Berkeley County West Virginia Biography of Charles M. BISHOP


         Charles M. BISHOP was a native of Berkeley County, born in 1840 to Josephus and Margaret (Stuckey) Bishop. Josephus Bishop was born in Frederick County, Virginia, in 1808 and was married to Miss Stuckey on March 29, 1832; she was born in Berkeley County.

         Charles served in the Confederate army through the entire Civil war, going out with the militia at the opening of hostilities, and enlisting in the 7th Virginia Cavalry the following spring. He was taken prisoner August 2, 1862, and held at Washington city a month. He was recaptured January 9, 1864 and sent to Fort McHenry, Baltimore. His brother, Thomas J. Bishop, spent 18 months in the army and was wounded at the battle of Cedar Creek in October 1864.

         On March 12, 1867, in Shenandoah County, Virginia, Charles M. Bishop and Ann Rebecca Fravel were married. She was the daughter of Eli and Mary (Coffelt) Fravel and was born in that county in 1840. Charles and Ann had one child, Jennie F. Bishop, January 13, 1869-?. On November 18, 1873, Eli Fravel died in Shenandoah County; Mrs. Fravel was still alive in 1884.
