This page contains just a collection of late 18th and early 19th century references to Shankles.

From Sharon Hagler:

Per the Mable Thornton Papers (432-1) (page 6)  A.A. Hagler (a descendant of John Hagler and Dorthy Shanklin) stated that John Hagler "married Doughtery Shanklin" who had a brother Felty. Another source indicates she had a brother John. Many of my Hagler's wound up in TN, namely Stewart and Henry Co.'s. John and Dorothy moved to Madison Co., IL maybe abt. 1810 to 1815. It really is unknown, expect that John is mentioned in the history of Madison Co., IL along with brother, Jacob as being one of the earliest settlers. Dorothy dies in Madison Co. It is guessed that John may have moved back to Stewart Co., TN sometime between 182? to 1828/9.

The 1782 tax list of Montgomery Co., NC listed households of Jacob, Geo., John, and Valentine. (Felty is the equivalent of Valentine.) George Shankle was a Revolutionary Soldier (Cert. #12749) born 1754, Anson Co., NC, died 1841, Stanly Co., NC.

Finally, to link the Haglers and Shankles together in Anson Co., on the Peedee River, this abstract from Anson Co. Court Minutes 1771-1777: Oct. 13, 1771, pg. 67---and road from Mr. John Colsons ferry to Beffelow Head be divided into two districts and John Hagler be the overseer from the ferry to Jacobs Creek and George Shankle be overseer of upper part of said division.
