Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Jacob M. FRENCH


         Jacob M. FRENCH was born in the Hedgesville district of Berkeley County on January 29, 1828. His parents were John French, who died in 1837 at 41, and Sarah (Myers) French, who died in 1866 at 63. Jacob�s grandfather, Jacob French, emigrated from Germany and was one of the early settlers in Berkeley County. In 1773, he built a log cabin, which was still being used in 1884. Jacob Myers, an uncle of Mr. French, served in the War of 1812.

         Jacob M. French and Mary C. Ellis, daughter of John and Eliza (Jacques) Ellis, were married May 24, 1855. Mary was born in Berkeley County on November 16, 1838. They had one daughter, Sallie E. French, March 28, 1850-?, who married John A. Rickard, December 2, 1879. John and Sallie Rickard also have a daughter, Lina Rickard, January 23, 1882-?, and the Rickards lived at home with Sallie�s parents.

         Living near Falling Waters Church, in the Hedgesville District, North Mountain, Berkeley County, West Virginia, Jacob French was a farmer.
