In 1874, Henry Clay Evans married Anna Bell Barney, who was born in Ganotown,
Berkeley County, in 1860. She was the daughter of William and Hannah (Stuckey) Barney, who were natives of
that county.
Henry Clay and Anna Bell had the following children: Jacob W. Evans, January 24,
1875-?; Anna E. Evans, August 2-1876-before 1884; Edith May Evans, February 7, 1878-December 27, 1959, died
in Ewing Township, Mercer, New Jersey; and Henry A., June 8, 1880-?. The Evans family lived in Berkeley
County until 1867, moved to Jefferson County and, in 1869, Mr. Evans was in teaching; in 1880, they returned
to Berkeley County where Mr. Evans was in farming and merchandising, was appointed notary public in 1870, a
nd was inspector of elections for two years. The family lived in Ganotown, Gerrardstown district, Berkeley
County, West Virginia.

Henry Clay EVANS was born in Berkeley County, West Virginia in 1844. He was the son
of Jacob Vanmeter and Eliza (Poisal) Walker Evans. One of Mr. Evan�s ancestors, Evan Evans, emigrated to this
country from Wales in 1735, settling near what is now Martinsburg, the county seat of Berkeley County. He was
one of the first 12 white men settling west of the Blue Ridge and had a 1,000-acre grant of land from George
II. Henry Clay�s father, Jacob V. Evans, was born in Berkeley County in 1807 and married Mrs. Walker in 1841.
They had four children: Clara V. Evans, Henry C. Evans, Mary S. Evans, and the fourth child who died in
infancy.
