Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of P.H. HENSELL


         P.H. HENSELL was born in Berkeley County, West Virginia September 13, 1831, son of William J. and Catherine (Hoke) Hensell. His mother had died by 1884 and his father was living in Martinsburg, Berkeley County at that time.

         Mr. Hensell first married Susan R. Crowl and they had the following children: John R. Hensell, Mary C. Hensell, William J. Hensell, Henry H. Hensell, Charles Hensell, and Scott Hensell. In May 1875, in Pennsylvania, he and Nancy C. Harbaugh were married. She was born in Frederick County, Maryland, in 1850, and her parents were George and Matilda (Shover) Harbaugh. By 1884, her father was deceased and her mother lived in Kansas. Children born to P.H. and Nancy Hensell were George Lawrence Hensell, April 1877-?; Franklin Morris Hensell, May 1879-?; and Susan M. Hensell, May 1881-?.

         P.H. Hensell was registrar for four years following the Civil War, where he served three years in the Union army in the 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry under Colonel Speer; he was once wounded slightly. He was a farmer in the Opequon district, with a post office address of Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
