Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Samuel BUSEY

Samuel BUSEY was born in Ohio in 1824 during a visit of his parents, Benjamin T. and Mary (Walper) Busey, in that state. His father, of Scotch-Irish descent, married his mother in 1817 and they lived in Jefferson County where they had eight children. Benjamin died in 1837 and Mary in 1873.

Samuel BUSEY settled in Berkeley County in 1845. In Gerrardstown district in that county, on February 28, 1849, he married Evelina McKown, born in Berkeley County in 1826 to George and Evelina (Henshaw) McKown, natives of Berkeley County. The children born to Samuel and Evelina Busey were S.W. Busey, February 25, 1854-?; Newton W. Busey, April 17, 1856-?; M.A. Busey, October 17, 1857-?; and G. McKown Busey, April 4, 1860-?.

The great-grandfather of Evelina McKown Busey, Samuel McKown, settled in what is now Gerrardstown about 1720. His grave was still shown (in 1884) a few steps from the place where his cabin stood. When his son started to participate in the Revolutionary war, his words were, Sammy, dont desert, and he didnt, having been present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown where he was struck on the head with a sword by an officer because he was standing on a corn hill and wasnt in his place.

Samuel Busey was the first president of the Peoples Savings Bank at Martinsburg, organized in 1873; he continued to hold that position after the bank was merged into the National Bank, until 1875, when he was made the treasurer of the Farmers and Mechanics Mutual Fire Insurance Company of West Virginia. He held several offices of trust in Berkeley County and was a farmer at Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
