Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of Jacob MILLER


         Jacob MILLER was born in Berkeley County, West Virginia, on October 13, 1815, a son of Samuel and Mary (Mumma) Miller. His father, Samuel, was one of the pioneer settlers of Western Maryland and he moved to Berkeley County three years before Jacob was born, in 1812.

         On January 8, 1839, Jacob Miller and Evalina Mason were married. Their children were: Mary Virginia (Miller) Billmyre, September 13, 1840-December 5, 1861; Anna R. Miller, September 26, 1842-August 3, 1862; James M. Miller, February 25, 1845-May 16, 1860; Samuel Miller, October 25, 1847-?, lived in the Arden district of Berkeley County; Ella Rose Miller, June 15, 1850-February 18, 1872; and Sarah E. (Miller) VanMeter, March 16, 1853-?, lived in the county. Mr. Miller was married again, in Washington County, Maryland, on January 28, 1856, to Eliza (Mason) Rush, daughter of James and Mary (Rush) Mason, natives of Berkeley County. Eliza was born January 3, 1812. Jacob and Eliza Miller were the parents of Robert Seaton Miller, September 9, 1858-?.

         Jacob Rush, a son of Eliza Miller, served in the Confederate army. James Billmyre, husband of Mr. Miller�s eldest daughter, Mary Virginia, was also in the Confederate army and held the rank of lieutenant. James Mason, a brother of Eliza Miller also served in the same army, and James Mason, her father, was a captain in the war of 1812. Mrs. Miller is descended from the Rush family, connected to the early history of Berkeley County.

         Jacob Miller served as the receiver of Berkeley County court from 1874 until 1880 and was elected member of that court in October 1880, with his term expiring in 1884. He was a farmer in the Opequon district, with a mailing address of Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
