Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of Harry S. CUSHWA

Harry S. CUSHWA was a descendant of John GUSHWA (CUSHWA), Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Jonathan Cushwa settled on Tuscarora Creek. One of his sons, Barnet Cushwa, and an uncle of H.S. Cushwa was nominated for Sheriff on the Democratic ticket. The election was very close, Harry Cushwa receiving the majority of the votes. The election was contested before the County Court, which decided that no one was elected; another election was held, and Mr. Cushwa received 67 votes majority. This election was also contested on the charge of irregularity, but cholera became an epidemic before the court could convene, and the office was given to Harry Cushwa.

At the age of 18, Harry S. Cushwa formed a partnership with his brother, Harvey C. Cushwa, as carpenters and contractors. Later they opened a hardware store under the firm name of H.T. Cushwa & Bro. After the death of Harvey in 1902, Harry continued the hardware business in his own name for 40 years.
