Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Martin L. DORN


         Martin L. DORN, son of Conrad and Margaret A. (White) Dorn, was born in Albany, New York, on August 23, 1830. His parents were both deceased by 1884. He was first married in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, on October 10, 1850, to Rebecca King, who died May 29, 1865. The children of that marriage were: John Dorn, who lived in Jefferson County, West Virginia; Laura K. Down and Emma Down, who both lived in Williamsport, Maryland; and Anna Rebecca Dorn, Martin L. Dorn, Elizabeth Dorn, Charles W. Dorn and Etta M. Dorn, all of whom lived in Martinsburg.

         Martin Dorn was a soldier in the Civil war, serving 23 months in Cole�s Cavalry and participating in all the engagements of his command. He was also a soldier in the Mexican war, serving two years under General Scott. While engaged in the battle of Chepultepec, he received a lance thrust to his neck.

         On October 25, 1866, in Clear Springs, West Virginia, Martin Dorn was married to the daughter of Alexander and Susanna (Mesner) Robinson (his wife�s name was not listed), who were residents of Washington County, Maryland, at the time of their daughter�s birth, but moved to Berkeley County in 1876. They had six children: Maggie Dorn, Harry Dorn, Raymond Dorn, Samuel Dorn, Edward Dorn, and Oscar Dorn.

         Martin L. Dorn was in the tailoring business in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
