Portage County Wisconsin Postal History

Portage County was formed in Dec 1836, from territory formerly belonging to Brown, Crawford, and Milwaukee counties. It has been subjected to more frequent and radical changes of territorial limits than any other county in Wisconsin.

Columbia County was formed from it Feb 3, 1846 and Adams County was formed from it Mar 11, 1848.

Portage County again lost territory Mar 4, 1849, which was attached to Marquette County March 8, 1849; Some more parts were apportioned to Adams, Columbia, and Sauk Counties. Feb 27, 1850, Portage County gave three quarters of its entire area to form Marthon County.

Five townships were added to Portage County, Mar 29, 1856, then land was taken to form Wood County, thus forming the present boundary.

The county was originally names for the Fos-Wisconsin portage within its early boundaries.
