Charles H. Miller was instrumental in getting additional territory added to Martinsburg through the Martinsburg Mining, Manufacturing and Improvement Company, of which firm he was one of the chief promoters.

Charles H. MILLER, the son of the pioneer apple grower of Berkeley County — W.S. Miller — was elected Assessor and Sheriff of that county. He, along with other sons of W.S.,
planted numerous orchards throughout the county. He organized a cannery company and began business on Winchester Avenue, in northwest Martinsburg, canning corn, beans, tomatoes, peaches, etc. The establishment
prospered until destroyed by fire. It was the forerunner of the Rockwell-Lovet Cannery Company, later the Gatrell-Yearick Company, ice plant and cold storage, situated in southwest Martinsburg.
