department, died Thursday at his home in Martinsburg; his body will be brought to Washington today for an afternoon burial in Glenwood Cemetery. Members of the police department will be pallbearers. While Dr. ROBINSON was in Washington, he studied dentistry at George Washington University and graduated from there two years ago as honor man in his class. He immediately opened an office, while at the same time continued to hold his position with the police department. A short while after undertaking to practice the profession he had adopted, he contracted tuberculosis. Though the ravages of the disease caused him to stop work, he was maintained in his clerkship until April last when he went to Martinsburg to the home of his parents in an effort to regain his health. NOLL, former prosecuting attorney of Berkeley County, under indictment along with three others of extortion charges. The motion was based on an affidavit by Dr. James A. DUFF declaring NOLL "was suffering from paresis and was not able to distinguish between right and wrong." The affidavit further said NOLL could not appreciate the nature of charges against him if sent to trial and by an agreement will enter a sanitarium for treatment under the jurisdiction of the court. RUTHERFORD, Arthur, young son of Mrs. Florence Rutherford of Martinsburg, was killed instantly by electrocution yesterday by grasping a live electric light wire with his bare hand. The wire, charged with a current of 2,400 volts, had been blown down during the storm last night and the boy picked it up at a point where the insulation had been worn off — WP 24 May 1915.

RUTHERFORD, Mr. and Mrs. George W. were found dead and their son John RUTHERFORD was found unconscious on the floor of their bedroom today when a police officer broke down the door of their home in Martinsburg. Their home was filled with gas from a broken main in the street and it is believed John tried to rescue his parents when he was overcome with the gas. Mrs. Anna GALLAHER and granddaughter Miss Mildred SHALL who occupy the other side of the double house, were unconscious, but both were revived and out of danger. John is expected to survive. Mr. RUTHERFORD, 72, was a retired B&O railroad conductor and a member of a well-known family. Mrs. RUTHERFORD was 68. Two sons and two daughters survive the couple — FP 6 Apr 1914.

RUTLEDGE, Miss Clara E., eldest daughter of William RUTLEDGE, proprietor of the Continental Hotel of Martinsburg, and Mr. John W. FELDMAN, Cumberland Valley railroad agent at Hagerstown, Maryland, were married yesterday in the First Lutheran Church of Martinsburg by Rev. Charles TRUMP. Messrs. Adrian C. NADENBOUSCH and Edward RUTLEDGE, both of Martinsburg, and Clinton B. GROVE and John S. KAUSLER, both of Hagerstown, Maryland, were ushers, and Misses Willie GROVE and Ada RODRICK, both of Martinsburg, were maids of honor. RUTLEDGE, Edward, a native of Hagerstown, Maryland, but a resident of Martinsburg most of his life, died yesterday. He was 69 and had been a banker in the area from 1882 until his retirement three years ago. His funeral will be tomorrow. Mr. RUTLEDGE is survived by his widow and two children — CDM 19 Apr 1938.

RUTLEDGE, Mamie of Martinsburg attended the recent wedding in Greencastle, Maryland of Emma KLINEFELTER, daughter of the Rev. Frederick KLINEFELTER, Lutheran pastor, to Ellis S. LEWIS, businessman of New York — HTL 21 Jun 1894.
RUTLEDGE, William of Martinsburg, a hotel keeper, notified David HORST, a liveryman in Hagerstown, Maryland, that he might possibly know the man HORST was looking for in connection with the theft of a horse. Some time ago, HORST lost a horse by hiring it to a stranger who never came back. He notified the hotel owner in Martinsburg, as well as others, about this theft and Mr. RUTLEDGE said he had observed a man by the name of R.H. CLUB, giving his address of Rockville, who arrived at the hotel and inquired of the proprietor if he could put up a horse there. Even though he was told he could, the man never brought the horse and that, combined with other circumstances, made Mr. RUTLEDGE suspicious. The sheriff of Berkeley County visited the man's room at the hotel and found several letters that led him to believe the man's "life had not been altogether free from suspicion and lawlessness in the past." A revolver was found. Mr. HORST was called and the man confessed he was the one who never returned the animal and told the liveryman where he traded or sold the animal. The resolutions strongly endorsed the national and state administrations, the new tax laws and the candidacy of U.S. Senator Stephen B. ELKINS for reelection and condemned the Democratic court for extravagance and mismanagement. RYNEAL, George Jr., a farmer, Washington, D.C. merchant and now a resident of Martinsburg, has donated $1,000 to the fire department of the latter city for the betterment of the department — ET 5 Jan 1906.
RYNEAL, George Jr., 82, one of the wealthiest and most prominent citizens of Martinsburg, died at his home there yesterday afternoon following a long illness. He conducted an art supply store in Washington, D.C. for many years and "amassed a fortune out of this business." He was "the father of the present Martinsburg fire department" and was the owner of Honeywood farm in Berkeley County, one of the most valuable estates in that area of West Virginia. He was unmarried and his fortune will go to several nieces and nephews — WP 1 Dec 1917.
