Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of William J. HARRISON


         William J. HARRISON was born December 1, 1823, in Berkeley County, West Virginia, a son of Samuel and Elizabeth (French) Harrison, both natives of that county and both deceased by 1884.

         On February 13, 1856, in Berkeley County, William Harrison and Elizabeth S. Cox were married. She was born February 10, 1835, also in that county, and was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Ward) Cox, natives of that county. By 1884, her mother was deceased. William and Elizabeth Harrison had the following children: Samuel S. Harrison, March 21, 1857-?; Charles William Harrison, September 1, 1858-?, lived in Indiana; Fannie B. Harrison, April 19, 1860-July 10, 1869; Mary Virginia Harrison, January 20, 1862-?; Robert Lee Harrison, January 30, 1864-?; Sarah C. Harrison, October 24, 1865-?; James B. Harrison, April 15, 1868; and Armand E. Harrison, January 21, 1871-?. Elizabeth Harrison died August 26, 1871.

         William Harrison was appointed steward of the Berkeley County almshouse March 22, 1858 and served seven successive terms. He was a farmer in the Falling Waters district, with a mailing address of Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
