On February 24, 1876, in Greencastle, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Joseph Landis and Rebecca Ripple, were married. She was the daughter of William and Ellender (Williams) Ripple, early settlers of Berkeley County (March 1827), and was born August 21, 1845.
Joseph Landis was a farmer, with a post office address of Falling Waters, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

Joseph LANDIS was a native of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, where he was born July 1, 1848. He moved to Berkeley County in April 1866 and settled in the Falling Waters district. His parents, John and Elizabeth (Miller) Landis,
were married in Lebanon, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, March 5, 1835. His father was born March 18, 1810 and his mother, March 5, 1816. They moved to Berkeley County in 1866. Andrew Landis and Samuel Landis, brothers of Joseph, were soldiers in the
Union army during the Civil war. Andrew enlisted in Company C, 7th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, served three years, re-enlisted, and was taken prisoner at the battle of the Wilderness. He was sent to Andersonville and then to Florence, South Carolina,
where he died while on his way from the station to the prison.
