Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of James D. MILLER


         James D. MILLER, a son of William and Sarah (Hensel) Miller, was born in Berkeley County May 22, 1814. His father was a native of that county and his mother was born in Jefferson County, West Virginia. James Miller was of German and Irish descent, his paternal grandfather having been from Ireland and his mother�s father from Germany. Both were pioneer settlers of Berkeley County. His father, William, was in the cavalry service in the War of 1812.

         On March 29, 1838, James D. Miller married Elizabeth Ramsburg, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Dust) Ramsburg, who emigrated to Berkeley County from Frederick County, Maryland, about 1801. Elizabeth was born in Berkeley County (no date given). James and Elizabeth Miller had the following children: George S. Miller, February 2, 1839-?, lived in Jefferson County; Sarah E. Miller, October 25, 1840-?; William H. Miller, October 26, 1842-before 1884; David H. Miller, November 16, 1844-?; Mary Ann Miller, April 18, 1847-?; Nancy Hester Miller, September 9, 1849-?; Eliza R. Miller, January 23, 1852-?; Emma Virginia, July 11, 1854-?; James D. Miller, March 15, 1859-?; and John Miller, June 14, 1862-?. Mrs. Miller was of German descent, her family among the early settlers of Maryland and of Jefferson County, West Virginia.

         James Miller was a farmer in the Opequon district, Bedington, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
