Pontypool Branch

- Gwent Family History Society -

Welcome to the home of family history research in the Eastern Valley of the historical county of Monmouthshire, South Wales.

We are part of Gwent Family History Society, a long established registered charity, aiming to assist any persons with roots in Gwent, or now living in Gwent.

The Pontypool Branch is not just for people living or interested in Pontypool! Officially, we cover the area of the GRO Registration District of Pontypool. However, the valley geography and social allegiances of the area mean that the vast majority of our members are interested in the Eastern valley of Monmouthshire, from Blaenafon in the North to Cwmbran in the South.

The registration district of Pontypool covers the parishes and townships of Abersychan, Cwmafon, Cwmbran, Garndiffaith, Glascoed, Goytre, Griffithstown, Gwehelog, Llanbadoc, Llandewi fach, Llandegfedd, Llanfihangel Pontymoel, Llanfrechfa, Llangeview, Llangibby, Llanhilleth, Llanllowell, Llantrisant, Mamhilad, Monkswood, Panteg, Trevethin, Pontnewydd (Llanfrechfa Upper), Pontnewynydd, Pontypool, Trostry and Usk.

We are particularly proud to cover the area of Blaenafon, which in December 2000 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with other places including the Taj Mahal and the Pyramids (!) We look forward to continuing our long tradition of encouraging research into the town's families.

We have a reputation as a very friendly and informal club, where you will be more than welcome. Our age profile is very wide - from eleven to eighty!

Beginners to the hobby are especially welcome, and members have a vast field of knowledge to share.

Membership fees are currently 8.00 a year. Application forms are available from the main Gwent FHS website, or at Branch meetings. Alternatively, Gwent FHS is now represented at Genfair with provision for payment by credit card on-line.

CD ROMS of parish records, census and directories now available. See our publications page for details.
