          Charles Denton JACK, born March 8, 1882, near Marlowe, West Virginia, died Sept. 30, 1940, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and is buried in Spring Mills Cemetery. He was identified with law enforcement circles in Martinsburg beginning 1921-24 when he served as jailer and deputy sheriff under William Dean. During 1925-36, he served as a state prohibition officer and in 1926-28 was a federal prohibition agent, principally in the Northern District of West Virginia. In 1929, Charles Jack was elected constable for the Martinsburg district. He served in that post until November 1938 when Berkeley County court named him Justice of the Peace to succeed C. Ward Nicklan, who died several weeks earlier.

         At the time of his death in 1940, Mr. Jack was the nominee of the Republican party to succeed himself. Charles Denton Jack was the only son of Jeremiah and Mary K. Jack. He married the widow Emilie Ida nee Stoecker Beitzen of Martinsburg and adopted her two sons, Milton and Eugene.
