Descendancy of Early Town of Sturgeon Bay, Door County Homesteader: Svend Anton SAMUELSON

The following SAMUELSON Family History is a Descendancy from early Town of Sturgeon Bay, Door County Homesteader: Svend Anton SAMUELSON (including his parents) gleaned from contributions by Chris ELONICH, whose mother was a SAMUELSON, including family lore and records, family histories from Ancestry.com and original records gleaned by Sue HOHNEKE of the PGS.  This descendancy is not all inclusive but is a good beginning of the SAMUELSON Family whose original homestead was on Shiloh Road and eventually included the Town of Sturgeon Bay-Sturgeon Bay Town/Samuelson/South Side Cemetery , no longer in service as a burial ground but begun 1869 on the corner of the SAMUELSON property.

Svend Anton SAMUELSON, born in Norway, immigrated in 1854 and settled originally in Eaton, the Town of Liberty, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin.  He served in the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (the Scandinavian Regiment) as Second Lieutenant after which he returned to back to Norway to marry his wife Hannah CHRISTENSEN (CHRISTIANSON).  The couple settled first in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, and Homesteaded in the Town of Sturgeon Bay on Shiloh Road in 1869 (family knowledge)/1873.  Research suggests that Svend worked on the Homestead in Sturgeon Bay but the family did not live full-time in Sturgeon Bay till some time after 1873.  Perhaps they traveled back and forth for years till eventually living full-time in the Town of Sturgeon Bay.  Their farm, which eventually was transformed into an orchard in the 1930's/1940's and had German POW's picking for them in 1940's.

Our thanks to Chris ELONICH for contributing the SAMUELSON family information and pictures.

Regarding Albert Samuel SAMUELSON: "Albert. I wonder if the 1892 Michigan reference is correct? Albert left Sturgeon Bay, and may have traveled to Michigan to participate in the logging industry. I do know he had something to do with logging, but I do not think that lasted very long. In 1892-93 he was in Chicago and participated in the World's Columbian Exposition. He was an Assistant Light keeper at the Fair's lighthouse. When he was not actively running the light, he would help with tours around the fair. He later moved to to another light/lifesaving station at the mouth of the Chicago River. Sometime from 1892 to 1907, he operated the "Madison Oyster House And Restaurant,' on Madison Street in Chicago (phone Seeley 3833). This business at some point, became "Samuelson's Restaurant." The restaurant operated between the years of 1893-1907. Concurrently, for two years, he managed a resort hotel in Fox Lake, Illinois. This was the "Eastside Hotel" in the neighborhood of "Ingleside." He later retired to Sturgeon Bay, where he and wife Dora lived on Maple Ave. When his Father Svend, had died, Albert either inherited the Shiloh Road property, or bought out the other heir's. He owned the farm (with Dora?) until he died, at which time Dora took it over."-e-mail from Chris ELONICH (25 Oct 2010)

Regarding SAMUELSON Farm: "During the Great Depression Stanley and family lived out on the farm.  Albert and Dora had a home on Maple Ave.  Albert owned the place, and Stanley was the farm manager. The farm had no utilities except for a telephone.  In my Grandmother's book (Grace (KEITH) SAMUELSON), she describes the Great Blizzard of '36. The entire family lived together in the farmhouse kitchen.  The kitchen was the original log cabin that Svend had built when the land was homesteaded.  The rest of the house was closed off.  There in the kitchen they kept warm by keeping the big wood stove blazing.  The water came from a well outside the door.  The outhouse was off to one side.  The inside was illuminated by kerosene lamps.  When my Mom and her family spoke of this era, they made it sound like a grand adventure.  It was not until I became a young man that I began to understand that they had gone through a period of near poverty.  There are two great lessons I learned: One. we must always see the cup as half full in order to stay happy.  The other: I asked my Aunt Ruth what was her favorite memory of my Mom?  Her response was that they always had a little competition in seeing who could best make "something new from something old."  Those two were always cutting, and recutting old clothes and making them presentable again!"-Chris ELONICH (19 Oct 2010).

Regarding Stanley Gordon SAMUELSON: "Stanley: Stanley grew up in Sturgeon Bay (Sawyer) and attended grade school on Neenah Ave He did know his future bride (Grace Dorothy Keith) from Sturgeon Bay High School, but they did not become close until they coincidentally road the same train (exactly which train is not clear. According to Grace, she was on her way to a teaching job (possibly her time in Bethlehem, PA,) and Stanley was on the train in regard to his USMC enlistment. Stanley had joined the Marine Corps in the early 1920's. During his term of enlistment he worked his way up to Gunnery Sergeant. This is a notable achievement, as the Corps was, at that time, loaded with World War One veterans. Stanley saw service at the Washington Barracks, Washing ton D.C. where he occasionally participated in Honor Guards for different State functions. He was very tall, and looked every inch a Marine! During his time in DC he was photographed for a brass polish advertisement. His belt buckle was so shiny that the photographer was clearly visible in its reflection. Stanley also was given sea duty, and was part of a force that went to both Haiti and Nicaragua. During his time in the Corps, Stanley studied hard for a number of Corps sponsored classes. I cannot state with any authority, but I believe these courses laid the foundation for his later agriculture inspector jobs, as well as his knowledge of the workings of a restaurant. After his Honorable Discharge, Stanley drove a truck for a short while. He drove between Chicago and Green Bay. Stanley married his sweetheart, Grace Dorothy Keith, and they had four children. Albert was first. he died at three or fours years of age. He died at the University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. He was buried at Bayside Cemetery, Sturgeon Bay, WI."... "Stanley, with a family to feed, did some moving around to find work. For several months they all lived in Wausau. Later they moved to Greendale, Wi. A little after that, they moved to Marshalltown, Iowa. In Marshalltown he worked for "ARBIE Feed and Grain. A business owned and operated by a cousin; Russ Bagnall. After Marshalltown they returned to Sturgeon Bay. Stanley decided to build a restaurant, and Grace was reluctantly pulled into the project. Using funds loaned by one of his "maiden" Aunts, he began construction of Samuelson's restaurant. A condition of this Aunt's loan was such that the restaurant may not serve alcohol. This Aunt had been a member of the WCTU ( Woman's Christian Temperance Union ) and she felt very strongly about the evils of the demon rum. The restaurant opened in 1949. Originally it was meant to be operated as a "year round " business, but the economics of the Sturgeon Bay tourist season determined that it could only be profitable, "in season." The restaurant became a fairly well known fixture of the Door Peninsula area. For awhile Stanley and Grace had a cooking show on Green Bay TV. Grace wrote several cookbooks, which also helped to promote the restaurant. The Mobile Travel Guide featured Samuelson's Restaurant as one of the best in Wisconsin, and the nation. Samuelson's was rated at "Five stars and a check; an exceptionally good value." During the off-season, Stanley would often take work as a Agriculture Inspector in either Wisconsin, or Florida. Stanley had several health issues. He was a diabetic, and later learned he had Parkinson's Disease. Through the 1960's, and up until his death, his overall health was in decline. In 1972, mostly due to Stanley's ill health, they sold the restaurant and retired to an apartment at 330 Joliet Avenue, in Sturgeon Bay. For the last eight years of his life, Stanley enjoyed having visitors over, reading history, and the visits of his family. Grace was constantly at his side up to his death in May of 1980. He died either at the Dorcester Nursing Home, or Door County Memorial Hospital. He was buried at Shiloh Church, Shiloh Rd, a church that his Grandfather Svend had help charter." -e-mail family memories contributed by Chris ELONICH (25 Oct 2010)

Regarding Grace (KEITH) SAMUELSON: "My Grandmother's biography, is best related by reading her book, "Reflections On Door County." In that book she uses prose and poetry to describe her life. She had moved away from Sturgeon Bay in aprox 1987. This move was necessitated by her own declining health, and physical limitations of her advancing age. She moved to an retirement apartment in Edgerton, Wisconsin. Edgerton was Ruth's town of residence. This new proximity of residence better facilitated Grace's overall care, and also enabled many more visits from family. After about five years in the apartment, further decline in health required her transfer to the extended care wing at Edgerton Hospital. It was there that she died, with family at her side. She is buried at Shiloh, alongside of Stanley. An interesting side note of her burial was that she had specifically requested that there would be no graveside ceremony. A number of family disregarded this request ( myself included) and we went to witness the internment. The man who delivered the burial vault turned out to be a longtime family friend. Then, when the casket was lowered, the grave needed to be filled. As this was February, the original dirt from the hole was not suitable for that use. That dirt was frozen and would not fill the grave properly. A dump truck of clean, sandy soil was brought into the cemetery. After the family sprinkled some dirt into the hole, the dump truck was backed up and tipped its load. I asked the driver where this particular dirt had been procured. He told me that it had come from the quarry on Shiloh Road. That quarry, had been the site of the old Samuelson Farm. It struck me as it was quite an irony. Grandma would have said, "A serendipity." The regiment was mustered in at Camp Randall on Feb. 14, 1862 and a month later was transferred to St. Louis. It served faithfully for three years, being engaged at Stone River, in the various battles before Atlanta and remaining in Tennessee until December 1864, when the men were mustered out. A few soldiers from the county went into the Sixteenth regiment and fully half a company in the Nineteenth was also made up of Manitowoc men, W. W. Bates, the shipbuilder, being captain of Co. K, serving ably throughout the Atlanta campaign."Svend mustered out due to illness 1863.

16. 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment-Scandinavian Regiment-online at www.norway.org/ARCHIVE/1999/199904battlefields/.

"Norwegian soldiers on Civil War battlefields At the upcoming reenactment of the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia, a Norwegian Civil War story will be told. In September, the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry will be recreated at Chickamauga to tell an almost forgotten tale of brave immigrants turned soldiers. News of Norway, issue 4, 1999Led by Colonel Hans Christian Heg, the 15th Wisconsin was known as the Scandinavian regiment. Though thousands of Norwegians served on both sides of the war, the 15th in the Federal Army was the only Scandinavian regiment on either side. The soldiers of the 15th were predominantly Norwegian, including Col. Heg, but there were officers and enlisted men from Denmark and Sweden as well. The soldiers of the 15th were immigrants who had settled in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The idea to include the Scandinavian regiment in the reenactment that takes place Sep. 17-19 came from Scott Meeker, a computer software salesman from Wisconsin. Meeker, who has been a Civil War reenactor for years, was working with a reenactment group in Wisconsin, piecing together parts of the 15th Wisconsin's story and reenacting it for the public in Norwegian- American communities in Wisconsin. Late in the summer of 1997, Meeker heard about the plans to reenact the Battle of Chickamauga, where the 15th suffered large losses. "I thought that it would be very special if we could arrange for the 15th to be portrayed as a part of the overall reenactment and got involved with trying to make that happen," Meeker said. In order to pitch the idea to the Chickamauga organizing committee, Meeker needed to know more about the story he was pitching. A reenactment is not the mere physical portrayal of a historical moment.According to Meeker, the participants need to know who their characters were, what the dynamics of the regiment were like and so on. The reenactors not only paint the picture but they relive and experience a situation that took place over a hundred years ago. For an untrained eye, a reenactment might look like utter chaos, but every battle is carefully planned, in detail, years in advance. When taking a closer look at the 15th, Meeker discovered that a lot of the 15th's history was inaccessible to him due to a language barrier, as the literature about the regiment was mostly in Norwegian. Meeker then began doing his own research. The results of his research so far can be seen at the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry web site at www.15thwisconsin.net <http://www.15thwisconsin.net/>. Meeker said that he felt this was the best way to make the material accessible to the public. The web site offers the full history of the 15th and profiles many of the soldiers and their stories. Currently, Meeker is working on finding the personal stories and destinies of the 906 officers and enlisted men of the 15th Wisconsin. One can also find the latest news on the upcoming reenactment at Chickamauga. There is also a help page on the web as Meeker is dependent upon information from relatives or family friends in order to piece together the story of the 15th. Currently, he is in search of the name of an unknown soldier, whose picture is displayed on the page. The 15th Wisconsin reenactment at Chickamauga will be closed to the general public. However, a special viewing arrangement has been granted to descendants of the 15th's soldiers, a group visiting from Scandinavia and others who have a special interest in the 15th Wisconsin, according to Meeker. The special guests will get to watch the battle at the Viniard's Farm, which takes place early Saturday morning on Sep. 18.The Battle of Chickamauga, which took place Sep. 12-20, 1863, was the second bloodiest battle of the Civil War. In 4 hours of battle, the 15th Wisconsin suffered around 50 percent casualties. When the 15th went into the fight on the right wing of the Federal Army under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Johnson, there were 176 officers and enlisted men. The morning after the battle, only 75 officers and enlisted men answered roll call. A number of the 15th's men ended up in the notorious Andersonville Prison Camp. If it hadn't been for two companies left behind at Island No. 10, which the 15th helped capture, the 15th Wisconsin would have ceased to exist. For their bravery at Chickamauga, several of the 15th's soldiers were awarded the rank of Brevet Captain.Col. Heg, who had been crucial in recruiting the men of the Scandinavian regiment that was mustered into service on Feb. 14, 1862, at Camp Randall in Madison, Wis., was among the casualties. The popular Norwegian born officer who had emigrated to the U.S. in 1840 died in a field hospital the day after the battle. He would never know that Major General William S. Rosencrans, commander of the Army of the Cumberland, had intended to promote Heg to Brigadier General. Heg was still the highest ranked Wisconsin soldier killed in the Civil War, though. Rosencrans, who was relieved of his duty as commander of the Army of the Cumberland after the defeat at Chickamauga, said of Heg: "His bravery, demonstrated in many engagements, is unquestioned. It is not however, the reckless daring of an unskilled and careless man, but the cool and determined valor of a competent, thoughtful commander. He is prudent, but not timid; deliberate, but not slow in movement. In person he is of medium size, rather slender, and with features more than ordinarily prepossessing. With the courage he has power of endurance so natural to the Scandinavian, and well calculated to share the hardships and privations of a march as he directs the movements of his command."Heg, who was the first Norwegian elected to a Wisconsin state-wide office, was buried at the Norway Lutheran Church Cemetery near Wind Lake, Wisc. But the 15th Wisconsin cannot only be found in Georgia this fall. The history of the Scandinavian regiment will also appear at an outdoor history museum during Southeastern Wisconsin Labor Day weekend. The event will include a reunion of descendants of the 15th's soldiers, a warm up event for the reenactors and portrayal of what life was like for the 15th Wisconsin soldiers of the Federal Army. Two weeks later, the reenactors of the 15th Wisconsin will be among some 10,000 people expected to take part at Chickamauga.Information Scott Meeker can be contacted via e-mail at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> or mail to 3301 High Road, Middleton, WI 53562.To learn more about the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, please visit www.15thwisconsin.net <http://www.15thwisconsin.net/>.".
