Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of Dr. Richard McSHERRY


         Richard McSHERRY, M.D., was born at �Retirement,� a homestead near Leetown, then Berkeley County, Virginia, on May 28, 1792, the son of Richard and Anastatia McSherry. He received his education at Fredericktown Academy, Frederick, Maryland; and at George College, Washington, D.C.; studied medicine under Dr. Samuel J. Creamer, a physician at Charles Town; and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Medicine, 1816.

         He joined a company from Jefferson County in the War of 1812, and following the death of the medical officer of the company was commissioned in his place and served as a surgeon in the army until the end of the war. He practiced at Martinsburg, Berkeley County, until 1871 when he retired.

         In January 1817, Richard McSherry married Miss Ann C. King, daughter of George King of Georgetown.
