Nicholas Hoffman, born in Berkeley County October 6, 1776, married Rachel Shonk and settled in Washington County, Maryland, where they raised three children: Elizabeth Hoffman, January 26, 1797-?; Susan Hoffman, June 9, 1799-?; and Christiancy Hoffman,
October 29, 1802. Elizabeth married Henry Miller and settled in Washington County, Maryland; Susan married Henry Shaff and lived in Berkeley County; and Christiancy married Jacob Hoffman, lived in Berkeley County and later moved to Montgomery County, Ohio. Jacob and Christiancy had
eight children, in addition to M.J.C. Hoffman: John N. Hoffman, January 21, 1824-?; Jacob V. Hoffman, March 20, 1829-?; Phlip C. Hoffman, February 18, 1832-?; Ann M. Hoffman, August 13, 1834-?; Catherine E. Hoffman, March 3, 1837-?; George M. Hoffman, January 4, 1840-?; Abraham L. Hoffman,
May 9, 1842-before 1884; and Elizabeth Hoffman, January 28, 1845-?. All of the living children lived �in the west.�
In 1851, M.J.C. Hoffman and Nancy E. Barrett, born in Berkeley County in 1827, were married in Martinsburg, the Rev. D.G. Bargonier, Reform Church, officiating. They had two children: Catherine A. Hoffman, December 7, 1857-before 1884; and Mary E. Hoffman, June 29, 1859-?.
Nancy Barrett was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Raney) Barrett, also natives of Berkeley County.
M.J.C. Hoffman�s farm was in the Gerrardstown district at Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, West Virginia. He began his working career as a carpenter and builder, but when, by industry and economy he obtained his farm, he turned his attention to cultivation.

M.J.C. HOFFMAN was born in Ohio County, West Virginia, November 11, 1826, his parents settling that same year in Montgomery County, Ohio, and remaining there until 1847 when M.J.C. Hoffman moved to Berkeley County. Both of his parents, Jacob Hoffman
and Christiancy/Christancy (Hoffman) Hoffman were descendants of the Hoffman family, one of the pioneers of Berkeley County and the following is the genealogy of the family:
