Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Robert A. HIETT


         Robert A. HIETT was born in Berkeley County, West Virginia, October 25, 1850, son of Samuel P. and Susan (Dehaven) Hiett. Samuel Hiett was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia, in 1814, and Susan Dehaven was a native of Frederick County, Virginia, born December 6, 1849. Their children, in addition to Robert A., were Sarah L. Hiett, October 18, 1853-?), and F. Virginia Hiett, September 14, 1856-?). Sarah L. married T.F. Horner and F. Virginia married W.F. Mason. Robert Hiett�s ancestors were among the pioneer settlers of Berkeley County.

         Robert Hiett was a builder and manufacturer; his business, located at Shanghai, Berkeley County, was called Kitchen, Hiett & Co. Their market was Philadelphia, Boston and other northern cities. The Hiett family also lives at Shanghai, Gerrardstown district, Berkeley County, West Virginia.

         On December 10, 1878, Robert A. Hiett and Sally A. Powell, born March 10, 1856 in Frederick County, Maryland, were married at Shanghai. They had two children: Ada C. Hiett, September 28, 1879-?; and Lula V. Hiett, September 24, 1881. Mrs. Hiett�s parents, George D. and Susan M. (Perrell) Powell, moved to Berkeley County in 1867.
