Berkeley County, West Virginia Biography of George A. CHRISMAN

George A. CHRISMAN, son of George A. and Nancy (Porterfield) Chrisman, was born in Berkeley County, West Virginia, on August 10, 1831. George A.s father was born in Maryland and served in the 1812 war, first drafted for three months in the infantry and then serving six months as a substitute, cavalry service. After being discharged, he reenlisted and bargained with a party to go out again as a substitute in consideration of a horse, saddle and bridle and while he was attempting to obtain a pair of spurs, peace was declared and he had no horse, saddle or bridle, but had a pair of spurs of which he then had no use for. In about 1830, he moved to Berkeley County, where he met Nancy Porterfield, a native. George A.s father died October 17, 1881, at the age of 87, and his mother in March 1855, at 64.

George A. Chrisman had three wives, the first being Rebecca Criswell, born in Berkeley County and dying there October 1, 1855. He then married Mary E. Lingamfelder, who was also born in that county. She died there September 1878, after having seven children with George: Nannie E. Chrisman; Minnie R. Chrisman; Bessie H. Chrisman; George P. Chrisman; Clayton A. Chrisman; Wilson P. Chrisman; and Lucy M. Chrisman. As of 1884, all the children were living in Berkeley County, with the exception of George P., who was deceased.

His third wife was Sallie J. Owens, daughter of Henry and Eleanor C. Owens, both natives of Maryland, and both dying there. The marriage between George A. and Sallie took place in June 1881 in Baltimore, Maryland. Sallie Owens was born in West River, Anne Arundel County, of that state, on July 12, 1832.

George Chrisman and his family lived in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
