Lewis DeWitt GERHARDT was a graduate of Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with an A.M. degree. He was an attorney and practice law in
Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, until 1897 when he was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court of that county, a position he still held in 1928. He was director of the Martinsburg
City Band for eight years. In 1897 he married Miss Ellen S. Rebert of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; they had three sons:
Henri K. GERHARDT, deceased before 1928;
L. Dewitt GERHARDT Jr., deputy Clerk of the Circuit Court of Berkeley County for six years; a World War I veteran, serving in the A.E.F. France as Lieutenant G2 (Training) G.H.Q; and
William R. GERHARDT, a graduate of West Point Military Academy, Captain in the regular Army, serving at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1928.

William GERHARDT moved to Berkeley County, West Virginia, in 1863. He was a minister of the Lutheran Church and the principal of John Street School
when all the children of school age in Martinsburg were gathered in one building at the site of John Street School. He continued in that capacity until the Martinsburg Grammar
School was established, which was the forerunner of the old high school, and he was the first principal. He lived to the age of 100 years and four months and was the oldest Odd
Fellow in West Virginia at the time of his death. He was married to Lucinda Riley and they had a son, Lewis DeWitt Gerhardt.
