Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of William COLE


         William COLE was born in Berkeley County July 13, 1813 and, at the time of his death lived in the Falling Waters district, Berkeley County, West Virginia. He was the son of William and Elizabeth (Cole) Cole, both also deceased by 1884.

         On October 12, 1837, William Cole was married in Berkeley County to Catherine Lewis, the daughter of William and Catherine (Miller) Lewis. Catherine was born in that county on October 15, 1810; by 1884, her father was deceased. Children born to William and Catherine Cole were: George T. Cole, October 1, 1838-?; William H. Cole, October 12, 1840-?; Samuel W. Cole, May 10, 1843-?; Martha J. Cole, April 11, 1845-before 1884; Johanna Cole, May 13, 1848; and James H. Cole, June 10, 1853-?, lived in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Three of the boys served in the Federal army during the war between the states.

         William Cole was elected overseer of the poor in 1865 and served five years; in 1855, he was elected road surveyor and served six years; he was in the manufacture of brooms. His widow lived in Falling Waters.
