Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Joseph B. CROWL


         Joseph B. CROWL, a son of John and Elizabeth (Carver) Crowl, was born in Jefferson County, West Virginia, November 18, 1838. Joseph B. was a soldier in the Civil war, enlisting February 5, 1864 in the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry, with Major-General Kephard commander of the brigade and General Custer the division. He participated in the battles of Winchester, Cedar Creek and the battle of Lynchburg under General Crook�s command.

         On March 5, 1868, in Berkeley County, he married Hannah E. Lowery, born in that county on September 15, 1850, the daughter of Samuel S. and Sarah C. (Manor) Lowery, also residents of Berkeley County. Joseph B. and Hannah E. Crowl had six children: Smith L. Crowl, March 1, 1869-?; Sarah C. Crowl, November 10, 1870-?; John E. Crowl, November 20, 1873-?; Wilber S. Crowl, October 21, 1876-?; Charles L. Crowl, April 26, 1878-?; and Bessie B. Crowl, August 3, 1880-?.

         Joseph B. Crowl was a farmer in the Arden District, with a post office address of Martinsburg, Berkeley County.
