EDEYRNION VOLUNTEERS.1

IN a letter dated 27th November, 1803,2 Sir Watkin Williams Wynn applied to the Government for leave to raise the Edeyrnion Volunteers. This he apparently obtained, as in a letter dated 21st December, 1803, he submitted the following details for acceptance:-

 "Strength, 204.

"Terms of Service, "To any part of the "Kingdom in case of actual invasion or "appearance of the enemy off the coast."

In a further letter dated 24th December, 1803, Sir Watkin Williams Wynn wrote complaining that in vain had he addressed letters to the Board of Ordnance, "as he could not obtain or be informed what price they would allow to those who would provide themselves with arms."

The Corps had its headquarters at Corwen and was composed of three Companies.

The following were the officers:-

Officer Commanding-Major Edward Lloyd Edwards.

Captains-Hugh Davies3, William Davies, Thomas Davies.

Lieutenants-Walter Jones, Henry Maesmawr.

Ensign-Robert White.

Quarter Master-Robert Jones.

Surgeon-Robert Davies.

The records contain but very few details relating to this particular Corps and even these are practically confined to the route marches.

In 1804 the route march was "Corwen to Llanfyllin4 and return." Whilst stationed at the latter place, the Corps was charged £4:4:0 for the use of a field for drilling.

In 1805 the direction of the route march was changed, and Llanrwst5 was made the objective. At this place again the Corps indulged. in some drilling and the sum of £5: 5 : 0 was paid for the use of a ground for this purpose. In the "returns" relating to this route march there is an item of £1:10:0 paid to the chaplain "for officiating whilst on the march."

The Corps evidently appreciated Llanrwst as in the following year the route march, again was to this town.

In 1808 the route march was changed, this being "Wrexham6 and return."

The Corps was disbanded in December, 1808.
