POTTS/TUBBS/MANNING/SPENCER/CARSON- [email protected] -December 26,1999

Am interested in expanding the current info I have on the above families.  As best as I can determine, Thomas Emerson TUBBS was the first to arrive in the county, driving through to Prescott in about 1864 with a team for Mr. Hosea BATES.  Thomas Emerson was from Essex, Chittenden County, VT and opened up a wagon and sleigh factory which he moved to River Falls in 1866.  These businesses were wiped out in a fire in 1876, but Thomas Emerson had also gotten into the insurance business which he continued until 1880 when the medicines he had compounded for himself and friends increased in popularity to the point he entered into the manufacture of proprietary medicines as a business in River Falls in 1881.  This business prospered for over 50 years with distribution in WI, MN, IA, ND, SD and MT of products such as TUBBS Bilious Man's Friend, White Pine Compound, Little Laxative Pills and lodomyrrh.

Thomas Emerson married Rebecca MANNING of Canada and had three children:  Irving E., who died in infancy and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery with his grandfather (Ira); Willard (or William) Elmer, and Cora.  Thomas Emerson died in 1894, two years after he turned the business over to his son, Willard Elmer.  Incorporated in 1902, the business moved from the family home at the SE corner of 3rd and Walnut to the second floor of a building at Main and Elm Streets.

William Elmer, who was born in 1869, married Lucy Amelia POTTS at the home of her parents in River Falls.  Lucy Amelia was the daughter of James M. POTTS and Emma SPENCER and was born in Maiden Rock in 1872.  Her aunt was Mrs. Amelia CARSON of Maiden Rock.  Willard Elmer, who took over his father's business, died in River Falls in 1931.  Lucy Amelia died in San Francisco in 1954.

Willard Elmer and Lucy Amelia had 8 children:  Emerson, Edith, Mina, Adah, Vidie, Willard Elmer, Jr., Lois and Emma Lou.

I have a variety of into on all of above, plus pretty solid connections of TUBB's line back to 1500s in England.  Am willing to share to expand current database.
