Notes for PHYLLIS MARIE JONES: Phyllis started out working on a farm (milking, feeding livestock, and babysitting). She also worked as a housekeeper/ waitress after high school. She was a domestic engineer(housewife) for 18 years and then started as a cook at Ann's Country Kitchen in 1955 until 1958. Worked for Helen Anderson at Frostop for one year and then purchased the Frostop. It would have been a great business except the State decided to repave for two years and caused the business to go bust. Phyllis then became a cook at Methodist Hospital from 1963 thru 1966. She had a serious auto accident in Miami, Oklahoma on the Will Rogers Turnpike on December 26, 1966 on her way to visit her son Ron in Tucson. She started working at the Herald newspapers in Merriville in 1967 until her retirement in 1979 (see occupation).

Notes for NOLAN PIERPEOND TOVSEN: 1. Also worked as a mechanic, pipefitter/welder and cement finisher. Nolan started out as a farmer, logger, and a milk route hauler.

2. Eulogy Given By son Ron at Nolan's Funeral:

Nolan was born February 7, 1914 in Battleview, North Dakota. He was born in a soddie house and there was a coal mine on the property. Nolan's father, Peder, came from Norway at age 17. Peder must have had a very good technical eduaction because he had a number of patents dealing with wheat shockers.

Nolan apparently picked up much of this mechanical ability because there was nothing mechanical that he couldn't fix. One of his quotes was " If someone was smart enough to invent it, I'm smart enough to fix it".

Nolan was a toddler when he and his family moved to British Columbia and lived in a logging camp. They stayed in a cabin that was infested with rats. They had to put food in the middle of buckets so the rats couldn't get it.

Nolan then lived in Minneapolis at age 4 and moved to Kennan, Wisconsin at age 6. He went to schools in Kennan until he finished the 8th grade. He had to then work to help the family.

In 1931-32, Nolan caddied for 2 years in Minocqua, Wisconsin. In 1933 at age 19, he started a milk route in Kennan. Mr. Wiederholtz bought and gave Nolan a new Ford truck to start the route.

Nolan then worked as an auto mechanic, and worked for the WPA for 20 cents per hour in 1938. He moved his family to Gary, Indiana in 1940. For you Old Timers, the family lived at Denkers Cabins on Route 30 in Schererville.

Nolan worked as a laborer in construction until the fall of 1941. He then became a pipe fitter/welder in the steel mills until 1946. Nolan then went into the construction business first as a laborer and then as a brick and stone mason which he pursued for the rest of his working life. He was known as a Master Mason.

Nolan was knowledgeable in many trade and had few areas where he didn't have a grasp of how things worked. This is a brief background of Nolan's upbringing and adult life. Now we can talk about Nolan as a man, father, family man, husband, friend and relative.

Nolan was a mixture of extensive generosity, stern discipline, and strong principles. As an employer he was always fair to all of his employees. As an example, the owner of a commercial building where Nolan was contracting, told Nolan that he could not use one of the laborers on this job because he was black. Nolan told the owner that he would pull everyone off the job. If the black laborer couldn't work, no one else would work.

As a father, Nolan took his four children on trips to Niagara Falls, Canada, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, Alaska, and even Jellystone Park. He took them fishing, hunting, and just plain camping. There wasn't a single activity that his children participated in that he didn't support. As an example, Nolan always went to the boy's basketball practices. Because he was the only parent there, some of the other boys asked that Nolan be banned. The coach refused and invited the other players to have their parents attend the practices instead. End of story.

As a relative and friend, Nolan provided housing, food, jobs and fatherly support to many. At times there were as many as 14 people in an 18 X 28 ft. house. Several of the boys were in the need of a strong hand and received that from Nolan. One of them recently said he would have probably been in jail if it hadn't been for Nolan who he considers a father figure.

Nolan was known by all that knew and loved him as "Red" for his hair, and perhaps his temper.

We will all miss him.

I would like to thank God for the wonderful gift of grandparents. How lucky I was to be able to share my life with my Grandma and Grandpa Tovsen.

Grandpa was always there for me no matter how big I got. When I had children, they ad a chance to love him too.
